Demolition of illegal structures and shanties is currently ongoing at Dustbin Road, along the access route linking to Eneka Link Road.

The enforcement exercise by the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council is aimed at clearing illegal structures obstructing road access, reclaiming public spaces, improving traffic flow, enhancing environmental sanitation, and restoring order within the area.

The Council remains committed to ensuring a cleaner, safer and more accessible Obio/Akpor.

The people-centric Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has announced a N170M Back to School Support Initiative to help 850 families across the 17 wards of the LGA.

Under the scheme, each of the 850 selected families is expected to receive ₦200,000. The initiative is designed to cushion the financial burden associated with the payment of school fees and other educational expenses for parents and guardians, particularly as families prepare for the new academic session.

Beyond the financial assistance, the Initiative speaks to a broader understanding that investments in education are critical for shaping the future of the people, and the development of the Local Government Area.

OBIO/AKPOR 10TH LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL CONCLUDES 20TH PLENARY SESSION

The Obio/Akpor 10th Legislative Council on Tuesday, 8th September, 2026 held its 20th Plenary Session at the Council Chambers, Rumuodomaya.

The session was presided over by the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Rex-Millia Abuchi Amadi. In his remarks, the Leader commended Honourable Members for their diligence, particularly during the recent Public Hearing organized by the Legislative Arm.

Hon. Michael Uche Azuonwu, Councilor representing Ward 1, raised concerns regarding the Ward 1 Constituency Project and called for prompt executive action to ensure its timely ex*****on.

The Deputy Leader of the House, Hon. Nyekwere Chinda, Councilor Ward 12, briefed the House on ongoing engagements with the Executive Arm regarding Councilor welfare. He assured Members that their needs would be addressed in due course.

The Thanksgiving Planning Committee briefed the House on arrangements for the forthcoming Legislative Thanksgiving Service. The proposed date was presented to the House for consideration.

Hon. Surv. Kingsley Chioma, Councilor Ward 6, commended the 10th Legislative Council for the successful hosting of the Public Hearing. He, however, called for improved inter-agency coordination in subsequent hearings.

The House received a report from Chief Tony A. Chuku, a respected stakeholder, on the Public Hearing on the proposed Byelaws on Tenement Rate Administration and the Anti-Land Grabbing, Lawful Occupation and Development Regulation Bill, 2026.

Hon. Chief Edison Amadi, Councilor Ward 3 and Chairman, House Committee on Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, presented the Committee’s report on the “Obio/Akpor Security Company Limited Establishment Bill, 2026.”

The House Committee on Information also submitted its report on the “Whistleblowers Protection and Detection of Concealed Commercial Operations Bill, 2026.”

After due consideration of the findings and recommendations contained in the Committee reports, the Leader put the question and the House unanimously adopted the reports.

A motion for adjournment was moved by Hon. Gladys Akani, Councilor Ward 15, and seconded by Hon. Stanley Ogbugo Owhonda, Councilor Ward 2. The House subsequently adjourned.

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, is a man whose actions are guided by the principle of long-term and sustainable development. Since assuming office, he has focused on building strategic and futuristic structures that will outlive his administration. A rare trait among public office holders who may prioritize public validation at the expense of the broader essence of developmental governance.

His regular engagements with corporate entities and establishments within the LGA speak volumes about his genuine intention to connect the people of Obio/Akpor to the opportunities that abound within their environment.

Prior to his emergence as Chairman, many businesses suffered setbacks as a result of loopholes in the council’s revenue system, a trend that contributed to the perception of Obio/Akpor LGA as an unfriendly environment for business. This informed his decision to phase out the manual method of tax and revenue collection through the introduction of an online revenue platform, thereby putting an end to the harassment and uncoordinated practices associated with the manual collection system.

Commuters and business owners now attest to the improved ease with which goods and services move within the city centre, following the administration’s decisive action against illegal street trading upon assumption of office.

DR. GIFT WORLU INSPECTS REVITALIZATION WORKS AT OGBOGORO PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, earlier today visited the Primary Health Care Centre in Ogbogoro to inspect the ongoing revitalisation works and assess the level of progress recorded on the facility.

The Ogbogoro Primary Health Care Centre is the fourth healthcare facility to benefit from the revitalisation initiative being implemented through a counterpart funding arrangement between the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB).

The initiative is aimed at improving the quality of healthcare infrastructure within the LGA and ensuring that residents have access to functional and conducive primary healthcare facilities within their communities.

During the inspection, the Chairman, who was accompanied by the Executive Director of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Prof. Chituru Adiele, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work carried out so far. He commended the contractors for their commitment to delivering the project to the required standard.

Dr. Worlu further assured residents of Ogbogoro and its environs of timely completion, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery and improving the overall well-being of residents of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

One of the landmark initiatives undertaken by the Dr. Gift Worlu-led administration was the comprehensive renovation of Community State School, Choba, which had suffered significant deterioration due to years of inadequate maintenance. The intervention revitalised the school’s infrastructure, transforming it into a modern, conducive and aesthetically appealing learning environment.

Beyond improving the physical condition of the facility, the project has renewed the prospects for quality education and created a more supportive environment for pupils, teachers and the wider Choba community.

Since assuming office, the administration has maintained a strong commitment to educational development through strategic engagements with professional bodies, educational institutions, corporate organisations and other stakeholders. These collaborations are aimed at promoting academic advancement, capacity building, skills development and improved career opportunities for young people.

As a scholar and passionate advocate for quality education, Dr. Gift Worlu has consistently emphasised the importance of creating opportunities that enable young people to pursue their educational aspirations and develop the skills required to contribute meaningfully to society.

A major milestone in this commitment is the administration’s ₦50 million undergraduate bursary scheme, which provided ₦100,000 each to 500 undergraduate students from Obio/Akpor Local Government Area studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria during the first phase of the programme.
