In fulfillment of NEMA mandate to deliver timely humanitarian support, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) authorized the release of relief materials to flood victims in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State. The exercise was coordinated by a team led by the Head of the Operations Office.

The distribution took place on May 1, 2026, at the Mbaitoli LGA Secretariat Complex. Mr. Igwe Nnamdi Chukwudi, Head of NEMA’s Owerri Operations Office, conveyed the goodwill message of Director General Zubaida Umar and expressed sympathy to the affected residents. He also encouraged the community to adopt preventive measures against future flooding.

Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, former representative of Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency, commended NEMA’s leadership and assured that the relief materials would be equitably shared among the affected communities. Hon. Ifunanya Lactus Nwanegwo, Chairman of Mbaitoli LGA, expressed appreciation to both NEMA and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), pledging that the items would reach those most in need.

Stakeholders in Attendance:
Representatives from NEMA, IMSEMA, Mbaitoli LGA leadership, the Police, and local vigilante groups participated in the exercise to coordinate efforts and ensure fair distribution.

The Head of Operations, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Owerri Operational Office, Mr. Nnamdi Chukwudi Igwe, today, April 30, 2026, received a delegation from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the NEMA Owerri office.

The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in emergency preparedness and response, particularly at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport.

Under the agreement, NEMA will provide critical resources, expertise, and logistics support during emergencies, while FAAN’s Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) will ensure prompt response, effective coordination, and continuous communication with stakeholders.

Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property through coordinated action and national service.

Discussions also covered training programmes and key emergency management issues, followed by group photographs.

The National Emergency Management Agency, Owerri Operations Office on the 17th April, 2026 has conducted an on-the-spot Emergency Assessment across various communities and Local Governments. The assessment exercise carried out by NEMA, SEMA, NGOs , Community and Local Government representatives cut across varying scenarios of disasters in the state . Findings revealed that ‎between 8–17 April 2026, several emergencies occurred across different parts of the State at different times and varying degrees, including Windstorms, Flash Flooding and Fire outbreak. These incidents have caused widespread disruption, damages and increased humanitarian needs for the affected people.

‎At the Ndebem Umuikwuoma Uzoitem, Bende LGA a widespread and large scale windstorm and flood has affected numerous buildings including private and public, churches and economic trees were recorded. The incident also affected a connecting bridge at umuokoeyi village as a result of overflow of rain water disrupting human and vehicular movements .

‎At Isiala Ngwa LGA, Ama Apu Ntigha community, windstorm disaster affected source of energy as many electric pole and wires were felled by the ravaging windstorm.

‎The assessment team proceeded to Aba South where they assessed a Fire incident at the Nigerian Breweries where investigations was still ongoing to unravel the cause of the inferno. Though the fire was contained at the company, serious damages and losses were injured as a result.

‎At the Osisioma Ngwa, Aba LGA, a Shredding and Recycling Rubber and Plastic Production company was severely burnt down by Fire. The cause of Fire was suspected to be electric surge/failure. The incident affected properties and goods valued in millions including company buildings, raw materials, Chemicals, water tankers, motor cycles and industrial machines

On 28th March 2026, the Owerri Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), led by Mr. Nnamdi Chukwudi Igwe, in collaboration with the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), conducted an on-the-spot assessment of fire outbreaks in Umuahia South and Aba South LGAs of Abia State. The incidents, reported in Umuobasi, Nkata Ubeku, Umunwanwa, and Ezeukwu communities, were primarily caused by electrical power surges and resulted in the destruction of residential buildings, a church staff quarters, and properties worth millions of naira, leaving several households, including a widow, homeless, though no casualties were recorded. The assessment highlighted a high vulnerability to electrical hazards, with affected persons in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, while community representatives commended the prompt response of NEMA and SEMA.

On 7 March 2026, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Owerri Operations Office, in collaboration with the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (ABSEMA), conducted a rapid field assessment of the Market fire outbreak in Umuahia South and the gully erosion in Ohafia Local Government Areas of Abia State.

The assessment team, led by the Head of Operations, Mr. Igwe Nnamdi Chukwudi, was formally received by the Honourable Member representing Ohafia in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mba. Following a brief meeting, the Honourable Member directed the team to proceed with on-site evaluations in the affected communities.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Owerri Operations Office, has commenced the distribution of relief materials to communities in Ohafia and Bende Local Government Areas of Abia State affected by recent communal clashes.

Representing the Head of Operations, Mrs. Nwagbara Akudo expressed sympathy to the victims during the flag-off ceremony held on March 19, 2026, at the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) warehouse in Umuahia. She encouraged community leaders to focus on resolving and preventing the underlying causes of such conflicts.

Dr. Sunday Jackson, Executive Secretary of Abia SEMA, thanked the NEMA Director-General for the prompt intervention and assured that the relief items would be shared equitably among the affected households.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Chief Uduma Chiemeze and Dr. Kenneth Anyanechi from Ohafia and Bende communities conveyed gratitude to both the federal and state governments for their timely support.

- Cartons of seasoning cubes
