HEALING ZAMFARA: HOW GOVERNOR DAUDA LAWAL REBUILT THE STATE’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THREE YEARS.

When Governor Dauda Lawal took office, Zamfara State’s healthcare system was in a critical condition. Decades of neglect had left hospitals bare, equipment broken, and medical professionals fleeing the state in search of better working conditions. In fact, according to the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, the entire Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, the state's flagship medical facility, was relying on just a single ultrasound machine.

Fast forward three years, and the story has completely changed. Through aggressive reforms, strategic funding, and a genuine commitment to human welfare, Governor Lawal has orchestrated a massive turnaround in Zamfara’s medical landscape.

Here is a look at how the administration revived healthcare delivery across the state.

Breathing New Life into State Hospitals
The days of Zamfara residents traveling long distances to neighboring states like Sokoto, Kaduna, or Zaria for basic medical scans are coming to an end. The Lawal administration has focused heavily on upgrading existing infrastructure and bringing world class diagnostics home.

The Transformation of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital
Once a symbol of a struggling system, the specialist hospital has been transformed into a modern, fully equipped medical hub that can compete with any facility in Nigeria. The state has outfitted the hospital with advanced diagnostic technology, including modern MRI machines, CT scans, and endoscopy equipment.

Upgrading General Hospitals
The sweeping renovations didn't stop at the capital. More than 12 General Hospitals across the state have been completely overhauled and equipped with modern facilities. Notably, the General Hospital in Talata Mafara has been so thoroughly modernized that it is now rated as one of the finest hospital facilities in the country.

Strengthening Grassroots Care
To ensure that rural communities aren't left behind, Governor Lawal's administration has renovated and equipped over 100 Primary Healthcare Centers spread across all 14 Local Government Areas. This ensures that basic, life saving care is always within reach for everyday citizens.

Empowering the Medical Workforce
A hospital is only as good as the people working inside it. Recognizing that poor welfare had caused a massive brain drain of doctors and nurses, Governor Lawal took decisive steps to make Zamfara an attractive place for medical professionals to work.

Zamfara now offers one of the highest salary packages for healthcare workers in Nigeria, effectively halting the brain drain and attracting top tier talent back to the state. Thanks to these improved conditions, every single hospital in the state is now staffed with qualified medical doctors.

In a major boost to morale, the Governor cleared the long overdue retirement benefits of healthcare professionals and other civil servants across the state.

Furthermore, the State Ministry of Health itself received a complete makeover. Offices were renovated, new equipment was provided, and wireless internet was installed to streamline administrative work and boost productivity.

Expanding Access and Financial Protection: The ZAMCHEMA Success
A key pillar of Governor Lawal’s healthcare agenda is ensuring that citizens can actually afford medical treatment.

Through the Zamfara State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (ZAMCHEMA), the administration has shattered expectations by enrolling over 300,000 beneficiaries, including civil servants, low-income individuals, and vulnerable populations.
This massive rollout has significantly reduced out of pocket medical spending, protecting families from financial ruin during health crises. To sustain this momentum, the state has strengthened critical ties with international development partners like. WHO, UNICEF, and ACASUS to boost healthcare funding and resources.

Additionally, the administration upgraded the ZAMCHEMA Toll Free Call Center to ensure citizens can easily lodge complaints, give feedback, and resolve issues instantly.

A Healthier Future for Zamfara
By establishing localized diagnostic centers, upgrading rural clinics, and taking proper care of medical staff, Governor Dauda Lawal has brought quality, affordable healthcare straight to the doorsteps of the people.
Three years ago, Zamfara's health sector was on life support.

Today, thanks to deliberate and compassionate leadership, it is thriving, resilient, and built to serve generations to come.

THREE YEARS OF PURPOSEFUL LEADERSHIP AND TRANSFORMATION UNDER GOVERNOR DAUDA LAWAL

Over the past three years, Zamfara State has witnessed a remarkable journey of recovery, transformation, and renewed hope under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal. Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, the administration has remained committed to delivering the dividends of democracy through strategic reforms, people-oriented policies, and impactful governance anchored on the Rescue Mission Agenda.

