💘 Chapter 29 💘 30 💘

The implication made her stomach twist.

Her father's gaze hardened. "You will attend luncheons, meet potential suitors, and behave with absolute dignity. Any rumors__any__will be unacceptable".

"Yes, father," she murmured, though her chest felt like it was caving in.

Marcus leaned forward, setting down his cup. "Speaking of rumors, senator.... I've been curious. That mysterious man from the gala___he is still on my mind. Who was he?"

Her father frowned. "What are you implying?"

"Nothing, of course,"Marcus shrugged, his eyes gleaming. "Only that strangers at such events can be.... dangerous. Perhaps it would be wise to investigate."

Her throat went dry. Her father gave her a sharp look, as though searching for cracks in her expression. Then he turned back to Marcus. "Do it. Quietly."

Marcus grin widened. "With pleasure."

Ariella's heart pounded, but she dared not speak one word, and suspicion would swallow her whole.

••••

That night, Ariella escaped to the balcony garden desperate for air. The city lights glittered beyond the walls, a reminder that somewhere out there, Dominic was moving like a shadow.

As if summoned by thought, a low voice came from behind her. "You look like a caged bird."

She spun, relief and fear colliding. "Dominic," he stepped from the hidden, dressed in dark clothes, dangerous and mesmerizing.

Her voice trembled. "Marcus suspects. He's digging for proof. And my father....he wants me engaged."

Dominic's jaw tightened. "To Marcus?"

She shook her head, tears threatening. "No. He won't stop until he has me under his thumb."

He moved closer, his hand brushing hers, grounding her. "Then I'll stop him first."

"Dominic, you don't understand. He's already feeding my father poison. If he finds out about us___"

"He won't." His eyes burned with conviction. "Because i will make sure he never gets the chance."

She searched his face. "What are you planning?"

"Tonight," Dominic said, voice low and lethal. "Marcus will think he's cornering me. Instead I'll set a trap."

Her heart stuttered. "Trap?"

A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "I've left bread crumbs. A false name, a staged meeting. He'll chase the lead straight into my hands."

Ariella's fear warred with awe. "Dominic, if he catches you___"

"Then I'll give him a reason to be afraid of me."

His hand rose, cupping her cheek. "But you.... You can't falter. What ever he says, however he looks at you, you hold your head high."

Her eyes stung. "I don't know if I'm strong enough."

"You are," he whispered fiercely. "You're stronger than both of them. Stronger than you believe."

Her chest ached. "And if they force me into an engagement?"

His expression turned deadly. "Then Marcus won't live to see the wedding."

Her breath caught at the raw promise in his words. Dangerous. Reckless. And yet, a part of her clung to that danger because it was the only shield she had left for a moment, the silence wrapped them, fragile and intimate.

He pressed a kiss to her forehead, lingering, as though imprinting himself on her. Then he was gone, swallowed by the night.

Marcus stood in the senator's study, smug and energized. "I've found a lead," he announced, laying a photograph on the desk.

Ariella froze when she caught a glimpse. A blurry image of Dominic in the crowd at the gala, half__hidden but unmistakable to her eyes. Her father leaned forward. "Who is he?"

"Not sure yet," Marcus said smoothly. "But i will find out."
Ariella forced herself to breathe evenly, though terror gnawed at her inside. Dominic's game had begun.

••••

Marcus had been hunting shadows for days. Each lead drew him closer or so he thought. He followed whispers in back alleys, names in half burned ledgers, men who swore they saw the mysterious figure at the gala.

Every trail ends the same way. Too neated. Too convenient, like bread crumbs deliberately scattered. And yet, Marcus's obsession only grew.

By the end of the week, he sat in his car across from an abandoned warehouse at the edge of the city. His driver shifted uneasily. "Sir, are you certain this is wise? The contact was...... vague."

Marcus smiled coldly, tapping ash from his cigarette. "The man who crossed me isn't vague. He's cocky. And cocky men always leave a trail."

He pushed open the car door. "Wait here."

The warehouse was dark, the air thick with dust. His footsteps echoed as he moved inside. A single chair sat beneath a dangling lightbulb, papers scattered across the floor. On the chair lay a photograph.

He picked it up. The image was sharp. Deliberate__Marcus himself, captured at the gala with his hand pressed a little too familiarly on Ariella's waist. His jaw tightened from the dark, a voice rolled low and calm. "Not flattering, is it? Being caught in the wrong moment."

