: NLC to Seek ₦500,000 Minimum Wage in Fresh Talks with FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to begin fresh negotiations with the Federal Government for a new national minimum wage, arguing that the current ₦70,000 wage can no longer sustain Nigerian workers amid soaring inflation and the rising cost of living.

Speaking at the Rights of Workers Summit in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero, represented by Deputy President Audu Titus Amba, said organised labour would soon engage the government on a wage review.

Amba said the current minimum wage had been overtaken by economic realities, insisting that workers deserved a more realistic salary.

"Anything less than ₦500,000 cannot cater for workers. The current minimum wage is due for review, and we will soon begin negotiations with the government," he said.

Also speaking, Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, represented by Secretary-General Nuhu Toro, said persistent inflation, rising food prices, transport costs and rent had severely eroded workers' purchasing power.
