I have seen some people trying to push the narrative that the late Ahmadu Bello said the North should never trust the Igbos in any way. But honestly, if he were alive today and saw how some so-called northern leaders have impoverished their own people because of selfishness and personal interests, he might even support unity with the Igbos more than some Igbos themselves.
The Northerners during Sardauna’s time were not the same as many of the leaders we see today. Back then, Northerners were known for dignity, discipline, hospitality, and respect across every region in Nigeria. Sadly, the reverse is gradually becoming the reality today because of poor leadership and division. During Sardauna’s era, when you came to the North, there was hardly any difference in how Christians and Muslims related with one another. People lived with more tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect.
Compare that to what we see today, where religion and ethnicity are constantly used as tools to divide ordinary people for political gain. Those still trying to use fear and old propaganda against the Igbos should understand that many Northerners are no longer buying into it. Many people are now opening their eyes and asking serious questions about leadership, justice, unity, and the future of Nigeria.
And if the strongest reason some people can give for campaigning against an Igbo candidate is simply because he is Igbo, then that mindset has already failed woefully. Nigerians today are struggling with hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and economic difficulties. Most citizens are now more concerned about competence, integrity, and the ability to deliver good leadership than tribal politics. Ethnicity alone cannot solve Nigeria’s problems, and many people are beginning to realize that keeping Nigerians divided only benefits selfish politicians, not the ordinary masses. 🌍🔥✨💪
