ATSTC INAUGURATES SECOND COHORT OF NAMA STUDENTS FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE RADAR COURSE

The Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), Kaduna, has inaugurated the second cohort of students from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) for the Air Traffic Control and Surveillance Radar Course (ACSR). This milestone, marked on Monday, 2 February 2026, comes just over a year after the Nigerian Air Force inaugurated the first group in October 2024, underscoring ATSTC’s sustained commitment to addressing the backlog of Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) trainees and strengthening Nigeria’s air navigation manpower.

The ceremony was graced by the representative of the Airspace Manager, Alhaji Abdulmajid Muhammed, who also serves as the Air Traffic Operations Manager at Hassan Usman Katsina International Airport. Distinguished instructors and resource persons from NAMA, the Acting Deputy Commandant, Principal Staff Officers and Deans of various schools at the Centre were also in attendance.

Presiding over the inauguration, the Commandant of ATSTC, Air Vice Marshal N. B. Folaji, reaffirmed the Centre’s dedication to collaborating with NAMA in building the capacity of future air traffic controllers. In his inaugural address, he expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the opportunity to witness another landmark event and emphasized the Centre’s mission to nurture the next generation of aviation professionals.

The Commandant charged cadets to be adaptable, resourceful and disciplined, stressing that success in the course would depend on effective time management, teamwork, confidence, strong work ethics and personal discipline. He encouraged students to engage instructors whenever in doubt, while also cultivating the self-discipline expected in a military institution.

Course highlights were presented by the Director General Academics, Squadron Leader B. B. Mukhtar, who explained that the programme is designed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge in air traffic management, from aerodrome operations to terminal radar control. Students will undertake 16 core subjects and 4 allied subjects, equipping them for future management roles, enhancing safety awareness and deepening their understanding of military air traffic control operations.

The course commenced on 26 January 2026 with administrative and logistical preparations and will run for 65 weeks, concluding on 30 July 2027. The programme includes classroom instruction, facility tours at selected airports across Nigeria’s North West region and the Federal Capital Territory, and rigorous assessments. Students are required to achieve a minimum pass mark of 75%, in line with international aviation training standards.
In closing, Air Vice Marshal Folaji declared the course open, wishing the students of ACSR 5 a fruitful and rewarding stay at ATSTC.

FAMILIARISATION VISIT OF THE COMMANDANT WARRANT OFFICERS ACADEMY NIGERIAN ARMY TO ATSTC
On Wednesday, 4 February 2026, the Commandant of the Warrant Officers Academy (WOA), Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A. Wende, conducted a familiarisation visit to the Headquarters Air Traffic Services Training Centre (HQ ATSTC). He was accompanied by Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) from the Academy.
The two Commandants moved to the HQ ATSTC Conference Room, the venue for the official proceedings.
During the visit, the Deputy Commandant ATSTC introduced the Centre’s PSOs to the visitors, after which Brigadier General A. Wende presented his team and outlined the purpose of the visit. In his remarks, he recalled the mentorship and guidance he received from Air Vice Marshal Folaji during his training at the Nigerian Defence Academy. He underscored the critical role of the WOA in preparing Warrant Officers for leadership and supervisory responsibilities, noting that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) allocates two training slots annually. He expressed appreciation for the cordial inter-service relationship between the Nigerian Army and the NAF, which underpinned the visit, and commended the warm reception extended to WOA students during their study tours to ATSTC.
In response, the Commandant ATSTC reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Academy and expressed gratitude for the training opportunities extended to NAF Warrant Officers. He outlined the vision and objectives of the Centre, highlighting its achievements as an Approved Training Organisation certified by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. He emphasised that the certification has enabled the Centre to contribute significantly to the development of aviation professionals.
The visit concluded successfully, further strengthening the existing synergy and cooperation between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force.

CHIEF OF AIR STAFF COMMISSIONS NEW STUDENT OFFICERS’ ACCOMMODATION AT ATSTC

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal SK Aneke, has commissioned a newly constructed 30 x One Student Officers’ Accommodation at the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), marking a significant milestone in the NAF ongoing commitment to excellence in training and welfare.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Air Marshal Aneke emphasized the importance of providing a conducive learning and living environment for student officers. He noted that the new accommodation facility will not only enhance comfort but also foster discipline, focus, and productivity among trainees.

The project reflects the Nigerian Air Force’s dedication to improving infrastructure across its training institutions, ensuring that officers receive world-class instruction supported by modern amenities. The accommodation block, designed with functionality and convenience in mind, is expected to ease housing challenges and strengthen the overall training experience at ATSTC.

