Strengthening Partnerships, Expanding Access: HHMC & IMSHIA Meet to Advance Healthcare Delivery in Imo

Tuesday, 2nd June 2026.

Today, the Heartland Hospital Management Corporation (HHMC) and the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA) held a strategic meeting to deepen collaboration for Universal Health Coverage in Imo State.

The HHMC Team led by the Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri was warmly welcomed by the IMSHIA Team led by Executive Secretary/CEO, Prof. Uchenna Ewelike, as the meeting focused on implementation policies to ensure that over 1.4 million IMSHIA enrollees access services in HHMC-managed facilities without disruption, provider payment systems are strengthened for faster, transparent claims processing, hospital infrastructure and equipment are aligned with insurance standards ahead of Imo’s new Robotic Surgery & AI Healthcare Centre, coordinated oversight is established to ensure quality service delivery and beneficiary satisfaction

The meeting builds on the landmark March 2026 agreement that placed Imo-owned hospitals under HHMC management - a core component of His Excellency Governor Hope Uzodimma’s health sector reform.

While speaking, Dr. Ogueri stated the commission's commitment to sustaining the momentum of transformation in Imo’s healthcare sector through teamwork and innovation.

While responding, Prof. Ewelike re-emphasized on the agency's goal - "every Imolite must have access to quality healthcare without financial hardship."

By aligning modern hospital management with expanded health insurance coverage, Imo is setting a clear path toward quality, affordable healthcare for all.

The data is clear without ambiguity, truly data don’t lie. The vision bearer is super committed, he is breaking records consistently. He once said it is better to use Imo money to build a new Imo where access to healthcare will not be hindered by health poverty irrespective of your socioeconomic class and location . His name is Hope Odidika Uzodimma. His Imo is now a model for best practices in Nigeria. National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2024 has spoken.

May Imo continue to win.

“God bless my Governor is not a small prayer from a vulnerable person."
This is where Governor Hope Uzodimma is different, strict implementation of a social welfare program that targets the weakest in the society.
This is leadership and governance defined. No woman should die giving birth because of health poverty in Imo. God bless our Governor truly!!!!

“Diaspora Health Mission Takes Off: Owerri Family Union USA Flags Off ImoCare Enrollment of 1,000 Beneficiaries Across Owerri”

On Monday 20th April 2025, the Owerri Family Union, USA flagged off the enrollment of 1,000 beneficiaries into the ImoCare Health Insurance Program during its Medical Mission across the three LGAs in Owerri.

The landmark event was graced by the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Mrs. Chioma Egu, alongside the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA), Prof. Uchenna Ewelike, and other Members of the Imo Health Team.

The flag-off signals a practical step by the diaspora to shield vulnerable families from catastrophic health spending. Beneficiaries enrolled during the mission will access maternal care, emergency services, surgeries, and essential drugs at little to no cost at the point of care under ImoCare.

Prof. Ewelike described the intervention as “diaspora partnership at its finest — directly converting goodwill into health security for our people,” while commending the Union for aligning with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Universal Health Coverage vision and strengthening preventive and curative care at the grassroots.

The Owerri Family Union USA reaffirmed its resolve to sustain support for health equity, noting that the Medical Mission is only the first phase of broader community health interventions planned for Imo State.

“Cervical Cancer Prevention Drive: Direct Consulting & Logistics, IMSHIA Partner to Boost HPV Vaccine Uptake in Imo”

The Technical Team from Direct Consulting & Logistics, led by Dr. Bestdone Gilbert, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA), Prof. Uchenna Ewelike, to advocate for increased uptake of the HPV vaccine across Imo State.

The engagement focused on three fronts: strengthening collaboration, driving awareness, and accelerating action toward the elimination of cervical cancer in Imo. Both teams discussed leveraging IMSHIA’s enrollee base and community networks to scale access and uptake of the lifesaving vaccine, especially among eligible girls.

This critical initiative is funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC), with support from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and WAVA.

Prof. Ewelike affirmed IMSHIA’s commitment to integrate preventive services like HPV vaccination into its health security mandate, noting that “protecting Imo families from future health and financial burdens starts with vaccines today.”

Dr. Gilbert commended IMSHIA’s leadership and data-driven approach, describing the Agency as “a strategic gateway to reach households at scale and ensure no girl is left behind.”

One visit. One shared goal: Zero cervical cancer deaths in Imo.

“Strategic Diaspora Alliance: Owerri Family Union USA, IMSHIA Move to Shield 1,000 Imo Indigenes Under ImoCare”

The Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA), ably led by Executive Secretary/CEO Prof. Uchenna Ewelike, welcomed Prof. Okey Igbonagwam, representative of the Owerri Family Union USA, to the Agency’s headquarters in Owerri.

The high-level engagement signals the Union’s resolve to enroll 1,000 vulnerable Imo beneficiaries into the ImoCare Health Insurance Program — a key pillar of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Universal Health Coverage drive.

By targeting maternal care, emergency services, and essential surgeries, this diaspora-backed enrollment directly tackles out-of-pocket health spending that pushes families into poverty.

Under Prof. Ewelike’s stewardship, IMSHIA has grown ImoCare enrollment to 2.7 million residents within two and a half years. The scheme has so far facilitated over 437,000 medical cases, including 20,000+ cesarean sections, while expanding access for civil servants, pensioners, and the informal sector.

Prof. Ewelike lauded the Owerri Family Union USA for “demonstrating practical love for home through health security,” stressing that such partnerships fast-track Imo State’s march toward health equity and financial protection for all.

1,000 new beneficiaries. One vision. Health for all.
