these roses are blooming
cos I've watered each with
the deepest desire to wait
patiently for you, my Ajoke
see! i water them every
morn' as i wake to
the soothing serenades
of the birds' morning
devotional hymns
o' how fantastic!
see! it is good to be loved
better even to love and for
your love I've fallen lost
in the very depth of you
so i shall wait for you
while the blooms of these
roses bear me assurances
that we shall be together,
forever someday, however
long or short it may take...

amidst the storm
of hunger and starvation
the sick children and lost youth
the world prepares for war
build arms with tons of
currency
the wails are ignored
the world's heart is now
coated with bricks
the world's ears is now
laced with cotton wool
yes! the world should
prepare for war but not
with guns and bullets
but with love and kindness
for who fights war when
the soldiers are kwashiokored?
who fights war when
hunger and disease
have turned every street
into a cemetery?

Ajoke!
rise...rise from this dust
where Abike knew
her last breath
rise like the flames from
fierce camp fires
rise like the skyscrapers
wearing the streets
of Dubai majestic draperies
rise like the sun
rise like the sunflowers
on spring mornings
rise above everything high
rise even above the sky
for Ajoke! you've won
my heart in the battle
where two became one
rise Ajoke! for you are
my woman; the symbol
of love that will never
wear out or fade
rise Ajoke! for you have
become the crown and I;
the king...

just four moons ago
they came brandishing
hope in the market place
where we stood with
swollen eyes bearing
in our palms ruins of wares
destroyed by the cruel
hands of Haram Bokos
so in the haste of fresh
breath, we took up arms
and went to war to
dethrone our king for another
how could we have known
that this one came with
a train full of blames
and dumbness; nothing more
how could we have known
the lyrics of change
sounded so sweet
in our hysteria we didn't
hear the hidden tunes
that wailed: "change of chains.. chains of change"
how could we have known
it was a vacuum of empty words
we just bought and took home
for does a man whose house
is on fire bother where the water
used to save the house from
falling into ruins come from?
so in our excitement
we plunged headward in
exposing our bottom
to flies of suffering
now nothing has changed
positively only new degrees
of suffering, a new
dimensions to pain
teary eyed and gnashing teeth
we sit at the corner
of the market place
to mourn our fooly
they've come this time
with next level
wailed it louder than before
they've even rented
a crowd of lunatics
to help telegraph
their lame promises
so all ear may hear
as we sit nursing our
kwashiokored stomachs
yet, listening better
i hear in slow tunes
these words enmeshed
in hypocritical smiles:
"next level of pains
far worst than the
chain of change we gave"
so let's run, brother, let's run
for it's once bitten twice shy...

words for blades
lines for shreds
threads for threats
the world is falling apart
Achebe was right
for things fall apart here
keeps falling apart
we must find new
ways to sing dirges
as these cursed men
find new ways to
sow deaths
see! our president
suffers dementia
he doesn't seem
to know anything
he doesn't know this
he doesn't know that
perfect excuses
like we voted him
to go sit,eat and forget
we suffer insomnia
many sleepless nights
when fools fill the
table meant for wisdom
& the wise
we must learn new ways
to sing dirges
since blades & their weilders
have learnt new ways
to slit throats.kill joy.
bring tears
we must learn new
ways to cry
do not blame it on
anyone senselessness
he may sit there & forget
let him forget that the land
smells like roasted goat meat
let him forget that
human flesh
now make better meat
for Abokis' suya
than cow meat did
such great discovery
let him forget
that hunger now knows
the lil corners we hide
our breath- he plays
with it now & may soon
snap the wrong cord
then everything will
crumble down to silence
ghost silence.dead
we sang this song
just few years ago
we made this choice
we sang: Sai Baba...
today we must keep
reminding him cos
sometimes he forgets
he is even the president
hahahahahahaha
poor old man
let the bokos,the herdsmen,
the babbarians & many other
psychiatric patients take
their fill of blood
their brother is president
so he can sit there & forget
while the locusts eat up
the land
ashes & dust will always
remain to tell the last
tale when bones & fleshes
lose their voices.
oh!!! sh*t,this is another hate
speech.I am doomed to be
the enemy of the state...

let there be a new sun
to wipe this rain of tears
the pelting storm,the heart rending
turbulence beats hard against
the door of our ears
threatening to tear our sanity
in bits like pieces of paper
" how did we get here?"
we ask 'midst the tears
as cracked lips birth blood
& raw hunger
for this house is on commotion
each part teaming up against
the other.we were born into
this hatred many moons ago
like we were born into the darkness
of our many failings
so let a new sun arise
to lick dry the tears
maybe we may find hope
in her golden ray like sunshine
after a persistent rain...