The Commandant of ATSTC expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff for his unwavering support, highlighting that the facility will greatly boost morale and contribute to the Centre’s mission of producing highly skilled air traffic controllers and aviation specialists.

AIR OFFICER COMMANDING AIR TRAINING COMMAND MAIDEN VISIT TO HEADQUARTERS AIR TRAFFIC SERVICES TRAINING CENTRE KADUNA

On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Air Training Command (ATC), Air Vice Marshal Esen Paul Efanga, undertook his maiden official visit to the Headquarters Air Traffic Services Training Centre (HQ ATSTC). The AOC was accompanied by Principal Staff Officers from Headquarters Air Training Command.

Upon arrival at the ATSTC, the AOC ATC, was received at the ATSTC Quarter Guard by the Commandant, Air Vice Marshal NB Folaji, accompanied by Principal Staff Officers of HQ ATSTC. The AOC thereafter inspected the Quarter Guard before proceeding to the HQ ATSTC Commandant’s Conference Room for the commencement of the official programme.

During the visit, the Commandant, AVM NB Folaji, presented a comprehensive briefing on the activities of ATSTC, with particular emphasis on the Centre’s achievements and prevailing challenges. The briefing highlighted the Centre’s steady incremental development, ongoing training programmes, and key areas requiring enhancement to meet emerging operational and regulatory demands.

In his remarks, the AOC, who assumed office on 7 January 2026, commended the leadership and personnel of ATSTC for the visible progress recorded in training delivery and infrastructure development. He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration and strategic partnerships, particularly through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with relevant civil aviation organizations, to further strengthen capacity building and standardization.

The AOC specifically underscored the urgent need to upgrade the Computer-Based Test (CBT) laboratory to meet Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) standards, to enable the Centre conduct licensed examinations and English Language Proficiency assessments. He assured the Centre of his commitment to ensuring that this objective is achieved. Furthermore, he advised the leadership of ATSTC to deliberately position the Centre as a regional training hub, noting that setting and maintaining high standards should be treated as a personal and collective responsibility.

Additionally, the AOC stressed the need for the Centre to continue contributing effectively to the development of Nigeria’s air defence architecture by aligning its training outputs with current Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) military targets. He reaffirmed his resolve to support ATSTC in achieving its desired objectives and charged all personnel to remain dedicated, professional and proactive in the discharge of their duties in support of the Nigerian Air Force’s mandate.

The maiden visit was successful and further reinforced the AOC’s commitment to strengthening training excellence and operational readiness within the Air Training Command and the NAF at large.

ATSTC AND AEROSOLUTIONS SIGN MoU TO STRENGTHEN AVIATION TRAINING COLLABORATION

On 9 September, 2025 the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC) has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aerosolutions Consultancy and Training Services Limited (ACT) to enhance cooperation in aviation training, capacity development, and research.

The ceremony, held at the ATSTC Headquarters in Kaduna, featured a structured programme that included a courtesy call to the Commandant of ATSTC, presentations on the highlights of the MoU, and remarks from both parties before the official signing. Senior officers, staff, and members of the visiting delegation were in attendance.

In his remarks, the Commandant of ATSTC reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of training in line with its statutory role of developing air traffic and aviation services personnel for the Nigerian Air Force, other security agencies, and the civil aviation sector.

On his part, the Managing Director of Aerosolutions expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that the collaboration will expand opportunities for advanced training in cabin crew operations, flight dispatch, aviation management, and research consultancy services.

The MoU establishes a framework for joint initiatives in:

✅Human capacity development through specialized training programmes such as initial and advanced cabin crew courses, dispatcher training, and aviation management training.

ATSTC AND NCAT SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON AVIATION TRAINING COLLABORATION

The Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC) and the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, on 29 August, 2025 formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in aviation training and professional development.

The Signing of the MoU, held at ATSTC Headquarters in Kaduna, commenced with the arrival of the NCAT delegation and a courtesy call on the Commandant of ATSTC, Air Vice Marshal NB Folaji. This was followed by formal introductions, presentation of the MoU highlights, and remarks from both Chief Executives.

In his address, Air Vice Marshal NB Folaji, Commandant and Accountable Manager of ATSTC, noted that the agreement represents a significant step in enhancing training capacity for both military and civilian aviation professionals. He reaffirmed ATSTC’s commitment to delivering quality training in line with international best practices.

Dr. Danjuma Adamu Ismaila, Rector and Chief Executive of NCAT, stated that NCAT does not see ATSTC as a competitor but rather a reliable partner that can compliment the services of the NCAT. He emphasized the strategic value of the collaboration, stressing that it would consolidate NCAT’s mandate as an ICAO-certified Platinum Training Centre of Excellence while furthering the shared objective of producing competent aviation professionals for Nigeria and allied countries.