When Governor Dauda Lawal came into office, Zamfara State was confronted with numerous challenges, including insecurity, infrastructural decay, poor healthcare delivery, weakened educational standards, economic hardship, and institutional inefficiency. However, through determination, transparency, and focused leadership, the administration has steadily repositioned the state toward sustainable development and progress.

Security restoration has remained at the forefront of the administration’s priorities. The government has consistently supported security agencies with operational vehicles, communication gadgets, logistics, and other critical security infrastructure aimed at combating banditry and restoring peace across affected communities. Through strengthened collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders, significant progress has been recorded in improving security coordination, restoring confidence among citizens, and encouraging economic and farming activities in several parts of the state.

In the education sector, Governor Dauda Lawal declared a state of emergency and immediately embarked on comprehensive reforms to revive the sector. Schools across the 14 local government areas have undergone renovation and reconstruction, while teaching and learning materials were distributed to improve academic standards. The administration also settled outstanding WAEC and NECO examination fees worth billions of naira, thereby restoring opportunities for thousands of students. Recruitment and capacity-building initiatives for teachers have equally been strengthened to improve the quality of education throughout the state.

The healthcare sector has equally experienced notable improvements under the present administration. Healthcare facilities have been rehabilitated and upgraded, primary healthcare services strengthened, and access to essential drugs and medical equipment improved. These interventions have significantly enhanced healthcare delivery and contributed to reducing maternal and child mortality. Zamfara State has also received national recognition for its improved primary healthcare performance.

Infrastructure development remains one of the most visible achievements of the administration. Massive road construction and rehabilitation projects have been executed within Gusau metropolis and across various parts of the state, including township and rural access roads connecting communities and markets. These projects have improved transportation, enhanced commercial activities, and transformed the physical outlook of the state through ongoing urban renewal initiatives.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has also introduced important economic and financial reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and prudent management of public resources. The abolition of cash revenue collection in government agencies has strengthened digital financial systems and reduced leakages. Despite inheriting serious financial challenges, the administration continues to maintain steady developmental progress through responsible governance and strategic budgeting.

Recognizing agriculture as the backbone of Zamfara’s economy, the administration has continued to support farmers through agricultural interventions, rural development initiatives, and improved access roads aimed at boosting food production and enhancing economic activities within rural communities. These efforts are contributing significantly toward improving livelihoods and economic stability across the state.

The administration has equally prioritized workers’ welfare and human capital development through prompt payment of salaries, institutional reforms, training programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, and public service reforms designed to improve efficiency and service delivery. In addition, the government has invested heavily in digital transformation and innovation through the Zamfara Information Technology Development Agency (ZITDA), promoting ICT development, digital governance, and modernization of government operations.

The achievements recorded under Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration have attracted several national recognitions and awards in the areas of governance, healthcare, infrastructure development, transparency, and service delivery. These recognitions reflect the growing confidence in the administration’s commitment to rebuilding Zamfara State and improving the lives of its citizens.

As the administration marks its third anniversary, the people of Zamfara State continue to witness a government driven by vision, accountability, and commitment to sustainable development. Although challenges remain, the foundation laid within the last three years clearly demonstrates that the Rescue Mission Agenda is yielding positive results.

Under the purposeful leadership of His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, Zamfara State is steadily advancing toward a future defined by peace, growth, development, and renewed prosperity for all.

EID EL-ADHA 2026: ZAMFARA GOVERNOR URGES INCREASED PRAYERS FOR PEACE

Governor Dauda Lawal has called for more prayers for peace in Zamfara State and Nigeria.

The governor, in a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, extended his felicitations to Muslims on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated annually by Muslims around the world on the 10th of Dhulhijjah, is a festival of sacrifice.

It is a festival that honours the obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) to Allah (SWT).

In his message to the people of Zamfara, Governor Lawal expressed gratitude to Allah for witnessing the historic airlift of pilgrims from Gusau International Airport.