Marcus spun, hand reaching instinctively for the gun tucked at his belt. Dominic stepped from the darkness, dressed in black, his expression unreadable, dangerous. "You," Marcus hissed.

"Me," Dominic answered, closing the distance with deliberate slowness.

His eyes gleamed like steel. "You've been chasing ghosts, Marcus. But ghosts don't bleed. Men do."

Marcus's grip tightened on his gun, but something in Dominic's calm unsettled him. This wasn't a man cornered. This was a man waiting. "You think you can scare me?" Marcus sneered, though his voice faltered at the edges. "You're nothing but a stray looking for scraps."

Dominic's lips curved in a lethal half _smile. "Then why are you trembling?"

Marcus stiffened. "I'm not___"

Dominic stepped closer, so close Marcus felt the heat radiating off him. "You're used to preying on women. Politicians daughters. Easy targets. But me?"

His voice dropped to a growl. "I'll break you before you ever touch her."

Marcus stomach clenched, though he forced a laugh. "Her? You mean Ariella?" He tilted his head mockingly. "Interesting. You've just confirmed my suspicions."

Dominic's eyes narrowed, a flicker of danger flashing through them, but he didn't strike. Not yet. Instead, he leaned in, his voice a razor against Marcus's ear. "Run back to your senator and tell him you've found nothing. Because if you whisper my name to him..... I'll make sure he finds your body floating in the harbor before he ever learns the truth."

To be continued...

💘 Chapter 27 💘 28 💘

Back at the estate, the atmosphere was heavier than before. Her father was waiting in the grand hall, Marcus lurking just behind him, his smirk carved in place.

The senator's voice was low, intimidating. "We'll be having dinner tonight with a few..... associates. You will sit by my side, Ariella. You will smile and you will not embarrass me. Do i make myself clear?"

"Yes, father,"she whispered.

Marcus's eyes glittered, victorious.

***

The Montgomery dining hall glittered with polished silver, chandeliers, casting golden light across a table set for power. Politicians, businessmen, and silent body guards filled the long room, laughter and sharp deals weaving through the air.

Ariella sat stiffly beside her father at the head of the table, her gown elegant, her smile carefully painted on.

Every gesture felt rehearsed, every word monitored.

Across the table, Marcus lounged with his usual arrogance, wine glass in hand. His gaze never left her.

"Ladies and gentlemen," senator Charles said, raising his glass. "To loyalty, the one currency that never loses value."

The toast echoed, glasses clinking. Ariella sipped, her stomach churning. Marcus leaned forward, voice smooth. "Speaking of loyalty, senator, your daughter was quite the star at the gala. She captivated everyone especially one man in particular."

The room hummed with curiosity.

Ariella's blood turned to ice. Her father's eyes narrowed. "What man?"

Marcus smiled like a serpent. "A stranger. Talk, dark, commanding. They shared a rather...... intimate dance."

A few guests chuckled. Murmurs spreading. Ariella fought to keep her composure. "It was nothing," she said quickly, her voice steady despite her racing heart. "A simple dance out of courtesy."

But Marcus pressed his tone mocking. "Ah, but courtesy rarely lingers in the eyes the way i saw it linger in his."

Her father's fists slammed against the table, the sound silencing the room. "Enough," his voice was steel. "My daughter's conduct is not up for discussion."

Marcus bowed his head slightly, feigning humility. "Of course, senator. I only meant to compliment her beauty. Surely, any man would be tempted."

Ariella wanted to scream. She felt like prey under a predator's gaze, trapped while everyone else laughed and drank around them. Then, out of the corner of her eyes she caught a shadow near the balcony doors.

Her pulse skipped. Dominic. He stood at the edge of the room, dressed in a waiter's uniform, tray in hand.

Only she recognized the fire in his eyes. She dropped her gaze immediately, afraid her father would notice the heat burning through her. But Dominic's presence steadied her, gave her the strength to hold her head higher.

As dinner wore on, Marcus leaned close again, his words soft enough for only her to hear. "Careful, Ariella. One wrong glance, and your father will know everything."

Her lips curved into a brittle smile. "Then perhaps you should stop staring at me so much."

His grin faltered, just slightly.

