Inclusive Growth and Hope for All: An Independence Day Message from the Department of Special Programmes, Faskari LGEA
Since Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the story of people with special needs has been marked by both struggles and progress. In the early years, many learners with disabilities were left out of formal education because there were no policies, no trained teachers, and very few support services. Families and voluntary groups carried most of the burden, and many children were denied the chance to learn and grow.
Over time, however, the government began to intervene. The National Policy on Education recognized the rights of children with disabilities to schooling. The Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme made education free and compulsory for all. More recently, the signing of the Disability Act (2018) and the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities have been strong steps toward ensuring equal rights, accessibility, and opportunities. These are clear successes worth celebrating.
Yet, we cannot ignore the setbacks that remain—shortage of trained teachers, limited assistive devices, and schools that are not yet fully inclusive. These challenges remind us that the journey is not finished. But with continuous government commitment, community support, and the resilience of people with special needs themselves, we see hope for a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow.
It is on this background that the Department of Special Programmes, Faskari Local Government Education Authority, was created—to ensure that learners with special needs in our communities are recognized, supported, and given equal opportunities to thrive.
Today, as we celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day, we proudly say:
“Happy Independence Day to all people with special needs. You are an important part of our nation’s freedom story, our strength, and our future. Together, we move forward in unity, inclusion, and hope.”
