SDGs CDS Group Outreach on Education and Sensitization of Secondary Schools in Nsukka on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (May 2025)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Community Development Service (CDS) Group, under the leadership of the President, Joshua Emmanuel Okon, organized an impactful outreach program on Wednesday, 21st of May 2025. The event took place at Urban Boys Secondary School Nsukka, with the primary aim of promoting awareness and understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals among students and school authorities.
Background and Objectives
In alignment with the global 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), our outreach focused on educating young minds about the SDGs and encouraging active involvement in achieving these goals within their local communities.
Objectives:
Our key objectives for the outreach were as follows:
To introduce and explain the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to secondary school students in simple and relatable terms.
To inspire students to take initiative and become young ambassadors for sustainable development.
To foster collaboration between schools and the SDGs CDS Group for future advocacy and development programs.
Activities Carried Out
a. Interactive Classroom Sessions:
We engaged students in informative and interactive classroom sessions where we broke down each of the 17 goals, highlighting how they relate to their everyday lives and future aspirations. Special emphasis was placed on SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
b. Group Discussions and Q&A Segments:
Students participated in group discussions, where they shared ideas and asked questions about global challenges and the role of youth in sustainable development. These conversations enhanced their critical thinking and awareness of global citizenship.
c. Distribution of Educational Materials:
We distributed SDG-themed flyers and simplified charts to aid learning and provide long-term reference for both students and teachers.
d. Engagement with School Authorities:
We held brief meetings with principals and teachers to encourage the integration of SDG concepts into extracurricular activities and school club initiatives.
In conclusion, our CDS group strongly believes that meaningful development begins with education. The outreach program revealed a high level of interest and willingness among students to learn about and contribute to sustainable development efforts.
With collective action and continuous sensitization, we can raise a generation that is informed, empowered, and committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
