The Real Dilemma of Work Income
First, let's look at a real-world example of work income. In garment factories in Dhaka, Bangladesh, tens of thousands of workers toil for 12 hours a day, earning less than $10. This translates to an hourly wage of less than $1. This low-income, long-hours work model traps many workers in developing countries in a state of "time poverty."
These workers exchange excessive working hours for meager incomes, yet they remain stuck in poverty. Their working hours are endlessly extended, but their incomes stagnate. This "time poverty" not only deprives them of rest but also of opportunities to improve their skills and lives.
The global supply chain locks developing countries into low-end manufacturing, with multinational corporations profiting by exploiting labor costs. Workers are forced to accept low wages because refusing means losing their jobs. This structural dilemma keeps workers at a disadvantage in the battle between time and income.
Breaking this cycle requires governments to raise minimum wage standards and strengthen labor rights protections, businesses to take social responsibility and improve working conditions, and the international community to establish fair trade rules. Only when the value of workers' time is truly respected can the curse of "time poverty" be broken.
This is also applicable to us in Nigeria.
