2 June 2026

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has commenced discussions with the University of Benin on the implementation of the Pathway for AI-Enabled Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PATH4AI POCUS) Project, an innovative initiative aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare services in Kano State.

The engagement follows an official introduction letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, by the project's Principal Investigator, Prof. Ehigha Enabudoso, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

The PATH4AI POCUS Project seeks to improve the early detection of high-risk pregnancies through the deployment of Artificial Intelligence-enabled ultrasound technology at primary healthcare facilities. The initiative is designed to generate evidence for the scale-up of point-of-care ultrasound services across Nigeria, ultimately improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Funded by the Gates Foundation, the project will run from 2026 to 2028 across Kano, Gombe, and Ogun States, in collaboration with technical partners, including the Nikao Support Initiative (NSI).

As part of the follow-up process, the Project Coordinator, Dr. Isah Musa Isah, paid an advocacy visit to KSCHMA on 2 June 2026. He was warmly received by the Executive Secretary, who commended the initiative and its potential to strengthen maternal healthcare delivery, particularly at the primary healthcare level.

Discussions focused on the project's implementation framework, expected outcomes, and opportunities for collaboration between KSCHMA, the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, and other stakeholders. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening antenatal care services, improving the early detection of pregnancy-related complications, and enhancing referral systems through innovative technology.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar reaffirmed KSCHMA's commitment to supporting evidence-based interventions that align with the healthcare transformation agenda of the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf. She noted that the initiative complements the administration's Kano First Agenda, which prioritizes accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for all residents.

The Executive Secretary further emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing Universal Health Coverage and improving health outcomes for women and children across Kano State.

KSCHMA remains committed to fostering collaborations that leverage innovation, technology, and research to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve the wellbeing of the people of Kano State.