****

Meanwhile, Dominic moved silently through the room, refilling glasses, listening. At one point, he leaned over Marcus's shoulder to pour wine. "Careful," Dominic murmured low enough for only Marcus to hear. "Wouldn't want to stain your shirt."

Marcus stiffened, startled by the deep timbre of his voice, but when he glanced up, the waiter was already gone. Blending into the crowds. For the first time that night, Ariella saw unease flicker across Marcus's face.

Dinner ended with ci**rs and brandy. Her father rose, clapping Marcus on the back. "Walk with me, son. There are no matters to discuss.'

Marcus shot Ariella one last smug glance before following the senator out. The moment the room cleared, Ariella slipped out of the balcony, her lungs desperate for air. "Breathe," came a familiar voice.

She spun, and Dominic was there, pulling off the servant's jacket, tossing it aside. His eyes were molten, his presence over whelming. "You shouldn't be here,"she whispered, though every fiber of her being ached to fall into his arms.

"I had to see you,"he growled. "And i had to see him."

Her hands trembled. "He's poisoning my father against me."

"I know," Dominic said, stepping closer, his hand brushing hers. "But tonight, i planted the first seed of doubt in his mind. Marcus isn't as untouchable as he thinks."

She looked up at him, fear and hope warring in his chest. "And what happens when my father finds out you were here?"

Dominic's lips curved into a dangerous smile. "Then the real game begins."

Their eyes locked, and for a heartbeat, the rest of the world fell away__the scheming, the threats , the danger.

It was just them, standing on the edge of destruction, and yet drawn together like fire and gasoline. His hand rose, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face.

"Ariella....."

Her breath hitched. "Someone will see__"

He cut her off with a kiss, deep and searing. Stealing her breath, branding her with his fire. And though terror knotted in her stomach, she kissed him back with all the desperation of a woman dancing on the edge of a blade.

****

The morning after the dinner stretched heavy over the estate. Ariella sat at her vanity, staring at her pale reflection. Her lips still tingled from Dominic's kiss , a dangerous memory she couldn't erase.

Her maid knocked gently. "Miss Ariella? The senator requests your presence in the library."

Her pulse quickened. Requests from her father were never truly requests.

When she entered the library, senator Charles was already standing by the window, sunlight glinting off the steel of his cufflinks.

Marcus lounged in an arm chair opposite, sipping espresso with infuriating ease.

"Ariella," her father said, his tone clipped. "Sit."

She obeyed, folding her hands tightly in her lap.

"I've been considering your future," the senator continued. "It's time we arrange an engagement. A union that strengthens this family's influence."

Ariella's breath caught. "Engagement?"

Marcus's smile curved. "How fortunate. I've always been fond of family."

The implication made her stomach twist.

TBC.

💘 Chapter 25 💘 26 💘

Dominic's expression darkened, lethal. "I'll kill him.

"No!,"she grabbed his arm, desperation in her touch. "If you do anything now, he'll go straight to my father. Dominic, he's waiting for you to make a move that's his leverage."

His jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might shatter. "And what about you? You think I'll stand by while he puts his hands on you? While he tries to black mail you?"

Her eyes filled with tears. "I can handle him. Please. Just...... promise me you won't be reckless." He caught her chin, tilting her face up until their eyes locked. "You shouldn't have to handle anything. I swore I'd protect you, Ariella. I won't let anyone use you__not your father. Not Marcus. No one."

Her breath hitched. "And if protecting me destroys you?"

His thumb brushed her lip, slow and aching. "Then I'll gladly burn."

Their lips hovered dangerously close, her entire body aching for him. But she forced herself to step back, trembling. "Not here. Too many eyes."

Dominic exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through his hair. "Fine. But listen to me carefully." His gaze hardened. "Marcus is a snake. I'll set a trap.

If he makes a single wrong move, he'll hang himself with his own lies. Until then__stay away from him."

Ariella nodded, though fear gnawed at her. "And what about my father?"

Dominic's smile was sharp, merciless. "Your father's eyes maybe everywhere__but he's not the only one who can play this game."

The sound of approaching footsteps made them both tense. Dominic faded back into the shadows, gone in an instant.

Ariella stood frozen, heart hammering until Marcus reappeared, glass of wine in hand. "There you are,"he drawled. "Your father's looking for you."

