CHURCH, GOVERNMENT MUST COLLABORATE TO TACKLE SOCIETAL CHALLENGES — GIFT WORLU

•••As Bishop Ihunwo leads Niger Delta North Diocese delegation to Obio/Akpor Council Secretariat ahead of Synod 2026

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has called for stronger collaboration between the church and government in addressing Nigeria’s growing social and economic challenges.

Worlu made the call when he received the Bishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta North, Rt Rev. Wisdom Budu Ihunwo, alongside his wife, Dr. Mrs. Mercy Oluchi Wisdom, other clergymen, and members of the Diocese at the Council Secretariat.

The visit was part of activities leading to the 2026 Synod scheduled to hold at St. Peter's Anglican Church Rumuepirikom Deanery.

Speaking during the courtesy visit, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu expressed appreciation to the Bishop and his delegation, describing their presence as a privilege. He emphasized that both the church and government must work hand-in-hand to confront pressing societal issues.

Highlighting his administration’s priorities, Gift Worlu underscored the importance of basic education over excessive emphasis on certificates.
“Government owes the people quality basic education—primary and secondary. We must begin to emphasize technical skills, values, and productivity rather than just academic titles,” he stated, warning against what he described as a “false sense of brilliance” in the current education system.

He further advocated long-term financial planning at all levels of government, proposing the creation of a local government sovereign wealth fund through consistent savings to secure future development.

Reaffirming his support for the church, Gift Worlu pledged to attend the upcoming synod and contribute to its success.

In his remarks, Bishop Wisdom Ihunwo congratulated Gift Worlu on his emergence as Chairman and prayed for divine wisdom in leadership, describing governance as a complex responsibilty

The Bishop formally informed the Chairman of the Diocese’s 13th Synod scheduled to hold from May 13 to 17, 2026, at the Rumuepirikom Deanery, with the theme centered on advancing God’s kingdom.

He extended an invitation to Obio/Akpor Chairman, Gift Worlu to participate actively in the synod, emphasizing the importance of spiritual support for leadership.

The visit concluded with prayers for the Chairman, his administration and the continued peace and development of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

JNTSCN Seeks Partnership with Obio/Akpor LGA on Transport Safety Training

The Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria (JNTSCN), led by its Chairman, Amb. Goodlive Chukwuemeka Elee, has paid a strategic working visit to the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, seeking partnership, approval, and support for the implementation of its national transport safety mandate.

The delegation was received on behalf of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche.

Speaking during the visit, Amb. Elee conveyed the goodwill of the National Council of JNTSCN and its strategic partners, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Nigeria Police, and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. He commended the Obio/Akpor administration for its remarkable strides in infrastructure development, improved road safety, enhanced drainage systems, and proactive security collaborations that have positioned the LGA as one of the safest for residents and investors.

He noted that Obio/Akpor has been selected as a pilot local government for the national transport safety training programme scheduled for the third quarter of 2026. The initiative, officially inaugurated on March 31, 2026, is aimed at providing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training for heavy-duty truck drivers, commercial bus operators, tanker drivers, and transport union executives.

According to him, the programme is designed to reduce transport-related accidents in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He emphasized that the committee’s mission is rooted in partnership rather than confrontation, stressing the need for grassroots collaboration to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

Amb. Elee further disclosed that following the training phase, a nationwide enforcement exercise will commence on August 1, 2026, targeting drivers and transport operators who fail to comply with the federal safety programme.

He appealed to the Obio/Akpor LGA for key areas of support, including official endorsement of JNTSCN activities, joint sensitization efforts with relevant departments, provision of logistics such as a utility vehicle, and the nomination of liaison officers to facilitate smooth coordination during the programme.

Responding, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche, welcomed the initiative and expressed the LGA’s commitment to promoting safety and orderliness on the roads. She highlighted the importance of proper driver training, noting that many road users lack adequate knowledge of safety practices due to deficiencies in existing driving school systems.

Drawing from her background in safety training during her industrial attachment with Shell, Dr. Nyeche emphasized that the proposed HSE training would significantly improve driving standards, reduce accidents, and enhance public safety.

She assured the delegation that the Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu will be duly briefed on their requests, expressing confidence in his willingness to support initiatives that promote structured development and public safety.
