PRESS RELEASE
Benue State Urban Development Board Undertakes Strategic Demolition Exercise in Makurdi Metropolis
August 1, 2025
The Benue State Urban Development Board, under the dynamic leadership of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, today, August 1, 2025, conducted a targeted demolition exercise within Makurdi Metropolis to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations and enhance public safety. This action underscores the Governor’s unwavering commitment to creating a safe, organized, and sustainable urban environment by addressing encroachments on highways and public rights-of-way.
The demolition exercise focused on structures illegally extending onto roads in the following areas:
1. Titogate T Junction
2. Konshisha Street, Low Level
3. Iorchia Ayu Road, close to City Bay
4. Jillah Ase, opposite D-Division, Makurdi
5. Directly opposite Total Filling Station, Ibrahim Kashim Way
Prior to the exercise, affected property owners were duly notified and given ample time to comply with the Board’s directives. The removal of these structures aligns with the state government’s vision to decongest highways, improve traffic flow, and safeguard lives and property.
His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, remains resolute in his mission to transform Benue State into a model of urban excellence. The administration is committed to enforcing urban development policies that prioritize public welfare while fostering sustainable growth. This exercise is part of a broader initiative to reclaim public spaces, prevent haphazard construction, and ensure that highways remain accessible and safe for all citizens.
The Benue State Urban Development Board, led by General Manager TPL Ternongo Mede, calls on residents and property owners to adhere to approved building plans and respect designated setbacks. The Board will continue to monitor compliance and take necessary actions to uphold urban planning standards across the state.
