UNICEF Nigeria, in partnership with the Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board and other development partners, has officially flagged off the distribution of 3,700 Mama Kits to pregnant women across 13 priority LGAs under the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII).

These kits which contain essential supplies for clean and safe childbirth are a lifeline for women in one of Nigeria’s hardest-hit regions for maternal and neonatal mortality.

As UNICEF’s Maiduguri Field Chief, Francis Busiku, emphasized: “No woman should die giving life. Every newborn deserves the chance to thrive.”

By mobilizing government agencies, traditional leaders, civil society, and partners to join the effort, Borno’s mothers and newborns are receiving an invaluable boost toward safer, healthier futures.

From July 15 to 16, 2025, the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC), in collaboration with Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board and partners, held a two-day orientation for LGA Technical Assistants (TAs) in Borno State on microplanning for the 2025 Integrated Measles-Rubella (MR) Campaign. The first day focused on building foundational knowledge, including an overview of IVAC’s structure, the upcoming MR/Polio Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs), and the epidemiology of measles, rubella, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases in Nigeria. Participants were introduced to the microplanning process step-by-step, Daily Implementation Plans (DIP), and the use of GIS maps for ward-level planning, with support from WHO, UNICEF, CHAI, Solina, and AFENET. The second day was highly practical, with LGA teams engaging in hands-on group work to populate microplanning and DIP templates, present their outputs, and receive feedback. Additional sessions covered data verification, reporting templates, and the Terms of Reference (ToR) for LGA TAs, followed by administrative briefings and post-training evaluations. The orientation strengthened the capacity of LGA TAs to support accurate, community-level microplanning and effective implementation for the upcoming 2025 MR Campaign.
