POWER COMMISSIONER HOSTS CITAD DELEGATION, PUSHES FOR STATE ELECTRICITY MARKET

The Honourable Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Kano State, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, received a delegation from the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) at the Ministry’s headquarters.

While addressing the delegation, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu explained that the Ministry is partnering with private investors, independent power producers, and international development agencies to build mini-grids and captive power systems for key economic zones and emerging tech clusters.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to achieve the Kano State Government’s vision of reliable and sustainable energy under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The meeting focused on reviewing key improvements in the power sector, acknowledging existing achievements, identifying challenges, and exploring practical solutions to enhance electricity supply and renewable energy deployment across the state.

Discussions covered priority areas including infrastructure upgrades, technical capacity building, maintenance bottlenecks, and strategies for fast-tracking renewable energy projects to support communities and businesses.

The Commissioner assured CITAD of the Ministry’s open-door policy and readiness to work jointly on actionable steps that will translate into improved service delivery for residents.

Earlier, the leader of the CITAD delegation, Malam Isa Garba, said they were at the Ministry to collaborate on tools and civic engagement activities.

He noted that Kano, as a major commercial center, cannot afford to be left behind in the move to establish a State Electricity Regulatory Commission, given its importance to citizens.

Isa Garba disclosed that small businesses in the state spend up to 40% of their operating costs on alternative power, while young innovators are unable to run digital enterprises consistently due to poor supply.

He proposed that Kano can set up a state-owned electricity market or special purpose company to generate embedded power from solar, gas, and waste-to-energy, and distribute to industrial clusters like Sharada, Bompai, Chalawa, and underserved communities.

The CITAD leader commended the Ministry’s efforts and pledged continued partnership to support the state’s power sector reforms.
