75 senators endorse Ijebu-Remo state creation proposal

Senator Gbenga Daniel secures backing from 75 senators, surpassing the constitutional threshold required to advance the proposal.

The campaign for Ijebu-Remo State creation, spearheaded by Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has reached a significant milestone after the proposal secured the support of 75 senators, exceeding the constitutional requirement needed to move the initiative to the next stage.

The latest endorsements came from Senator Joseph Ikpea of Edo North, Senator Francis Faduyile of Ondo South and Senator Danladi Halilu of Nasarawa North, raising the number of supporting senators to 75.

The Constitution requires the backing of at least two-thirds of the Senate, equivalent to 73 senators, before a state creation proposal can proceed through the constitutional amendment process.

The development marks the strongest legislative backing yet for the long-standing campaign to create a new state from the historic Ijebu and Remo divisions of Ogun State.

Senator Daniel, who sponsored the proposal, has consistently argued that the demand is driven by historical justice, equitable representation, administrative efficiency and the need to bring governance closer to the people.

“The demand is rooted in historical justice, equity, administrative efficiency, economic viability and the need to bring governance closer to the people,” Senator Daniel has maintained during engagements on the proposal.

Beyond introducing the bill, the former Ogun State governor has undertaken extensive consultations with lawmakers across party lines in an effort to build national consensus around the initiative.

Those engagements have helped position the proposal among the most advanced state creation requests currently before the National Assembly.

Although the Senate backing represents a major breakthrough, the proposal must still complete several constitutional stages before becoming law.

The bill will require consideration and approval by the House of Representatives, endorsement by at least two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly across the federation and, ultimately, presidential assent.

State creation has remained one of the most complex constitutional processes in Nigeria since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

Several proposals have been introduced over the years, but only a handful have progressed beyond the early legislative stages because of the rigorous constitutional requirements.

For many residents of Ijebuland and Remoland, the Senate milestone has renewed optimism that a decades-long aspiration could be edging closer to reality.

Supporters believe a separate state would improve governance, accelerate infrastructure development and strengthen economic opportunities across the region.

The latest development also underscores Senator Daniel’s continued role in constitutional reform debates and reflects growing bipartisan support for the Ijebu-Remo State creation proposal as it moves towards its next legislative hurdles.

PRESS STATEMENT

The OGD Media Office has been inundated with enquiries regarding a purportedly leaked private conversation allegedly involving His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and a respected elder statesman.

For the records, this Office became aware of the existence of the audio over six weeks ago, following attempts by its purveyors to deploy the maliciously doctored recording as an instrument of political blackmail, coercion, intimidation, and other criminal ends.

The audio in circulation is a manipulated and deliberately doctored material, calculated to mislead the public, malign the reputation of His Excellency, and advance a premeditated political agenda.

Accordingly, the appropriate law enforcement agencies have been formally invited to investigate the source of the recording, those responsible for its manipulation and dissemination, and the criminal motives behind its circulation.

In addition, our legal team has been instructed to pursue all available civil and criminal remedies against every individual or group connected with this orchestrated campaign of calumny, defamation, malicious falsehood, and cybercrime.

This shenanigans must stop in our body politics.

Statesmanship and Political Restraint: The OGD Example

I read about the boycott directive reportedly issued by the Campaign Organisation of OGD to its teaming supporters regarding the recently concluded primaries in the Ogun East Senatorial District. Reasons advanced for the action included the uneven political playing ground which allegedly rendered the process unfair to all concerned.

As widely reported in the media, the exercise appeared to have fallen short of democratic ethos and principles. Interestingly, this observation is not limited to that Senatorial District alone; similar concerns seem to have surfaced in other areas within and outside Ogun State.

What, however, interests me most is the statesmanlike disposition displayed by OGD in helping to avert what could have degenerated into a major political crisis in the area, arising from the inability of two leading contenders to reach a common understanding in the interest of the very people they both seek to serve.

In my earlier public interventions, I had warned that a political bloodbath was possible if both parties failed to resolve their differences in favour of the people. Thankfully, OGD chose the path of honour, dignity, and restraint — qualities for which he has long been known both as a former Governor and as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Another important issue raised by this development is the continuing challenge that politics and “politicking” in Nigeria pose to those of us who teach Political Sociology at higher institutions. This situation represents only one example among many.

