Alhaji Umar Kalgo’s Impactful Activities in Two Months as NAHCON Kano Zonal Coordinator.

By Muhammad T. Shehu
10 November, 2025

When Alhaji Umar Kalgo assumed office as the NAHCON Kano Zonal Coordinator just two months ago, few anticipated the pace and depth of transformation that would follow. In a remarkably short time, the office has undergone visible change, not just in its physical outlook, but also in spirit, structure, and efficiency.
Driven by vision and a sense of purpose, the new Coordinator has introduced initiatives that enhanced staff productivity, environmental sustainability, gender inclusivity, and digital modernization, setting a new standard for what leadership can achieve in a short span.
Below is a detailed account of the outstanding achievements recorded within this brief period:

i. Provision of a Reliable Water Source

The first sign of change came quietly but powerfully a consistent supply of clean water. For years, the lack of reliable water had been a lingering challenge for staff and visitors alike. Within weeks, a sustainable water source was founded. The difference was immediate: improved hygiene, greater convenience, and a collective sigh of relief across the office.
This initiative improved daily operations and boosted morale by addressing a fundamental workplace necessity. The swift action in resolving this long-standing issue reflects a commitment to creating a conducive and healthy work environment. It was a small victory, but one that spoke volumes about priorities leadership that listens, acts, and delivers.

ii. Tree-Planting Initiative for a Greener Office

Soon after, the grounds of the Kano Zonal Office began to bloom. A tree-planting campaign took root, transforming open spaces into green pockets of calm. The initiative, beyond beautification, reflected a forward-thinking approach to sustainability, creating serene shade, purifying the air, and fostering a sense of pride in the shared workspace.
This effort aligns with global sustainability goals and underscores the office’s dedication to long-term environmental responsibility. It’s a reminder that growth both literal and organizational begins with planting something that lasts.

iii. Allocation of an Additional Restroom for Female Staff

One of the most celebrated reforms came in the form of an additional restroom dedicated to female staff, a thoughtful gesture that resonated deeply. The initiative addressed a long-overlooked need, promoting comfort and dignity for women in the workplace.
This action promotes privacy, equity, and inclusivity, reinforcing NAHCON’s commitment to gender equality. It also sent a broader message: inclusivity isn’t a slogan; it’s a policy in action.

iv. Introduction of Office Tags

Sometimes, transformation begins with the smallest details. The introduction of official office tags for all staff may seem minor, but it has significantly enhanced professionalism and unity. The tags have improved security, strengthened accountability, and elevated the office’s image.
From visitors to team members, everyone now recognizes a shared identity, a reflection of discipline, pride, and teamwork. Professional identity has truly been reinforced.

v. Allocation of Offices to All Zonal Staff

Acknowledging the importance of conducive workspaces for productivity, the office reorganization brought another wave of relief. Each staff member now has a dedicated workspace, eliminating overcrowding and improving workflow.
The new structure has not only enhanced productivity but also instilled a sense of ownership and belonging. For many, it was the first time they could truly call their space their own.

vi. Establishment of an ICT Office for Digital Transformation

As part of a bold and decisive move toward modernization, the Coordinator established a dedicated ICT office to drive the digital transformation of zonal operations.
This forward-thinking initiative marked the beginning of NAHCON Kano’s digital reforms, introducing smarter systems for data management and communication. The step positions the office for greater transparency, efficiency, and adaptability in an increasingly digital administrative landscape. The zonal office is now better equipped to meet contemporary demands through innovation and technology.

vii. Strategic Meeting With NAHCON Chairman/CEO and Zonal Staff

Capping off the two-month milestone, the Zonal Office hosted the NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, for a strategic meeting with staff. The engagement fostered dialogue, strengthened collaboration, and deepened alignment between the Kano Zone and the Commission’s national vision reaffirming the zone’s readiness to lead by example.

A Legacy of Impact in Just Two Months

In just two months, the story of NAHCON’s Kano Zonal Office has become one of renewal and purpose. Through decisive leadership and inclusive action, the office has evolved into a model of efficiency, sustainability, and teamwork.
From ensuring essential amenities and promoting inclusivity to embracing environmental sustainability and digital innovation, the Kano Zonal Office has been transformed into a model of modernity and progress.
These initiatives have not only improved the operational landscape but also inspired staff to embrace a collective vision of growth and service.
If the past eight weeks are any indication, this new chapter of leadership is only just beginning and, its legacy will continue to grow, much like the trees now taking root outside its walls.
