PDP Wins Big as Mike Ejiogu Dumps APC, Rejoins PDP in Imo

Says: “I am back to my roots, to strengthen it”

The ranks of the Hon. Austine Nwachukwu-led Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been further bolstered as top business mogul and first-rate politician, Chief Mike Ejiogu, dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and officially defected to the PDP.

He was received by the party's executive in his Osuama/Anara Ward, in the presence of the executives of the Isiala Mbano LGA and Okigwe Zone chapters of the party, during a colourful ceremony at his official residence, where he was formally admitted into the party and issued a membership card.

Ejiogu, a grassroots politician, community leader, real estate magnate, and philanthropist, is massively loved in the State and enjoys the followership and support of top political leaders and the masses across party lines.

The blockbuster defection is widely regarded as a tremendous addition to the PDP and a huge loss to the APC and other parties, given Ejiogu's wide acceptability and political pull.

He was a founding member of the PDP in 1998 and a major financier of the party from then until he formerly left its platform. Having played significant roles in strengthening the party in Isiala Mbano LGA, he was pivotal to former Governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim's victory in the 2007 governorship election and his eventual defection to the PDP from the PPA.

Chief Ejiogu is expected to move in with many political leaders and youths from various other political parties.

Addressing PDP officers after receiving his membership card, Ejiogu, who is the Traditional Prime Minister (TPM) of Anara Ancient Kingdom and Onowu of Igboland, was effusive in expressing his delight at rejoining the party, which he described as his home and roots, admitting that he is in the party to ensure it is ultimately victorious at all levels.

He credited the National Secretary of PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, with being hugely influential in his decision.

“I am glad to return to where it all started in 1998. I was a founding member of the PDP in Imo State in 1998. We made PDP formidable in Isiala Mbano and Okigwe Zone in those days and touched many lives positively. I started with the party from the very first day. This is my home. This is my roots,” Ejiogu said, reminiscing about his early days in the party.

“I resigned from the APC recently, and I told the party that I wanted to go back to my home to rebuild it, making it stronger and more formidable.

“PDP is today on the right track. Let us do everything to keep this peace, unity, and togetherness that now exist in the party, and which aligns with my philosophy. The idea is to ensure that the PDP is victorious at all levels. I pledge to remain committed and steadfast with this party because it is our own. I feel at home.”

Welcoming him, the PDP State Vice Chairman for Okigwe Senatorial Zone, Chief Amb. Chuks Ajaelu, while expressing delight over the development, stated that his defection signals the renewed energy and acceptance of the party after a period of battle against fifth columnists.

In his remarks, the State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, who also hails from Isiala Mbano LGA, commended Ejiogu for his decision, describing it as visionary and thoughtful. He added that the PDP in the State is delighted to have him again, given his towering credentials. Obiaku described the party as the mother of all political parties in the country.

Ejiogu's entrance into the PDP adds further gloss to an ongoing wave of defections into the party in Imo State.

Recently, a former Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, announced his exit from the APC and his defection to the PDP, among many others.

Several other high-profile additions to the PDP are expected in the coming days and weeks as the opposition party continues to look good ahead of the 2027 elections. These defectors are already bringing along with them thousands of Imolites into the party's platform.

Present at the ceremony included: the State Vice Chairman (Okigwe), Chief Amb. Chuks Ajaelu; Zonal Secretary, Hon. David Nwosu; Zonal Woman Leader, Hon. Clara Ugha; Zonal Youth Leader, Hon. Ugochukwu Izuchukwu; Zonal Organizing Secretary, Hon. Beke Josiah; Zonal Ex-Officio, Kingsley Egbechue; the Isiala Mbano LGA Chairman, Sir Ikechukwu Ajaero, and his exco members; and the Osuama/Anara Ward Chairman, Arc. Arinze Samuel, and his exco members.

Other leaders present included the State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku; State Auditor and former Onuimo State Assembly member, Hon. Damian Ogu; Chief Kizito Ajaelu; Chief Kenneth Egwuasi; Chief Raymond Aguguo; Hon. Bernard Uwakwe; and others.

Imo PDP Sets Sights on 2027 Elections, Intensifies Membership Registration Drive

— As Sen. Anyanwu predicts massive defections into the party

The leadership of the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the LGA and Ward chapters of the party to intensify efforts to ensure that all members complete the ongoing e-registration, while also driving the enrolment of new members.

