Yobe Deploys 1,886 Trained Forest Guards to Support War Against Boko Haram — Security Adviser

The Yobe State Government says no fewer than 1,886 trained forest guards have been recruited, armed and deployed to support ongoing military operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the state. The Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Government, Brig Gen Dahiru Abdulsalam,(rtd), disclosed this during an interview with defence correspondents in Damaturu on TuesdayHe said the deployment of the forest guards was aimed at complementing the efforts of troops of Operation HADIN KAI, local hunters and other security agencies in blocking operational gaps exploited by terrorists across remote communities and forest corridors.
According to him, Yobe has remained at the forefront of the insurgency since the emergence of the extremist movement in Kanama in 2003, when the group was initially referred to as the “Nigerian Taliban,” before the full-scale insurgency began in 2009.He explained that the insurgency intensified in Yobe from 2011, forcing the state government at the time to shoulder a significant part of the operational burden, including payment of troop allowances, logistics support, rations and provision of operational vehicles.
“From 2011 to 2015, the state government solely supported many aspects of the operation because the initial federal attention was largely concentrated on Borno State,” he said. The adviser noted that the military campaign had evolved over the years from Joint Task Force Restore Order to Operation Zaman Lafiya, Operation Lafiya Dole and now Operation HADIN KAI, with each transformation aimed at injecting new operational energy into the counterinsurgency campaign.
He identified seven local government areas in Yobe East Senatorial District — Gulani, Gujba, Damaturu, Tarmuwa, Bursari, Yusufari and Geidam — as the areas most affected by insurgent activities due to their proximity to Borno State and trans-border routes linked to Chad, Niger and Cameroon.According to him, Boko Haram elements mostly infiltrate Yobe from neighbouring areas in Borno to carry out attacks before retreating.
“Apart from the Bulabulin Forest in Yusufari Local Government Area, where there is a known Boko Haram presence, there are no major insurgent camps inside Yobe State,” he stated.
The adviser praised the military, Department of State Services (DSS), hunters and vigilante groups for their coordinated efforts in containing insurgent movements and logistics supply chains.
He said the hunters’ groups had become highly effective due to operational exposure and collaboration with the military, enabling them to conduct deep pe*******on operations into terrorist enclaves. They now carry out stealth operations disguised as traders or locals, strike Boko Haram elements and safely return. They have recorded tremendous successes,” he said.
He also credited the current Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for supporting community-based security initiatives.
According to him, Oluyede personally sponsored about 200 local hunters by providing logistics, allowances, feeding and operational equipment to strengthen security coverage in vulnerable areas. The adviser stressed that the vast terrain of Yobe made it impossible for conventional troops alone to effectively dominate all vulnerable areas, making the support of hunters and forest guards indispensable.
He said the newly recruited forest guards had already been armed, placed on salary structures and deployed to support surveillance and combat operations in identified flashpoints.
He added that the state government also maintains welfare support for families of fallen security volunteers and local hunters assisting the military.According to him, families of slain personnel receive immediate financial support, healthcare coverage and empowerment programmes, while qualified dependants are considered for employment opportunities within state agencies.

Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam Rtd witnessed a significant milestone at the passing-out ceremony of 744 clients from the Operation SAFE CORRIDOR Rehabilitation Camp in Gombe State, marking another major step in Nigeria’s ongoing peace-building and reintegration efforts.
The ceremony reflects the success of the Operation SAFE CORRIDOR initiative, a strategic programme designed to rehabilitate, deradicalize, and reintegrate former insurgents back into society as responsible and productive citizens. The 744 graduates have undergone months of comprehensive training, including vocational skills development, psychological counseling, religious reorientation, and civic education.
In his remarks, Brig Gen Dahiru Abdulsalam commended the dedication of the instructors, stakeholders, and security agencies involved in the programme.
He emphasized that the initiative remains a critical non-kinetic approach in addressing insecurity, promoting reconciliation, and fostering long-term stability in the country.
He further urged the graduates to embrace their new path, contribute positively to their communities, and uphold the values instilled in them during the rehabilitation process.
The event underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable peace, national unity, and inclusive development, while giving renewed hope for a more secure and harmonious Nigeria.

The Yobe State Government has commended officers and soldiers of 241 Recce Model Battalion for professionalism and effective operations in sustaining security across the state.

The commendation was given by Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdussala (rtd.), Special Adviser to Gov. Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, at the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) held at the Nguru Military Barracks.

Abdussala, who was the Senior General Officer Hosting (SGOH) at the event, praised the battalion’s commitment to constitutional duties and collaboration with other security agencies under Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI.

He said the synergy had ensured that all local government areas under the battalion’s responsibility remained free from Boko Haram terrorist activities.

The special adviser also commended strangulation operations along the Kano–Nguru–Gashua Road, describing them as strategic in curbing criminal movements and enhancing public safety.

He further lauded sustained efforts to address farmer–herder clashes, cattle rustling, armed banditry and other social vices within the battalion’s area of responsibility.

According to him, the gallantry and courage displayed by the troops have contributed significantly to improved security in Yobe State and its environs.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Commanding Officer, 241 Recce Model Battalion, Col. A.T. Adeuti, welcomed officers, soldiers, families and guests to the Year 2025 WASA.

Adeuti described WASA as a historic Nigerian Army tradition that provides an opportunity for personnel and their families to unwind, foster unity and showcase cultural heritage.

He traced the origin of WASA to the era of the West African Frontier Force, when colonial authorities set aside a day for West African troops to celebrate their diverse cultures.

Adeuti said the tradition was retained after independence and adopted as a regimental activity of the Nigerian Army to strengthen cohesion with host communities.

He said the Nigerian Army, under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, continued to support WASA across formations despite ongoing operational commitments.

The commanding officer said he assumed command of the battalion on June 5, 2025, and had since made deliberate efforts to enhance operational effectiveness.

According to him, the battalion operates in support of 1 Division, Kaduna, is administered by 3 Brigade, Kano, and is operationally responsible to 27 Task Force Brigade, Buni Gari, for Operation HADIN KAI.

Adeuti said the unit’s area of responsibility covered Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru and Yusufari Local Government Areas of Yobe State.

He said forward operating bases were maintained at Jajimaji, Machina and Nguru, with frequent patrols conducted in Yusufari.

The commanding officer said the battalion had sustained dominance in its area of responsibility, ensuring all four local government areas remained free of Boko Haram terrorist activities.

He added that surveillance along the Kano–Nguru–Gashua Road had led to arrests of suspects, logistics suppliers and collaborators, who were processed through Sector 2 headquarters in Damaturu.

Adeuti said the battalion also served as the permanent Nigerian Army recruitment centre for Yobe State.

He said the unit had hosted the 89 and 90 Regular Recruit Intake, noting that the 89 intake completed training in November 2025, while the 90 intake was currently undergoing training.

He added that the battalion, being a model unit, conducted post-basic leadership and regimentation training for newly commissioned officers under Exercise Competent Officer.

Adeuti said the unit had recorded improvements in training and infrastructure and had empowered 30 widows and barracks women under the Barracks Women Empowerment Scheme launched on Dec. 4, 2025.

The event was attended by senior military officers, royal fathers, heads of sister security agencies, representatives of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), soldiers’ families and members of the press.