ife mi!
ore mi!
i know love has done
us just unfair
i know i broke
those promises
i made you
we promised forever
but, we let us fall apart
i know i was wrong
for walking away
but,ibere tun tun
ibere tun tun
we could start afresh
i know there is a part
of you that still yearns
for me
there is a part of me
that still sees you as home
so ibere tun tun
ibere tun tun
let's just start
all over again
i will woo you
just the same way
i did before we fell apart
you will test me
just the same
for ibere tun tun
ibere tun tun
if only we try
we can make
a new beginning
never to part again
we can make
a new beginning
never to go away...

let's coin curls like snakes
from the beating heart
of god & make breathes
from things that sound
like cymbals
maybe we should shade shells
maybe beaks.claws.feathers
like old eagles do
or we could just shade our skins
step out of dead skins like snakes
walk free.born again.new.afresh
maybe we should find zephyr on
the chest of luring nights
maybe we should just learn
to live again;phoenix
after every death
so when cruel life burns us to ashes.dust
we will find essence to rise again
maybe we should die to things
that stifle us so we could be
born from its ashes to
embrace things that hand us
freedom like erotic poems do...

Inemesit!
my happiness!
i have traveled far and wide
i have lived in many places
i have learnt from scribes.
teachers. nature
i have come to know
that home is not a place
not a city nor a county
home is not something
you can see or touch
home is not made of bricks
that grows archiac and collapses
conquered by age and time
home is not a garden where
lovers meet to mate
for even gardens clothed
in their blooming apparels of roses.cactuses.
sunflowers.
lilies to mention just a few
wither and fade away
i think home is a feeling
something in the heart
something that beats in me
when your lips curves to form
tender smiles
home is what i feel each time
i look straight into your inviting eyes
even your tears,my inemesit speaks
of home
home is this man you've made
me become
home is how i long to get closer
to you each day
home is the sweet stories
we share
home is your naughtiness
and my stubborness: you make
me a man this way
home is this tomorrow; a blisful
tomorrow i see when i think of you
home is how each vein rises
in salutation when i hold your hands
home is this electric current
that lights my whole body
when i kiss your lips
home is everything that i have
become cos of you
home is all i wish to do
to keep you happy
home is this happiness
that will never with you fade
you are my home,Inemesit
i carry you in the case of my heart
everywhere i go...

Abike!
can you remember
it was on the heel
of this hill that our first
young petal of love unfurled?
can you remember how
we wove our desires into poetry
till even time stood still
to eavesdrop on the tale
of two lovers; inseparable?
can you remember how
we walked endless nights
under the jealous cover
of dark clouds with stars
and the moon trailing us
to where i planted my first
love kiss on your luscious lips under that mahogany tree
close to the village towncrier's
rickety hut?
can you remember endless
days of longing.sleepless
nights of mourning for
the absence of each other's
warm embrace in cold nights?
can you remember
how our names became okro
in the mouth of the village wagging tongues and how we cared less
how we cared about nothing 'xept the two of us; together ?
see! we were two against the world
since love doesn't die
i just came to let you know
that my love is like the phoenix
it only dies to be born again
fresher and newer
i just came to let you know
that some day i will come back
for the warmth of your arms
for i am just gone for awhile
to seek greener pastures
so i can make you that kingdom
i promised where you will be
my Queen and i, your King be
just wait for me,
will you?

sitting at the edge
of the dying old
awaiting the birth of the new
we break memory
into meats of remembrance
as our mind weaves and sieves
through those moments
that made 365
we remember how our bones
wobbled through slimy murks
and sparkling boulevards
the heart breaking tears
and ribs cracking laughters
the falls.the rises
those moments when life
became like rubbles of war
then dreams held us up
like a pendulum
see! we learnt lessons:
bitter and sweet alike
we fell in love
and fell out of love
yet, we grew like wild roses
in the jungle watered with dew
we resolve to walk the walk
through the new with all it
will take
we don't expect calm
but, we are ready to ride the waves
to turn storms into pillows
and billows into beds
we are ready to sail the turbulence
we are ready to be men
we are ready to turn afflictions
to testimonies
we are ready to live. love. grow. become. survive. conquer. own...
