PDP Wins Big as Mike Ejiogu Dumps APC, Rejoins PDP in Imo
Says: “I am back to my roots, to strengthen it”
The ranks of the Hon. Austine Nwachukwu-led Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been further bolstered as top business mogul and first-rate politician, Chief Mike Ejiogu, dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and officially defected to the PDP.
He was received by the party's executive in his Osuama/Anara Ward, in the presence of the executives of the Isiala Mbano LGA and Okigwe Zone chapters of the party, during a colourful ceremony at his official residence, where he was formally admitted into the party and issued a membership card.
Ejiogu, a grassroots politician, community leader, real estate magnate, and philanthropist, is massively loved in the State and enjoys the followership and support of top political leaders and the masses across party lines.
The blockbuster defection is widely regarded as a tremendous addition to the PDP and a huge loss to the APC and other parties, given Ejiogu's wide acceptability and political pull.
He was a founding member of the PDP in 1998 and a major financier of the party from then until he formerly left its platform. Having played significant roles in strengthening the party in Isiala Mbano LGA, he was pivotal to former Governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim's victory in the 2007 governorship election and his eventual defection to the PDP from the PPA.
Chief Ejiogu is expected to move in with many political leaders and youths from various other political parties.
Addressing PDP officers after receiving his membership card, Ejiogu, who is the Traditional Prime Minister (TPM) of Anara Ancient Kingdom and Onowu of Igboland, was effusive in expressing his delight at rejoining the party, which he described as his home and roots, admitting that he is in the party to ensure it is ultimately victorious at all levels.
He credited the National Secretary of PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, with being hugely influential in his decision.
“I am glad to return to where it all started in 1998. I was a founding member of the PDP in Imo State in 1998. We made PDP formidable in Isiala Mbano and Okigwe Zone in those days and touched many lives positively. I started with the party from the very first day. This is my home. This is my roots,” Ejiogu said, reminiscing about his early days in the party.
“I resigned from the APC recently, and I told the party that I wanted to go back to my home to rebuild it, making it stronger and more formidable.
“PDP is today on the right track. Let us do everything to keep this peace, unity, and togetherness that now exist in the party, and which aligns with my philosophy. The idea is to ensure that the PDP is victorious at all levels. I pledge to remain committed and steadfast with this party because it is our own. I feel at home.”
Welcoming him, the PDP State Vice Chairman for Okigwe Senatorial Zone, Chief Amb. Chuks Ajaelu, while expressing delight over the development, stated that his defection signals the renewed energy and acceptance of the party after a period of battle against fifth columnists.
In his remarks, the State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, who also hails from Isiala Mbano LGA, commended Ejiogu for his decision, describing it as visionary and thoughtful. He added that the PDP in the State is delighted to have him again, given his towering credentials. Obiaku described the party as the mother of all political parties in the country.
Ejiogu's entrance into the PDP adds further gloss to an ongoing wave of defections into the party in Imo State.
Recently, a former Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, announced his exit from the APC and his defection to the PDP, among many others.
Several other high-profile additions to the PDP are expected in the coming days and weeks as the opposition party continues to look good ahead of the 2027 elections. These defectors are already bringing along with them thousands of Imolites into the party's platform.
Present at the ceremony included: the State Vice Chairman (Okigwe), Chief Amb. Chuks Ajaelu; Zonal Secretary, Hon. David Nwosu; Zonal Woman Leader, Hon. Clara Ugha; Zonal Youth Leader, Hon. Ugochukwu Izuchukwu; Zonal Organizing Secretary, Hon. Beke Josiah; Zonal Ex-Officio, Kingsley Egbechue; the Isiala Mbano LGA Chairman, Sir Ikechukwu Ajaero, and his exco members; and the Osuama/Anara Ward Chairman, Arc. Arinze Samuel, and his exco members.
Other leaders present included the State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku; State Auditor and former Onuimo State Assembly member, Hon. Damian Ogu; Chief Kizito Ajaelu; Chief Kenneth Egwuasi; Chief Raymond Aguguo; Hon. Bernard Uwakwe; and others.