His eyes flicked to the shadows, suspicion gleaming. Ariella forced a tight smile. "Then i shouldn't keep him waiting." As she brushed past Marcus, she could feel Dominic's promise lingering in the dark.

Marcus thought he was holding the knife. But she knew now__Dominic was sharpening his own.

√••••

The estate was quiet, almost oppressively so. The gala had ended hours ago, but Ariella couldn't sleep. Every creak of the old house made her flinch, every move seemed to hold Marcus's mocking smile.

When dawn broke, she found herself summoned to her father's study.

The room always felt like a court room__mahogany shelves stacked with law books, heavy curtains shutting out the light, the faint smell of to***co clinging to the air.

Senator Charles sat behind his desk, fingers steepled, his eyes as sharp as razors. "Ariella,"he said evenly. "Sit."

Her throat tightened, but she obeyed.

"I've been hearing whispers,"he began, his voice deceptively calm. "That your behavior at the gala was.... unusual."

Her stomach dropped. "Unusual?"

"You slipped away from the ballroom. Twice and you danced with a man i didn't recognize." His gaze pinned her. "Do you care to explain?"

Her palms dampened. "I felt unwell," she said quickly. "The crowd was over whelming. As for the dance....it was a polite courtesy. Nothing more."

His silence stretched, cold and suffocating. Then finally, he leaned back in his chair. "You're my daughter. That means your actions reflect on me. If anyone believes you are.... compromised, it will be used against us."

Ariella forced her chin up. "I would never do anything to dishonor you, father."

He studied her, searching for cracks. "See that you don't.

The dismissal was sharp. She stood, knees weak and escaped into the corridor.

Marcus leaned casually against the wall, a wolf in tailored silk. "You lie better than i expected,"he murmured.

Her jaw clenched. "What did you tell him?"

"Only that you seemed..... distracted." He smirked. "He's suspicious now. It wouldn't take much more for him to start digging."

"Why are you doing this?" Her voice shook with fury.

"Because i can." He leaned close, whispering. "And because watching you squirm is almost as satisfying as the other things i want from you."

She shoved past him, her pulse hammering.

••••

Same day, she found herself pacing the gardens, desperate for air, when her phone buzzed.

He's cracking. Meet me same place.

Her heart lurched. Dominic. She slipped out through the servant's gate and hurried to the abandoned warehouse where they sometimes meet.

The moment she stepped inside, Dominic was there, shadows clinging to his broad frame. He pulled her close, his lips brushing her temple. "Did he question you?"

"Yes," her voice broke. "Marcus told him something. My father asked about the dance. He's watching me now."

Dominic's jaw hardened. "Exactly as i planned."

Her head snapped up. "What?"

"I've been feeding Marcus pieces of information. Small, believable fragments. Enough to make him restless."

Dominic's eyes gleamed with dangerous calculation. "He thinks he's clever, running to your father with crumbs. But the more he talks, the more he'll expose his own greed."

"You're baiting him."

"Yes, "Dominic said simply. "And when he reaches too far__he'll fall."

Fear twisted in her chest. "And if he drags me down with him?"

Dominic cupped her face, his thumb stroking her cheek. "Then I'll tear the world apart before i let that happen."

Her breath shuddered. "Dominic....."

He kissed her then, fierce and hungry. As if the danger itself fueled the fire between them.

Her body melted against his, every nerve screaming for more. When he finally pulled back, his voice was rough. "Trust me, Ariella. Marcus is sealing his fate."

Her phone buzzed again. This time, it was from the house keeper. "Your father wants you home. Urgent."

Her blood ran cold. "I have to go."

Dominic caught her wrist, his eyes burning with both fury and longing. "Be careful. One mis step, and he'll smell blood."

She nodded, heart breaking as the slipped away.

To be continued.

💘 Chapter 23 💘 24 💘

His gaze lifted, colliding with hers like a spark catching flame. The world fell away.

Heat rushed through her, dangerous and undeniable. He didn't move toward her__he couldn't... but the hunger in his eyes stripped her bare. "Miss Montgomery."

A hand touched her arm. She startled, turning to find a family acquaintance smiling politely. She murmured the required pleasantries, all the while feeling Dominic's gaze burning across the room.

Minutes stretched into eternity as the orchestra shifted into a slow waltz, Dominic slipped from the crowd, cutting through the throng with predatory grace. He stopped a breath away from her, bowing slightly. "Miss Montgomery," he said smoothly, his voice pitched for polite company.

