The Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Prof. Usman Tar, visited the Borno State Council for Arts and Culture today to commend Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his immense support to revive the state's cultural heritage.

In a statement, Prof. Tar said that Governor Zulum has been a great supporter of the council's efforts to promote traditional arts and crafts, as well as tourism.
We are grateful to Governor Zulum for his support," Prof. Tar said. "His support has made it possible for us to make significant progress in reviving our cultural heritage."

Prof. Tar said that the council is working on a number of projects to promote Borno State's rich cultural heritage, including:

• A museum to showcase the state's traditional arts and crafts

• A cultural center to host performances and events

• A tourism development plan to attract more visitors to the state

"We are confident that with Governor Zulum's support, we will be able to make Borno State a major destination for tourists from all over the world," Prof. Tar said.

Kazagi is a traditional percussion instrument that originated in Africa, particularly in the West African countries of Senegal and Mali. Also known as the talking drum, it is an essential part of the culture and music of the region. With its unique ability to mimic the tonal patterns of human speech, the kalangu has been used for generations to communicate across long distances.

Made from a hollowed-out log or wooden cylinder, the kalangu is covered with animal skin on both ends, usually cow or goat skin. It is held under the arm or tucked under the player's side, with one hand holding the drum and the other hand striking the skin with a curved stick or mallet. By applying different pressures and using various techniques, the player can produce a wide range of tones and rhythms, making the kalangu a versatile and expressive instrument.

The talking drum gets its name from the way its pitch can be modulated to imitate the rhythmic patterns and inflections of human speech. Abdulrazaq, popularly known as Audu Malo, is a name synonymous with traditional drumming in Nigeria. Hailing from Katsina state, Audu Malo began his career as a drummer at an early age. His passion for drumming and his natural talent quickly caught the attention of Salisu Ibrahim Mashi, also known as Kakis, who recognized his potential and took him under his wing.

Under the mentorship of Kakis, Audu Malo's skills flourished, and he was given the opportunity to join the renowned Damaga Group of Drums and Music. This group, headed by Audu Haro Mashi, was well-respected in the traditional drumming community and provided Audu Malo with a platform to showcase his talent to a wider audience.

Audu Malo's exceptional talent did not go unnoticed, and he soon began receiving numerous accolades and awards. One of the most notable achievements in his career was winning the prestigious German Traditional African Drummers Award, brought by the esteemed construction company Julius Berger. This recognition not only celebrated his skill as a drummer but also brought his unique style of music and drumming to an international audience.

In addition to the German award, Audu Malo was also honored as the Best Drummer at the Congo Brazzaville Festival of Arts and Music. This recognition further established his reputation as a talented and respected artist. Closer to home, he received the award for Best Drummer of the Year at the Chogom Festival, showcasing his versatility and mastery of different drumming styles.

What sets Audu Malo apart from others in his field is his ability to seamlessly blend various drumming styles into his performances. Whether it is the energetic rhythms of Koroso, Achiya, Senigambiya, Mardo, Atelegwu, Swage, Bata, or any other style, Audu Malo effortlessly incorporates them into his repertoire.
