PUBLIC NOTICE

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PORTIONS OF THE CALABAR–ITU–IKOT EKPENE ROAD DUE TO ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

The Akwa Ibom State Government wishes to inform the general public that portions of the Calabar–Itu–Ikot Ekpene Road, spanning Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, will be temporarily closed by the Federal Ministry of Works for a period of two (2) weeks, effective Thursday, January 15, 2026.

This closure is necessitated by ongoing dualisation and construction works being carried out under authorization code C/NO 6669.

In view of this development, an alternative route — Ekim Itam–Uyo–Ikot Ekpene Road — has been opened for public use throughout the two-week period, commencing Friday, January 16, 2026.

The Government regrets any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause to motorists and other road users, and assures the public that the project is being undertaken for the overall benefit of the people upon completion.

The cooperation of all transporters, road users, and the general public is highly appreciated.

PRESS STATEMENT

Akwa Ibom ALGON Dismisses False Report on Alleged Rejection of Federal Allocation

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has dismissed as false and malicious a report published by The Crest Newspaper alleging that Local Government Chairmen rejected “pilfered” federal allocation. ALGON states clearly that no such incident occurred, and the report is a misrepresentation of facts aimed at misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension.

For the avoidance of doubt, no Local Government Chairman in Akwa Ibom State rejected any federal allocation. Indeed, the suggestion that Chairmen would dare a Governor who has consistently demonstrated strong support for the local government system is unfounded and illogical.

On the contrary, following a shortfall in the federal allocation, the Akwa Ibom State Government promptly intervened by providing grants to local governments to cushion the impact and ensure smooth administration at the grassroots.

ALGON further affirms that local government administrations across the state are up to date in the payment of salaries and statutory entitlements, including the payment of the 13th month salary to workers in December. This reflects the commitment of both the local governments and the supportive role of the state government in prioritising workers’ welfare.

It is also important to place on record that His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, assisted in the payment of backlog gratuities owed to local government retirees, particularly in view of the shortfall in the November federal allocation shared in December and ALGON appreciates His Excellency for his benevolence in that regard.

ALGON emphasizes that the Akwa Ibom State Government has consistently augmented local government allocations whenever there is a shortfall, a long-standing practice that predates the current administration of Pastor Umo Eno, PhD.

ALGON therefore urges the media to uphold professionalism, verify facts, and refrain from sensational reporting capable of undermining public confidence. The Association remains committed to transparent governance and continued collaboration with the state government for the development of Akwa Ibom State.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has used a youth led rally in Uyo to highlight new policy commitments and expanded social investments, as organised youth groups publicly aligned with the current national and state leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

The gathering, convened by Akwa Ibom Youths United on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, brought together thousands of young people from across the state, providing a platform for the Governor to outline fresh initiatives aimed at skills development, education support, and greater youth participation in governance.

Addressing the crowd, Governor Eno expressed appreciation for the mobilisation of young people and said his administration viewed youth inclusion as a practical development priority rather than a political slogan. He announced that 100 youths from each local government area would be enrolled for vocational and technical training at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, noting that workforce readiness and entrepreneurship were central to the state’s long term economic plans.

The Governor also revealed that bursary payments for Akwa Ibom students in tertiary institutions have been increased to fifty thousand naira, while plans are underway to establish accessible youth centres in all local government areas. According to him, these measures form part of a broader framework to be captured in a comprehensive Youth Policy that the state government intends to develop and implement.

The event followed a large scale road walk by participants, which commenced at Ibom Hall along IBB Avenue and moved through major routes in the state capital before ending at the Globe Roundabout. Youths from the three senatorial districts participated, carrying placards and chanting songs in support of continued leadership at both state and national levels.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Youth Development and member representing Oron Federal Constituency, Honourable Martin Esin, said the rally reflected growing confidence among young Nigerians in recent governance reforms. He pointed to fiscal and economic changes under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he said had improved revenues available to states and local government councils.

During the programme, a motion was formally presented and adopted endorsing President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno for the 2027 elections. Organisers described the endorsement as an expression of trust in leadership performance rather than a routine political exercise.

Observers noted the size and coordination of the rally, interpreting it as a signal of increasing youth engagement in policy discussions and future electoral choices within Akwa Ibom State.