"Would you honor me with a dance?"

Her heart skipped wildly. She placed her hand in his, and he led her onto the floor. The moment his arm circled her waist, every nerve in her body came alive. "You shouldn't be here," she whispered, her lips barely moving.

"And miss the chance to hold you in front of the whole city?" His mouth curved into the faintest smirk. "Never."

Her chest tightened. "If my father sees us__"

"Then he'll see nothing but two strangers sharing a dance."

His grip tightened at her waist, his eyes blazing. "But you and i will know the truth."

They moved in perfect rhythm, bodies closer than propriety allowed. Each step was a secret, each turn a stolen heart beat. "You look terrified,". Dominic murmured.

"Marcus suspects," she said. "He threatened me last night."

His jaw clenched. "I'll deal with him."

"Dominic, please," she pleaded softly. "If you make a move now, he'll run straight to my father."

"Then I'll bide my time,"he growled. "But if he touches you again__" His words cut off as someone cleared their throat sharply.

Marcus.

He stood at the edge of the dance floor, a smug smile tugging at his lips as his eyes flicked between them. "May i cut in?", he asked smoothly.

Dominic's hand tightened possessively at Ariella's waist. His eyes locked on Marcus, dangerous, unyielding.

For a moment, the tension was razor sharp, the orchestra swelling around them.

Ariella's breath caught. Caught between the two men __her forbidden love and her enemy who held their secret like a knife.

Dominic released her hand, his voice cool. "Of course. Miss Montgomery deserves to be entertained." He stepped back, his eyes lingering on hers with a silent promise. "This isn't over."

Marcus took her hand, spinning her into his arms with mock gallantry. His smile was poisonous. "Careful, Ariella. Dancing with devils has consequences."

She forced herself not to flinch, though her skin crawled at his touch. Across the room, she could feel Dominic watching.

His presence a storm waiting to break. And she knew__Tonight, the game had changed.

•••

The gala bled into the early hours of the morning. Guests laughed, glasses clinked, since that stolen dance.

Dominic's touch still lingered on her skin. His gaze still burned inside her. But it was Marcus's eyes that haunted her now. He had seen too much.

As the orchestra played it's final note, she slipped away from the ballroom, her gown brushing the marble floors.

She needed air, space to breathe __"Running away so soon?" The voice slid like poison through her veins.

She turned sharply. Marcus leaned against the terrace railing, the glow of the city behind him. His smirk was lazy, but his eyes were sharp, hungry. "I'm not running,"Ariella said, forcing her voice steady. "Just stepping outside."

He stepped closer, trapping her against the cold stone wall. "You dance beautifully, Ariella. Especially with him."

Her breath caught. "You're imagining things."

"Am i?" He tilted his head, his smile dark. "The way he looked at you? The way you melted in his arms. That wasn't imagination. That was desire. Dangerous desire."

Her pulse thudded. Painfully. "You're drunk."

"No," his voice lowered, chilling. "I'm observant and i know your father. If he ever suspected you were consorting with Dominic Veyron, he'd kill you first and ask questions later."

Ariella stiffened. "You wouldn't dare tell him."

Marcus's smirk widened. "Wouldn't I? Unless, of course..... you make it worth my while."

Disgust churned in her stomach. "You're vile."

He leaned closer, his breath hot against her ear. "Think carefully. One word from me, and Dominic is a dead man. Your father has men everywhere. But if you keep me..... entertained, perhaps I'll keep your little secret safe."

Ariella shoved him back, fury flashing in her eyes. "I'd rather burn in hell than give you what you want."

Marcus's smile hardened, his mask of charm slipping. "Then prepare yourself, Ariella. Because secrets don't stay buried forever."

He turned and walked back into the ballroom, leaving her trembling, fists clenched, heart threatening to shatter. Her phone buzzed in her clutch. She pulled it out with shaking hands.

Terrace. Two minutes.

She hesitated, then hurried down the path to a darker corner of the hotel gardens.

Dominic emerged from the shadows, his suit jacket gone, his tie loose. His eyes burning with restrained fury. "What happened?", he demanded.

Her voice cracked. "Marcus corned me. He threatened to tell my father...... unless i__" she swallowed hard. "Unless i give him what he wants."

Dominic's expression darkened, lethal. "I'll kill him.