This formed part of the resolutions reached at the party's special Executive Council meeting held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the party's State Secretariat, 98 Okigwe Road, Owerri.

The State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Austine Nwachukwu, who appreciated the progress recorded in the registration exercise so far, noted that the move to expedite and intensify the e-registration aligns with the intention of the Imo State chapter of the PDP to set the pace, not only within the party but also among other political parties.

The Chairman, therefore, urged the party's teeming members to immediately complete their online registration on the official website https://pdpnigeria.org/, while tasking LGA and Ward Chairmen with stronger mobilization to achieve excellent results.

He declared the PDP platform open to Imolites from all walks of life, including those intending to contest for offices, adding that the PDP remains the most organized, deeply rooted, democratic, and welcoming political party in the State, operating under a unified leadership devoid of crisis.

In his remarks, the National Secretary and leader of the party in Imo State, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, enthused that following the PDP National Convention, which produced a legally and widely recognized leadership, the party is now well-positioned for the 2027 general elections.

He stated that a sweeping wave of defections by top-ranking and influential politicians into the party is imminent, noting that this development reflects the renewed confidence in the party and its leadership in the State, especially after the resolution of the leadership issues at the national level.

The party also outlined other programmes to follow the recently concluded Women Summit, the ongoing Imo PDP Football Tournament, and the forthcoming Youth Summit, as it seeks to reach and empower more Imolites.

These laudable programmes and policies rolled out by the Imo PDP have been widely viewed across various quarters as a confirmation of the party's age-long practice of people-oriented governance, which continues to sustain its platform with massive followership in every nook and cranny of the State.

This also lends credence to the leadership dexterity of Sen. Samuel Anyanwu and Rt. Hon. Austine Nwachukwu as the State leader and State Chairman of the party, respectively.

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejoices with its State Organizing Secretary, Amb. Felix Obirieze Nwosu, JP, who joyously marks his birthday today.

Nwosu, a recipient of the Global Ambassador for Peace award from the Universal Peace Federation, is an enterprising and hardworking man whose wealth of experience and industry has been pivotal to the smooth steering of Imo PDP’s affairs in recent times.

He is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Centre for Peace and Positive Leadership, and was former Acting Secretary of the Owerri Senatorial District chapter of the party.

A loyal party man since 1999, Nwosu has served in various other capacities. He is renowned as a great youth mobilizer and had, in the past, aspired to the Chairmanship and State Assembly seats of Ngor-Okpala LGA, where he hails from.

Revised INEC Timetable: Imo PDP Ready, Committed To 2027 Elections

— Urges members, aspirants to remain steadfast, intensify preparation

The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Imo State chapter, acknowledges the issuance of the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has now rescheduled the National Assembly elections to hold on January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.

The party in Imo State, in keeping with the leadership directives of the National Caretaker Working Committee, reassures its members and supporters that it is committed and ready to prosecute the 2027 elections and emerge victorious.

Imo PDP draws confidence from the fact that the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) is doing everything necessary to ensure that all internal party disputes and pending litigations involving the party are “diligently pursued and conclusively resolved well ahead of the window provided for political parties to conduct their primaries.”

The party stands firm and fully prepared to “meet all constitutional and regulatory requirements within the stipulated timelines.”

Also, preparations for the all-inclusive National Convention in Abuja, scheduled for March 28 and 29, 2026, have intensified, and the Imo contingent is excited and ready to be part of the exercise, which will go a long way toward ushering in the much-needed stability and prosperity of the PDP in the country.

Imo PDP, therefore, urges intending aspirants to remain calm, focused, and to continue their preparations with vigour while awaiting further directives from the leadership of our great party.

The Hon. Austin Nwachukwu-led SWC further reassures the people of Imo State of the party’s readiness not only to continue offering credible opposition but also to provide outstanding leadership and reliable alternatives at all levels for good governance, accountability, security, peace, and sustainable development in our dear state.

Members, leaders, stakeholders, and supporters of the party in Imo State are equally urged to remain loyal, steadfast, work harder, and intensify grassroots mobilization ahead of the upcoming electioneering season.