The MoU provides a framework for cooperation in several key areas, including:

• Development and joint delivery of aviation training programmes consistent with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

• Exchange of technical expertise and personnel for instructional and advisory services.

• Facilitation of joint programmes in Air Traffic Control, Flight Dispatch, Cabin Crew, Aviation Management, and other specialized courses.

• The conduct of TRAINAIR PLUS courses.

The agreement, which will run for an initial period of two years subject to renewal, also makes provision for mutual access to training resources, structured exchange programmes, and collaboration in monitoring, evaluation, and certification of training outcomes.

The formal signing was witnessed by senior officials of both institutions. Proceedings concluded with the signing of the visitors’ book, a group photograph, and a brief refreshment. This partnership is expected to advance the objectives of both institutions in capacity building, technical cooperation, and the development of highly skilled manpower for the aviation industry.

ATSTC HOLDS COMBINED INAUGURATION CEREMONY FOR BASIC ATCA AND BASE OPS COURSES

The Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), Kaduna, on Friday 8 August, 2025 inaugurated participants of the Basic Air Traffic Control Assistant (ATCA) Course 23/2025 and Base Operations (Base Ops) Course 20/2025, marking another milestone in the Centre’s commitment to building professional capacity in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The ceremony, presided over by the Commandant Air Vice Marshal NB Folaji, underscored the strategic role of Air Traffic Control Assistants and Base Ops personnel in ensuring safe, efficient, and seamless air operations. In his address, the Commandant expressed gratitude to the Almighty for the opportunity to witness the event and commended the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar DFS, for his continued support to ATSTC. He highlighted the Centre’s transformation into a regional hub for aviation-related human capacity development, not only for the NAF but also for the nation and beyond.

The Commandant charged the participants to take full advantage of the training, which is aligned with the Chief of the Air Staff’s Command Philosophy of “deliberate training and mission-oriented force development.” He emphasized that the knowledge gained would be vital in enhancing operational safety and efficiency across NAF airfields and joint airfields, especially in view of current internal security challenges.

Presenting the course highlights, the Acting Director General Academics, Squadron Leader SA Uloko, explained that the training is designed to equip participants with theoretical and practical knowledge in airspace operations, aerodrome control, meteorology, flight planning, and other critical modules. He noted that the courses, which began with arrivals on 4 August 2025, will run until 23 December 2025, featuring classroom instruction, facility tours at Hassan Usman Katsina International Airport and 401 Flying Training School, as well as rigorous examinations with a 75% minimum pass mark.

He also reiterated ATSTC’s uncompromising standards of discipline, warning that any act capable of undermining the Centre’s integrity would attract appropriate sanctions.

The inauguration concluded with the formal declaration of both courses open, as the Commandant urged participants to study diligently, remain disciplined, and strive to make positive impacts on the Service and their families.

ATSTC CELEBRATES COMBINED GRADUATION OF MAIDEN INITIAL CABIN CREW AND ATCA/BASE OPS UPGRADING COURSES

The Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), Kaduna, proudly hosted a Combined Graduation Ceremony for the maiden Initial Cabin Crew Course 1/2025 and the ATCA/Base Operations Upgrading Courses 8/2025 on Friday, 1 August 2025. The momentous event was held at the Centre’s parade ground, drawing distinguished guests, families, and senior officers in a celebration of excellence, professionalism, and aviation advancement.

The Special Guest of Honour, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar DFS, Chief of the Air Staff, was ably represented by the Air Officer Commanding, Air Training Command, AVM Ahmed Yusuf Dari, who delivered the keynote address. In his remarks, he underscored the strategic relevance of continuous professional training in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), commending ATSTC’s role in developing competent aviation personnel and aligning its programs with NCAA and international standards.

He emphasized that the graduating Cabin Crew, Air Traffic Control Assistants, and Base Operators were entering a vital phase of service, with responsibilities that directly influence air safety and mission success. He encouraged them to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity in their careers, noting that their conduct and output would reflect the value of the training they had received.

Earlier in the ceremony, the Commandant of ATSTC, AVM Nosiru Babatunde Folaji, warmly welcomed dignitaries and lauded the graduates for their resilience and commitment throughout their intensive training programs. He reaffirmed the Centre’s vision of becoming a world-class aviation training hub and extended gratitude to the Chief of the Air Staff for his unwavering support. The Commandant also appreciated AVM Dari’s leadership and mentorship, which have significantly improved training delivery across the Centre.

