Federal Fire Service Imo State Command Marks International Firefighters' Day with Public Safety Sensitization for FOWA Women

In commemoration of International Firefighters' Day, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command, DSF Onyeukwu Chioma, sensitized members of the Fire Officers Wives Association (FOWA) on the importance of public safety and fire prevention.

The sensitization programme formed part of activities to mark the global observance, aimed at honoring the bravery and dedication of firefighters while promoting safety awareness in communities.

Speaking during the session, DSF Onyeukwu Chioma emphasized the vital role women play in ensuring safety within homes and neighborhoods. She outlined common causes of fire outbreaks, including electrical faults, gas leakages, and careless handling of flammable materials.

Participants were educated on fire prevention strategies, proper use of fire extinguishers, and emergency response actions to minimize damage and save lives during fire incidents.

She further encouraged members of FOWA to act as safety advocates by sharing the knowledge gained with others, thereby helping to reduce fire hazards across communities.

In her remarks, the Chairperson of FOWA Dr Precious Elozieuwa expressed appreciation to the Federal Fire Service for organizing the programme and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote public safety.

Federal Fire Service Imo State Command Sensitizes Public on Fire in Rural Areas

The Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command, held an educative radio programme at Omalicha Radio Station 91.1 FM to enlighten the public on fire prevention in rural areas.

The programme was delivered by the Public Relations Officer, DSF Onyeukwu Chioma, who spoke on common causes of fire outbreaks in rural communities, such as bush burning, unattended cooking, open flames, and faulty electrical connections.

She explained that fires spread quickly in rural areas due to dry vegetation and limited access to firefighting services.

She advised residents to:

Avoid uncontrolled bush burning

Never leave cooking or fire unattended

Keep flammable materials away from fire

Handle fuel and other items carefully

Report fire outbreaks quickly

She also encouraged residents to stay alert and take safety precautions to prevent fires.

The Federal Fire Service, Zone E Imo State Command, swiftly responded to a fire outbreak on April 23, 2026, at about 11:06hrs. The incident took place at 96 Njiribeako Street Owerri, Imo State.

The fire call was reported by Hon Uche Chibueze Obasi. It is a fire involving the right wing flat on the last floor of a two storey building on an area measuring 50sqmtrs by 100sqmtrs, used for school

Thanks to the prompt intervention of our gallant officers led by DSF Onyeneke, the fire was quickly brought under control using one medium jet of water and foam compound from the fire appliance. Although property worth about ₦10,000,000 was destroyed, the timely response of the Firefighters saved property valued at approximately ₦200,000,000. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.

The Federal Fire Service, Zone E Imo State Command, swiftly responded to a fire outbreak on April 21, 2026, at about 15:40hrs. The incident took place at Umukoto, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State.

The fire call was reported by the wife of DSF Uche. It is a fire involving a shop container with eletrical wires above the zinc, built on an area measuring 50sqmtrs by 50sqmtrs, used for business purpose.

Thanks to the prompt intervention of our gallant officers led by SF Anowa, the fire was quickly brought under control using one medium jet of water and foam compound from the fire appliance. Although property worth about ₦500,000 was destroyed, the timely response of the Firefighters saved property valued at approximately ₦10,000,000. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.

The Federal Fire Service, Zone E Imo State Command, swiftly responded to a fire outbreak on April 21, 2026, at about 11:30hrs. The incident took place at No 12 Harritex Avenue, New Owerri, Imo State.

The fire call was reported by DSF Ezeigwe. It is a fire involving the under stair case of a duplex, built on an area measuring 100sqmtrs by 50sqmtrs, used for residential purpose.

Thanks to the prompt intervention of our gallant officers led by DSF Okorie, the fire was quickly brought under control using one medium jet of water from the fire appliance. Although property worth about ₦12,000,000 was destroyed, the timely response of the Firefighters saved property valued at approximately ₦400,000,000. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.

NDLEA Trains Federal Fire Service Officers in Zone E, Imo State Command

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently conducted a training session for officers and men of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Zone E Headquarters, Imo State Command, as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and strengthen inter-agency collaboration.

Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command Sensitizes Public on Proper Placement of Fire Extinguishers

The Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command, held an educative radio programme at Omalicha Radio Station 91.1 FM on the proper siting of fire extinguishers.

The session was delivered by the Public Relations Officer, DSF Onyeukwu Chioma, who explained that having fire extinguishers is not enough; they must be placed where they can be easily seen and quickly reached during an emergency.

She advised that fire extinguishers should be:

* Kept in visible and accessible locations
* Placed near exits and along escape routes
* Located close to areas where fires are likely to start, such as kitchens and electrical points
* Properly mounted and free from obstruction

She also reminded the public that correct placement helps people respond faster and can prevent fire outbreaks from spreading.

The Command encouraged residents to always maintain their fire extinguishers and act quickly in case of fire.

The Federal Fire Service Imo State Command has received a donation of fourteen (14) FM200 fire suppressant cylinders from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Imo State branch, conveyed through an official letter of donation.

The State Controller, Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command, DCF Elozieuwa Felix, expressed profound appreciation to the Branch Controller Mr Ndukwe Chukwu for the generous contribution, describing it as a significant boost to the Service’s firefighting capacity.

He noted that the FM200 fire suppressant cylinders will greatly enhance the Command’s ability to effectively respond to fire emergencies, particularly in sensitive environments where clean agent systems are required.
