Activating Educational Institutions for Measurable Development in Kwara State

A Policy Advocacy Position by Make Kwara Great Again (MKGA)

Kwara State has made substantial investments in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and technical institutions. These institutions represent strategic public assets funded by taxpayers to build human capital and drive socio-economic advancement.

At Make Kwara Great Again (MKGA), we believe that educational institutions must evolve beyond certificate-awarding centers into measurable engines of development.

Globally, regions that integrate higher education with public policy and infrastructure development experience stronger innovation performance, higher youth employment rates, and improved productivity. The World Bank and other development institutions consistently highlight the importance of linking research institutions to real-sector growth.

The question before us is straightforward:

Are we maximizing the developmental impact of our state-owned institutions?

Kwara’s Untapped Institutional Capital

Across our institutions, we have:
• Civil and mechanical engineers
• Agricultural scientists and extension experts
• ICT developers and data analysts
• Building technologists
• Skilled technicians and workshop professionals
• Policy researchers and academic experts

Collectively, this represents significant technical and intellectual capital.

These professionals and students can directly support state priorities such as:
• Affordable housing innovation
• Road and drainage improvement strategies
• Flood mitigation research
• Agricultural productivity enhancement
• Digital transformation of government services

When state projects are executed without structured collaboration with local institutions, we miss opportunities to strengthen internal capacity, reduce long-term costs, and retain economic value within Kwara.

From Academic Structures to Innovation Hubs

Workshops, laboratories, and research farms should not operate in isolation from public development.

With structured collaboration:
• Engineering departments can contribute to infrastructure design innovation.
• Agricultural faculties can pilot climate-adaptive farming models.
• ICT units can support digital governance systems.
• Technical colleges can fabricate components for local infrastructure.

This approach strengthens both the education system and the state economy.

MKGA’s Proposed Institutional Integration Framework

To ensure measurable outcomes, MKGA proposes the consideration of:

1️⃣ Institutional Impact Reporting

Annual reports measuring each institution’s contribution to defined state development indicators.

2️⃣ Ministry–Institution Collaboration Protocol

Formalized partnerships between relevant ministries and state institutions.

3️⃣ Applied Research & Innovation Grants

Targeted funding for research projects that address specific local challenges.

4️⃣ Structured Student Engagement

Mandatory integration of students into public projects through supervised internships and practical deployment.

5️⃣ Procurement Alignment Policy

Where technically appropriate, priority engagement of in-state institutional expertise before external outsourcing.

Why This Matters

This is not about politics.
It is about performance.

It is about:
• Strengthening youth employability
• Building local technical capacity
• Reducing long-term project dependency
• Promoting fiscal efficiency
• Creating sustainable economic growth

True development is not just about constructing new structures — it is about activating existing ones.

Kwara already has the institutions.
Kwara already has the professionals.
Kwara already has the students.

With structured integration and measurable accountability, these assets can become catalysts for transformation.

Make Kwara Great Again (MKGA) remains committed to advocating for data-driven, performance-based development policies that place citizens and institutional strength at the center of governance.

Strengthening Public Confidence in Electoral Reforms Through Clear Legal Language

Nigeria stands at a critical point in its democratic evolution. Citizens across the country have shown growing interest in electoral reforms, not out of hostility to institutions, but out of a shared desire for credibility, stability, and national unity.

Recent public concern around the wording of result movement — particularly the distinction between “transfer” and “transmission” — reflects a deeper issue: public trust.

Technology has already become an integral part of Nigeria’s electoral process. BVAS accreditation, electronic uploads, and digital verification systems have demonstrated that innovation can reduce human error and limit post-poll disputes. As such, citizens increasingly see electronic transmission of results as a logical extension of existing reforms, not a radical departure.

The call from the public is not for witch-hunting, institutional embarrassment, or retroactive punishment. Rather, it is a forward-looking appeal for:
• Legal clarity
• Predictability in election outcomes
• Reduced discretion at vulnerable stages of collation

Clear and unambiguous language in the law helps all stakeholders — INEC, political parties, the judiciary, and voters — operate with confidence and shared expectations.

We respectfully urge lawmakers to consider reforms that:

•Reflect Nigeria’s current technological capacity

•Align legal provisions with practices already in use

•Strengthen trust without destabilizing institutions

Electoral laws are strongest when they remove doubt, not when they leave room for conflicting interpretations. A reform that reassures citizens today will protect democracy tomorrow.

This advocacy is offered in good faith, in support of the legislature’s constitutional role, and in the collective interest of a peaceful, credible, and progressive Nigeria.

Adamu as a Salary Earner (Employee)
Adamu works for a tech firm in ilorin earning ₦150,000 monthly (₦1.8 million annually).
• Who Pays: Adamu is a taxpayer because ₦1.8M is above the ₦800k threshold.
• The Math: His first ₦800,000 is taxed at 0%. Only the remaining ₦1,000,000 is subject to the new progressive rates (starting at 15%).
• Exemptions: His pension contributions (8%), National Health Insurance (5%), and a new Rent Relief (up to ₦500,000 or 20% of rent) are deducted before tax is calculated.
• His Duty: He doesn't need to do much; his employer handles the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) deductions monthly.

🚨 FACT CHECK: About the 7.5% VAT on Banking Services 🚨

There’s a lot of misinformation flying around about the new VAT on banking services, so let’s set the record straight.

From January 19, 2026, Nigerians are NOT being taxed on the money they transfer or on their savings.

👉 What the 7.5% VAT applies to:
* Bank service charges only
* Mobile transfer fees
* USSD transaction fees
* Card issuance and similar processing charges

👉 What it does NOT apply to:
* ❌ The amount of money you send
* ❌ Your account balance
* ❌ Interest earned on savings or deposits

For example:
If your bank charges ₦100 as a transfer fee, VAT will be ₦7.50 on that ₦100, not on the money you’re sending.

This VAT is collected by banks and fintechs and remitted to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). It’s mainly about stricter enforcement on service fees — not a tax on your personal funds.

Let’s avoid panic and share correct information.
Knowledge saves stress. 🇳🇬

📢 PUBLIC NOTICE: Don't Be Scammed by Fake News About the New Nigeria Tax Law! 🛑
There's a lot of misleading information going around, causing confusion and allowing some fraudulent POS operators and individuals to trick people. We're here to set the record straight with the OFFICIAL FACTS about the Nigeria Tax Act 2025!
❌ MYTH: "The bank randomly deducts N50 from everyone's account for tax!"
✅ FACT: From January 1, 2026, the N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) will be paid by the SENDER, not the receiver, on transfers of N10,000 or more. If you receive money, you shouldn't see this deduction!
❌ MYTH: "There's a new tax on all your savings!"
✅ FACT: There is NO TAX on your account balance! You are only taxed on income earned or interest generated, not the capital itself.
❌ MYTH: "The new law heavily taxes low-income earners and small businesses!"
✅ FACT:
* If you earn N800,000 or less per year, you pay ZERO Personal Income Tax. This law helps the poor!
* Small companies with an annual turnover of less than N50 Million pay 0% Company Income Tax. This supports small businesses!
🚨 HOW TO SPOT A SCAM:
* "Emergency Deductions": Banks will NEVER ask for your OTP or personal details for "tax processing."
* POS Overcharges: Don't let anyone charge you "extra tax" on top of standard fees. Report dishonest agents!
* TIN Scams: Get your Tax Identification Number (TIN) from official FIRS/NRS channels, not street agents demanding high fees.
Knowledge is power! Share this post to protect your friends, family, and community from fraud. Let's make sure everyone knows their rights and the truth about the Nigeria Tax Law 2025!
