PURSUANT TO HER SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT DRIVE, OYRTMA PARTNER STAKEHOLDERS IN SOUTH-WEST TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE INTER & INTRA STATE TRAFFFIC MANAGEMENT

22nd May, 2023.

In pursuant of her transitionary drive towards sustainable traffic management, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) has begun high-level collaborations and partnership with relevant stakeholders towards ensuring sustained road safety, free vehicular movements and crash-free travel experience across all roads within and beyond Oyo State territory.

This was as the Authority, alongside her counterparts in Lagos and Ogun States, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) respectively attended a training/ capacity building workshop organized by Bovas & Company Limited for drivers of articulated trucks and trailers.

During the event, which was held in Ibadan, the Executive Chairman, OYRTMA, Mogaji Akin Fagbemi Ph.D reeled out the mandate, vision and mission statements of the Authority to include ensuring safety of all road users in Oyo State and minimizing road traffic crashes and travel time through effective, efficient and sustainable traffic management strategies.

Although ably represented at the program by Mr. Adeoye Kola Ayoade, the General Manager, OYRTMA, Dr. Fagbemi harped on the need for good interpersonal relationship between truck drivers and road traffic officials whilst also explaining the interpretation of various road signs, symbols, markings and regulations as well as the need to obeying them at all times.

“You will agree that one of the most important hard skills a driver should possess is to consistently obey traffic laws and following laid down safety rules and regulations. This is because driving can be a potentially dangerous activity and great caution is usually needed when operating vehicles especially the heavy-duty ones”, Fagbemi said.

Speaking further, the OYRTMA boss explained to participants how to know a good driver. According to him, “a good driver must always execute routine maintenance, take care of the vehicle and always put other road users into consideration. A good driver must know the rules and signals as applicable to their routes. He must be well acquainted with automobile systems and drive according to manufacturer’s instructions. Last but not the least, a good driver must respond to emergency situations appropriately by reaching out for help either from colleague drivers or escalating such maters to the nearest Traffic Management Agencies or as the case may be, the Police. When the vehicle drivers do all this and we on our part as policy drivers do our jobs, we shall achieve a sustainable traffic management model that other States and even nations would love to emulate”, Fagbemi said.

You may recall that OYRTMA recently announced her readiness to transition beyond her initial community traffic management model to a more sustainable traffic management initiative in-line with the Governor Seyi Makinde’s Sustainable Development Agenda for Oyo State, 2023-2027.

BREAKING: OYRTMA CLEARS SABO ROAD, IBADAN IN-LINE WITH OYSG SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AGENDA; READS RIOT ACT ON INDESCRIMINATELY PARKED VEHICLES ALONG THE ROUTE

3rd April, 2023.

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has stormed the Sabo Area of Ibadan Metropolis to clear all indiscriminately parked vehicles and wares abandoned on the road causing perpetual and avoidable traffic loggerheads that results in untold hardship on commuters and all road users along the route.

This, according to the Authority is sequel to several public complaints and official petitions coupled with multiple road crashes that has for some time characterized travel experience of motorists in and around the axis.

Addressing newsmen during and after the exercise, the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Mogaji Akin Fagbemi explained that the move is not to spite any persons, tribe or religion but to ensure the safety of all road users within the entire territory of Oyo State particularly along the Sabo-Mokola road.

In his words, the OYRTMA Boss said: “This exercise is aimed at enthroning sanity on the Sabo-Mokola route. It is specifically to ensure the safety of all road users, minimize travel time and eliminate road crashes that has recently surged along the route because of the indiscriminate parking and laissez-faire attitude of some vehicle owners around the area. We have received multiple public complaints through official letters by concerned residents in Sabo itself as well as numerous social media calls to sanitize the area. We had explored our Community Traffic Management System (CTMS) over some months in the area with trained residents of the area empowered, alongside our Regular Officers and Men to manage traffic, impound erring vehicles and ensure sanity on the road. Through this, we had sufficiently sensitized vehicle/tricycle/motorcycle owners as well as business owners around the axis to shorn the practice of indiscriminate parking and road encroachment.

However, we discovered that the actualized result with regards to compliance to extant road traffic laws of Oyo State along the Sabo-Mokola route was far bellow our expectations. More hardship is being inflicted on road users on daily basis and traders had taken over the road corridor almost up to the median. We further engaged the leaders of the communities dwelling within the vicinity and yet, most vehicle owners and traders remained adamant. It therefore became critical for our newly established tactical traffic operatives in conjunction with officials of the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and other relevant stakeholders to execute the operation you all witnessed today. Apparently, it is not aimed at any particular tribe, religion or persons. It became necessary to ensure the safety of all road users particularly as we, at OYRTMA, are now transitioning to a more Sustainable System of traffic management in-line with the Sustainable Development Masterplan of the State Government under Omituntun 2.0 led by His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, The Executive Governor of Oyo State”, Fagbemi said.

Speaking further, Dr. Akin Fagbemi cited various sections of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority Law 2009 which has been persistently infracted upon by motorists along the route without any signs of change or compliance. In his words, “We must make it abundantly clear that Laws in Oyo State are applicable to all places within the territory of the State, including road traffic laws. Regardless of whose ox is gored, the law is always blind and we are not deterred by any factors whatsoever to enforce extant road traffic laws of the State. However, we shall continue to engage the people through multiple sensitization and awareness initiatives on road safety matters”.