"I felicitate with the Muslims on the occasion of Eid al-Adha 2026.

"The sacrifice performed during Eid is symbolic of Prophet Ibrahim’s submission and is also part of the Hajj rites for pilgrims.

"I want to use this opportunity to call on the good people of Zamfara, especially our pilgrims, to remain steadfast in prayers for our state and Nigeria.

"We have made progress in the fight against banditry, which is why dispersed communities are returning to their homes.

"Last week, we successfully returned thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral community of Fegin Kanawa Village in Gusau Local Government Area after over a year of displacement.

"We are committed to ensuring the safe return of all displaced persons to their homes. Such successes are only possible due to our collective prayers. I urge us to pray more, especially during sacred religious festivals.

"I wish everyone a peaceful Eid celebration."

The governor joined thousands for the Eid prayer at the Gusau Central Eid prayer ground.

GOVERNOR DAUDA LAWAL'S SECURITY DRIVE: STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NIGERIAN AIR FORCE FOR A SAFER ZAMFARA

The challenge of insecurity has remained one of the most pressing concerns confronting Zamfara State over the years. Banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities have threatened the peace, economic prosperity, and social well-being of communities across the state. Since assuming office, Governor Dauda Lawal has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing these security challenges through strategic collaboration with security agencies and the implementation of people-oriented policies aimed at restoring peace and stability.

Central to the Governor’s security agenda is the recognition that security is a collective responsibility requiring strong cooperation between government institutions and security agencies. This understanding has guided his administration’s sustained support for the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), whose operations have played a critical role in degrading criminal networks and providing aerial support to ground operations across Zamfara and the wider North-West region.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s recent visit to personnel of the Nigerian Air Force at Gusau International Airport underscores his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices being made by military personnel in the line of duty. The visit was not merely ceremonial; it served as a morale booster for officers and men who continue to risk their lives daily to defend innocent citizens and protect the territorial integrity of the nation. Such gestures reflect the Governor’s belief that security personnel deserve recognition, encouragement, and support from both government and society.

The Nigerian Air Force has become an indispensable partner in the ongoing fight against insecurity in Zamfara State. Through intelligence gathering, surveillance missions, and precision air operations, NAF has significantly enhanced efforts to dismantle criminal hideouts and disrupt the activities of bandits operating in remote locations. These interventions have contributed immensely to improving security conditions and creating an environment conducive to development.

Governor Lawal has consistently emphasized that security remains the foundation upon which meaningful development can be built. Without peace and stability, investments cannot thrive, businesses cannot prosper, and communities cannot achieve their full potential. Consequently, his administration has prioritized collaboration with security agencies through logistical support, intelligence sharing, and regular engagement with relevant stakeholders to strengthen security architecture across the state.

Beyond military operations, the Governor’s approach recognizes the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity. His administration continues to invest in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and youth empowerment programmes designed to provide economic opportunities and reduce vulnerability to criminal influences. This comprehensive strategy reflects an understanding that sustainable peace requires both security interventions and socio-economic development.

The partnership between the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Air Force demonstrates what can be achieved when government institutions and security agencies work together toward a common objective. Through coordinated efforts, several communities that were previously affected by insecurity have witnessed improvements in safety, allowing residents to return to their farms, businesses, and daily activities with renewed confidence.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s commendation of Nigerian Air Force personnel also serves as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces. Many officers and men spend extended periods away from their families while operating under difficult and dangerous conditions to ensure the safety of others. Their dedication, courage, and patriotism remain worthy of national recognition and gratitude.

As Zamfara State continues its journey toward lasting peace and development, the government’s partnership with the Nigerian Air Force will remain crucial. Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration is determined to sustain this collaboration, strengthen security operations, and support initiatives that promote peace and stability. With continued commitment from all stakeholders, there is growing hope that Zamfara will overcome the challenges of insecurity and emerge as a safer, more prosperous state for present and future generations.
