Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea (“stomach flu,” though it is not related to influenza).
Common symptoms
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Watery diarrhea
* Stomach cramps
* Sometimes fever, headache, body aches
Symptoms usually start 12–48 hours after exposure and last about 1–3 days.
How it spreads
Norovirus spreads through:
* Contaminated food or water
* Touching contaminated surfaces
* Close contact with infected people
It spreads very easily in places like schools, cruise ships, nursing homes, and restaurants.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment. Main treatment is:
* Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
* Oral rehydration solutions can help
* Rest
* Eat bland foods as tolerated
Seek medical care if there are signs of severe dehydration:
* Dizziness
* Very dry mouth
* Little or no urination
* Confusion
* Blood in stool
* Symptoms lasting more than a few days
Prevention
* Wash hands well with soap and water
* Disinfect contaminated surfaces with bleach-based cleaners
* Wash fruits/vegetables thoroughly
* Avoid preparing food for others while sick and for 48 hours after symptoms stop
People can still spread the virus even after feeling better.