The OYRTMA Boss added that “consequent upon the approval of His Excellency, The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde FNSE, plans are on to further train and retrain operatives in its employ for better and effective service delivery especially as the State moves towards sustainable development agenda under the incoming Omituntun 2.0”, Fagbemi concluded.

OYRTMA ADVICES PEDESTRIANS AGAINST TEXT-WALKING ON THE ROAD; RECOUNTS HORRIBLE ACCIDENT

3rd May 2023.

The Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) has strongly advised pedestrians across the State to shorn the act of text-walking or complete blockage of hearing while on public roads.

The charge was made today Wednesday by the Executive Chairman, OYRTMA, Mogaji Akin Fagbemi Ph.D while speaking at a seminar in Ibadan tagged “Longevity of the Youth”. According to him, “The use of mobile gadgets, especially hand phones for texting, chatting and calling while on the road by most of our youths has been discovered to be one of the most rampant causes of accidents resulting to fatalities and loss of lives. If you must use your phones while on the road, do it responsibly by stepping out of the driveway and ensure you do not plug all your ears to enable you hear any strange vehicular movement that could occur from brake failure, overspeeding etc. I urge you all to prioritize your safety to avoid premature death. Negligence of anyone portends danger to all while vigilance of everyone implies safety for all”, Fagbemi said.

In corroborating his stance, the OYRTMA Boss narrated the gory scene of a recent accident involving a young man who was moving along the road corridor in a popular area in Ogbomoso with his ears fully plugged with headsets connected to mobile phone on high volume. “The young man, eyewitnesses narrates was blaring music on full volumes and chatting on his Smartphone when tragedy struck. His inability to hear any sound from the surrounding environment made him oblivious of the chants of passersby to run for safety when the break of an articulated truck failed and was navigating to hit a safe spot to stop. In the process, the young man was crushed and he lost his life almost immediately. That is totally avoidable had it been he heard the scream of others. Same is applicable to those found of chatting on the roads. Most times, they get engrossed with the phones that they may not see an oncoming vehicle. This has also led to multiple avoidable accidents that claimed precious lives”, Dr. Fagbemi said.

He concluded by imploring the youngsters and by extension all pedestrians across the State to shorn the temptation of chatting, texting or blaring music on full volumes while on the road to avoid disasters. “I therefore wish to admonish you all as well as all pedestrians in Oyo State to shorn the act of using mobile phones while on the road”, Dr. Fagbemi concluded.

SUSTAINABLE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: OYRTMA PARTNERS OLUYOLE LGA ON JUNCTION IMPROVEMENT AT SOKA, IBADAN.
…Issues Stern Warning on Road Encroachment by Traders, Others.

2nd May, 2023.

In-line with the sustainable development agenda of the Oyo State Government under His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde FNSE, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) has moved to further integrate relationship with Local Government Authorities across the State in a bid to consolidate on its existing Community Traffic Management System which is a crucial subset of the broader Sustainable Traffic Management Initiative to ease traffic flow, reduce road crashes and enthrone sanity on all roads within the State.

This was revealed by the Executive Chairman, OYRTMA, Mogaji Akin Fagbemi Ph.D while playing host to the Executive Chairman, Oluyole Local Government Area, Hon. Olaide Popoola at the administrative headquarters of the Authority, Agodi, Ibadan. According to Hon. Popoola, “the continuous difficulty experienced on roads by residents of different parts of the State is majorly man-made. People are found of disobeying extant road traffic laws, park arbitrarily and even some people taking over government roads or setbacks for private business activities. This is not only inimical to the wellbeing of the communities but also serves as a great bane for development. A typical example is the popular Soka Junction in Oluyole Local Government where untold hardship is being melted on commuters on a daily basis as a result of indiscriminate parking by motorists, hawking and illegal road encroachment by traders as well as abuse of Government land by some individuals. We have to step in to put a sustainable stop to this menace and the role of OYRTMA in achieving this is apparently non-negligible. We have embarked on junction improvement at Soka and the entire area is cleared of any of such encumbrances. For continuity and sustenance of compliance, enforcement operations along the axis is key and we are confident OYRTMA would double efforts in this regards”, the Oluyole LGA Chair posited.

In his response, Dr. Fagbemi assured of the commitment of OYRTMA to further expanding existing relationship with Oluyole Local Government particularly as it remains the center of several commercial and industrial hubs of the State. “As a government agency, we are ready to expand and build on our existing relationship with all local Governments across the State particularly Oluyole because of its strategic position to economic growth in the State. If you would recall, we earlier moved our Operational Headquarters to Sanyo, Oluyole Local Government Area in a bid to entrenching our Community Traffic Management System which is central to our drive to keying in to the Sustainable development agenda of the State Government under Omituntun 2.0 led by our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde FNSE”.

Speaking further, the OYRTMA Boss added, “Like we have been doing, we shall intensify advocacy/awareness campaigns to motorists and all road users in the State. Additionally, we shall enhance our enforcement operations across all LGAs in the State particularly against the indiscriminate display of wares on road corridors by adamant traders especially along Soka Junction, Eleyele-Ologuneru Road, Mokola Roundabout, Challenge, Iwo-Road and other identified spots”, Fagbemi concluded.