One would have expected that Ogun State — where, under OGD’s leadership, political aspirants and contestants were once freely allowed to debate before the electorate at the Cultural Centre in Abeokuta — would have advanced far beyond what was recently witnessed during the Ogun East Senatorial District primaries. Sadly, it appears we may have been dragged backward in our political journey of democratic transformation in Ogun State.

Similarly, one would have expected that the spirit of consensus which produced YAYI would have been allowed to settle and positively influence political processes across other parts of the state. Unfortunately, events that followed, especially in the Ogun East Senatorial District, have left many disappointed. The situation now reflects the image of a divided house, with possible implications and consequences as all parties move toward the general elections.

The government under the incumbent administration was expected to play the role of a father figure under whose authority the entire process was conducted. Acting simultaneously as a contestant and an umpire falls below what is expected in a true democracy where the credibility of the process is just as important as the outcome itself. Unfortunately, there appeared to be no clear separation between these positions. To be fair, this concern is not peculiar to Ogun State alone; it is a national issue deserving serious attention going forward.

At this critical time, one can only further appeal to those in positions of authority to always remember that power ultimately belongs to the people, and that the people must remain central in all considerations relating to governance and service. Any service carried out without the people in mind ultimately becomes a disservice against the people.

1. Since we joined our great Party, the All Progressive Congress some years ago, we believe we have added value in no unmistakable terms to the party.

2. We have followed our principal to all the nooks and crannies of the Ogun East Senatorial District empowering the people and we are glad that the goodwill of His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces has been supportive in no small measure.

3. However what we have experienced in recent times is at variance to our understanding of the principles of a democratic system where fair play is the minimum expectations.

4. In the last few days we have seen all manners of strange movements and miscreants taken positions and ready to strike down our people. We have heard and seen Agents of the State government threatening fire and brimstone against our supporters, and the elections yesterday is a confirmation of our worst fears. We do not believe in good conscience that we should subject our people to unnecessary danger and mayhem.

5. On this note, we have advised our Principal, His Exc, The Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel to distance himself from the Senatorial party Primary elections.

6. We also hereby advise our supporters to stay away from the venues of the Senatorial party Primary election of Monday 18th May, 2026 for their own safety.

OGUN EAST 2027: NOW THAT DAPO ABIODUN HAS FILLED HIS NOMINATION FORM — MATTERS ARISING.

With the recent development confirming that Governor Dapo Abiodun has finally picked and filled his nomination form for the Ogun East Senatorial race, political observers have now shifted attention from speculation to reality.

The big question on the lips of many across Ogun East is no longer whether Dapo Abiodun will contest, but whether his candidature truly stands a chance against the political weight, structure, and goodwill of Distinguished Senator Gbenga Daniel.

Matters arising from this development clearly place the former governor ahead for several reasons.

First, Senator Gbenga Daniel remains one of the most experienced and result-oriented political figures to emerge from Ogun State.

His records as Governor are visible across the state and his performance at the Senate has further strengthened his acceptability among the people. From infrastructural legacy to legislative contributions, OGD continues to enjoy the support of the grassroots.

Secondly, while Dapo Abiodun is still battling widespread criticism over governance issues, internal party crisis, and allegations of imposition politics within the APC structure, OGD appears more politically stable and strategically connected with the people.

The resistance and protests witnessed in different parts of Ogun State against perceived imposition have shown that many party faithful are uncomfortable with the current political direction.

Another factor working in favour of OGD is political goodwill. Across Ogun East, many see him as a tested leader with experience, maturity, and capacity to represent the district effectively at the national level.

His relationship with party members, traditional institutions, youths, and stakeholders remains stronger than that of his rival.

Furthermore, many political analysts believe that Dapo Abiodun’s ambition may divide the APC family in Ogun East rather than unite it.

Questions surrounding trust, leadership style, and internal democracy continue to trail his political movement. In contrast, OGD is increasingly being viewed as the safer and more marketable political option.

Now that the nomination form has been filled, the contest has truly begun.

However, beyond power and influence, elections are decided by acceptance, performance, and connection with the people.

As things stand today, the political pendulum appears to tilt more in favour of Senator Gbenga Daniel than Governor Dapo Abiodun.

2027 promises to be a defining moment in Ogun East politics.
