INSECURITY IN NIGERIA: A CONCERN FOR ALL – SKYA
The Southern Kaduna Youth Assembly (SKYA) expresses deep concern over the worsening security challenges confronting Nigeria. The persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent criminality continue to endanger lives, disrupt livelihoods, and undermine national unity and development.
Recent events have once again highlighted the urgency of decisive and coordinated action.
THE OYO SCHOOL ABDUCTION AND RESCUE
On May 15, 2026, heavily armed bandits reportedly launched coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, resulting in the abduction of school children and staff. The incident was particularly alarming as it represented one of the first major mass school kidnappings recorded in Nigeria's South-West region, a criminal tactic previously associated mainly with other parts of the country.
We commend the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Joint Task Force (JTF), and the newly deployed forest guards for their successful rescue operation. Their efforts are appreciated, and we celebrate the safe return of the victims to their families and loved ones.
ABDUCTION OF MAJOR GENERAL RABE ABUBAKAR (Rtd.)
On May 30, 2026, reports emerged that Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd.), former Director of Defence Information, and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were abducted along the Karaduwa–Matazu Road in Katsina State.
This unfortunate incident raises serious concerns about the security situation in the country and underscores the reality that insecurity spares no one, regardless of status, profession, ethnicity, or religion.
REMEMBERING BRIGADIER GENERAL MUSA UBA
Nigeria also continues to mourn the loss of Brigadier General Musa Uba, who was reportedly ambushed and killed by ISWAP terrorists in Borno State in November 2025 while serving his nation.
We honour his sacrifice and pray that Almighty God grants him eternal rest while comforting his family, colleagues, and all who were affected by his passing.
A NATIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGE
The recurrent targeting of military personnel, retired officers, and civilians demonstrates the evolving nature of insecurity in Nigeria. From the North-East to the North-West and now extending into parts of the South-West, criminal networks continue to threaten peace and stability.
The abduction of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd.) is not merely an attack on an individual; it is a reminder that the nation's security challenges require urgent, innovative, and collective responses.
As citizens, we must recognize a simple truth:
"Evil knows no tribe, religion, class, or region."
When insecurity thrives, every Nigerian becomes vulnerable.
A CALL TO ACTION
We respectfully call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all relevant security institutions to intensify efforts toward ending terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the country.
Mr. President, if your administration succeeds in substantially reducing insecurity and guaranteeing the safety of lives and property, history will remember such achievement as one of the most significant legacies of your tenure.
We therefore suggest the convening of a high-level national security consultation involving:
* Serving military and security chiefs;
* Former military heads of state;
* Distinguished retired military officers;
* Intelligence experts;
* Security scholars;
* Community leaders; and
* Representatives of young people across the country.
Nigeria possesses a wealth of military and strategic experience. The collective wisdom of respected statesmen such as General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), General Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd.), General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd.), General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd.), and other accomplished retired military officers can complement ongoing efforts to address the nation's security challenges.
National security should transcend political affiliations. Every patriotic Nigerian who possesses valuable experience and insight should be encouraged to contribute to building a safer nation.
THE VOICE OF YOUNG PEOPLE
As young Nigerians, we may not possess military training, but we have a civic responsibility to contribute ideas, support peacebuilding efforts, and hold leaders accountable for delivering security and good governance.
This is not a call for promises; it is a call for decisive action.
We urge government at all levels to listen to the concerns of citizens, especially young people, and to act with urgency, courage, and determination.
Nigeria's future depends on our collective ability to defeat insecurity and create an environment where every citizen can live, work, learn, and thrive without fear.
