The Kano State Government wishes to inform the general public that there may be temporary disruptions in water supply across parts of Kano Metropolis today due to a power outage affecting the Challawa Water Treatment Plant.

The outage is a result of ongoing repair works by KEDCO on the Challawa power line, while the plant’s standby generators are also undergoing repairs.

Kano State has reinforced its position as a leader in subnational climate governance following a strategic departmental meeting of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

A key highlight was the State’s intensified support for Nigeria’s Second Biennial Transparency Report (BTR2) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Ongoing collaboration with sectoral MDAs across Energy, AFOLU, Waste, and Industrial Processes is ensuring credible, harmonized greenhouse gas emissions data in line with the Paris Agreement transparency requirements.

In a major milestone, Kano has been selected as one of three pilot states under the UK PACT programme to develop a Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system. The initiative will institutionalize structured emissions reporting, strengthen accountability, and support tracking of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The Ministry has also commenced preparations for the 3rd Edition of the Climate Governance Performance Ranking to enhance methodological rigor, peer learning, transparency, and stakeholder engagement.

Further consolidating Kano’s leadership, the Honorable Commissioner for Environment has been appointed Regional Lead (North West) of the Community of Practice for Environment and Climate Change, strengthening regional collaboration and policy coordination.

The Ministry remains committed to strengthening institutional systems, enhancing emissions transparency, and advancing coordinated climate action across Nigeria.

Signed:
Dr. Umar Saleh Anka
Director, Climate Change

Today, with the support of the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE), we successfully held the validation session for the Kano State Climate Finance Reform Action and Implementation Plan (2025–2028).

The session brought together key MDAs, CSOs and Media, Their collective contributions ensured that the reform actions, responsibilities, and timelines reflect the State’s priorities, institutional realities, and climate governance aspirations.

This Plan marks an important step in strengthening Kano State’s readiness to access and effectively manage climate finance, improve coordination, and build a bankable portfolio of climate investment projects.

We appreciate PACE for the continuous technical support and all participating MDAs for their commitment to advancing climate finance reforms in Kano State.
