*THINGS TO NOTE BEFORE ACCEPTING YOUR PRIMARY PLACE OF ASSIGNMENT(PPA)*
This is a warning to all new corps members who want to have peace of mind and enjoy the next 11 months of their NYSC service at their different Places of Primary Assignment (PPA). Many people take advantage of corps members to achieve their companies' end goals. To avoid being exploited, read this carefully.
*What It's Like to Be a New Corps Member*
New corps members are often too anxious to get to their PPA and get accepted so they can return home quickly. It's normal to feel this way, especially after waiting for the camp to start. However, it's essential to take your time and consider your options carefully.
*7 Things to Know Before Accepting Your PPA*
*1. Don't Be Too Anxious*
Don't rush into accepting any PPA without considering the implications. Take your time, and don't be too anxious to get a PPA that might not be suitable for you.
*2. Good Accommodation*
Most PPAs do not provide conducive accommodation for corps members due to various reasons. You might need to find your own accommodation, considering factors like privacy, electricity, network, location, and environment.
*3. Your Free Day Must Be Respected*
You have the privilege of a day off every week, usually your CDS day. Your PPA must respect this day, and you shouldn't be expected to work on it.
*4. Local Allowance*
Your PPA should pay you a local allowance, which can vary depending on the organization. Ensure that the allowance is agreed upon and paid regularly. You can negotiate for a reasonable amount, considering the cost of living.
*5. Workload*
Don't let your PPA overwork you. If you're in a school, you're not expected to teach more than two subjects. However, you can take on more if you're willing and able.
*6. Gather Information*
Gather information from existing corps members and workers in the organization to know how the management treats their workers. This will help you determine if they'll keep their promises to you.
7. Rules and Regulations
Some PPAs have specific rules that you might not be comfortable with. Find out if there are any unusual rules or expectations, such as dress code or visitor restrictions. If you're not comfortable with the rules, it's better to discuss them before accepting the PPA.
By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision about your PPA and ensure a smooth NYSC experience.