AVM Folaji noted that ATSTC’s recent accreditation by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as an Approved Training Organization (ATO) marked a significant milestone. With this recognition, the Centre now delivers certified training in Air Traffic Control, Flight Dispatch, and Cabin Crew operations — further opening doors to civil aviation stakeholders and government MDAs.

He highlighted recent infrastructural developments, including the ongoing construction of 30 x 1 student officers' accommodation and the installation of an advanced Air Traffic Control Simulator to enhance radar surveillance training. He used the opportunity to appeal for additional support towards building more hostels, a library, an auditorium, and a student cafeteria to enable simultaneous course runs. Also, a souvenir was presented to the Special Guest of Honor during the graduation ceremony.

The ceremony also celebrated outstanding individuals, with special awards presented to the best-performing Cabin Crew trainees. As the graduates prepare to sit for their NCAA licensing exams, both AVM Dari and AVM Folaji urged them to remain focused, embrace lifelong learning, and serve as worthy ambassadors of the Centre and the Nigerian Air Force.

INITIAL CABIN CREW COURSE 1/2025 UNDERTAKES DITCHING EXERCISE AS PART OF PRACTICAL TRAINING

In a significant step toward developing real-world aviation safety competencies, students of the Initial Cabin Crew Course 1/2025 at the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC) recently participated in a ditching exercise, a critical component of their practical training curriculum.

The exercise, conducted under the supervision of certified instructors and safety personnel, simulated an emergency water landing scenario — a core requirement for cabin crew certification in line with NCAA and ICAO standards. It was designed to equip trainees with the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on experience required to handle inflight water emergencies with professionalism and precision.

During the drill, the trainees demonstrated life-saving techniques including life vest inflation, water evacuation procedures, and the coordinated use of life rafts. The session emphasized quick response, teamwork, and strict adherence to safety protocols — hallmarks of a well-trained flight crew.

Speaking on the exercise, the Commandant of ATSTC, AVM Nosiru Babatunde Folaji, commended the students for their enthusiasm and discipline, noting that such practical exposures are integral to the Centre’s vision of producing competent and confident aviation professionals for the Nigerian Air Force and beyond. "The ditching exercise is not just a procedural requirement — it’s a test of readiness, character, and teamwork under pressure," he said. "These young airmen and airwomen have shown commendable dedication, and I am confident they will make the NAF proud wherever they are deployed."

The event was also an opportunity for trainees to capture some memorable photographs, reflecting both the seriousness of the exercise and the camaraderie developed over the course of their training. The energy, teamwork, and joy captured in the images spoke volumes about their growth, unity, and shared sense of purpose.

INITIAL CABIN CREW COURSE 1/2025 STUDENTS EMBARK ON ONE-WEEK ON-THE-JOB TRAINING AT 307 EXECUTIVE AIRLIFT GROUP

As part of efforts to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world aviation operations, students of the Initial Cabin Crew Course 1/2025 from the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC) recently completed a one-week On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the prestigious 307 Executive Airlift Group, Nigerian Air Force Base, Abuja.

The training exercise, which took place under the guidance of experienced flight operations personnel, was carefully designed to expose the trainee Cabin Crew to the operational realities of military airlift services, particularly in a high-profile and executive transport environment. It served as a vital step in reinforcing the theoretical knowledge acquired at ATSTC with hands-on, professional experience in active aircrew settings.

During the program, the trainees observed and participated in essential Cabin Crew responsibilities, including pre-flight safety briefings, emergency equipment checks, in-flight service protocols, and post-flight procedures. They also interacted closely with aircrew members and ground handling teams, gaining insight into the importance of coordination, situational awareness, and strict adherence to aviation safety standards.

Speaking on the success of the OJT, the Commandant of ATSTC, AVM NB Folaji, who was ably represented by the Deputy Commandant/ Head of Training, Air Cdre NS Hassan commended the management of the 307 Executive Airlift Group for their cooperation and continued support in providing a real-time learning environment for the students. The partnership with 307 Executive Airlift Group plays a key role in preparing our students to serve confidently and competently as Cabin Crew in the Nigerian Air Force.

The students expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and mentorship they received during the OJT. For many, it was an eye-opening experience that deepened their understanding of the Cabin Crew profession and boosted their confidence as they prepare for full integration into NAF’s air operations. As the course approaches its final phase, the ATSTC remains committed to delivering holistic, globally aligned training that equips its graduates with the skills, knowledge, and experience to contribute meaningfully to both military and civil aviation sectors.
