On Friday, 23rd October, 2026, the Commandant, JO ODAMA, fsi+, fdc, fspsp, hosted the Group Managing Director of ARCO Group Plc, Engr. Alfred Okoigun, who delivered an Entrepreneurship Lecture titled “Entrepreneurship and National Development: Creating Opportunities, Building Wealth and Strengthening Economic Security.” The lecture underscored the critical role of entrepreneurship in job creation, wealth generation, indigenous capacity development and national security. Engr. Okoigun emphasised the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant natural resources and human potential through innovation, skills development, technological advancement and sustainable enterprise development. He further advocated stronger collaboration among government, the private sector, educational institutions and security agencies to reduce reliance on foreign expertise, enhance economic resilience and foster sustainable national development.

Earlier today, 19th October, 2026, the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja, held a bilateral meeting with the Indonesian National Institute for Resilience (NIR), Lemhannas, Indonesia.

The meeting which was held during the World Study Tour of Indonesia at the NIR-Lemhanans focused on areas of shared mandate in national security, strategic studies and leadership development.

Both institutions, which have similar mandates as apex think-tanks for national security and resilience, agreed in principle to work out modalities for an Exchange Programme covering faculty and participant exchange, joint research, and sharing of best practices in curriculum development.

The engagement is in furtherance of the vision of the Commandant, NISS, to reposition the Institute as a world-class security institution with global partnerships and international best practices.

Discussions were cordial and both sides expressed commitment to formalize the partnership in the coming weeks.

The Commandant of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), JO ODAMA, fsi+, fdc,, fspsp, MNIM, FISMPA, has been inducted as a Fellow of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (fspsp), while participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 19 (EIMC 19) were inducted as Members of the Society. The induction ceremony took place earlier today, 13th October 2026 at the Rivers Learning Centre.

The ceremony marked an important step in strengthening the relationship between intelligence, security management, and peaceful conflict resolution. It also highlighted the importance of equipping security professionals with the knowledge and skills required to manage conflicts through dialogue, negotiation, and other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

The induction further reflects the importance of integrating peacebuilding into security practice to promote lasting peace, national stability, and sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
The Institute congratulates the Commandant on this well-deserved recognition and the EIMC 19 participants on their membership of the Society. Their new affiliations represent an opportunity to deepen their contributions to peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and effective security management.

The National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Usuma Dam, Bwari, Abuja, on 12 October 2026, hosted the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 19 Crisis Management Seminar, themed “Crisis Management Strategies for Addressing Ethnic Militias and Resource Competition in Africa: Implications for National Security.”
The seminar featured the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb MUTFWANG, as the Lead Presenter. His participation was particularly significant, given Plateau State’s experiences with communal conflicts, ethnic tensions and resource-related disputes. Drawing on these realities, the Governor provided valuable perspectives on crisis management, conflict prevention and sustainable strategies for addressing security challenges associated with ethnic militias and competition over resources.
The seminar also brought together distinguished discussants and representatives of key government institutions, security agencies, research centres and conflict-resolution organisations. Deliberations explored emerging threats posed by ethnic militias, strategic security management, governance responses, community engagement, conflict resolution, and the application of technology in early warning systems and conflict monitoring.
The engagement provided a valuable platform for strategic dialogue, knowledge exchange and professional collaboration, reinforcing the imperative of coordinated, intelligence-led and community-centred approaches to effective crisis management and sustainable peace across Africa.

In furtherance of efforts to strengthen community relations and institutional cooperation, the Commandant, National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), JO ODAMA fsi+, fdc, accompanied by some Directors, earlier today paid a historic courtesy visit to the Esu Bwari, HRH Dr. Ibrahim Yaro.
The Commandant introduced the Institute and highlighted its mandate, noting that the visit underscored the importance of sustained engagement and collaboration with the traditional institution of its host community.
Welcoming the delegation, the Esu Bwari expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as historic, being the first by a serving Commandant of the Institute to the Palace. His Royal Highness reaffirmed the Chiefdom’s commitment to collaborating with NISS and other security agencies towards strengthening security in Bwari Area Council and Nigeria at large.
The visit concluded with the Commandant presenting a complimentary souvenir to His Royal Highness.

The Commandant, National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), JO ODAMA fsi+, fdc, accompanied by some Directors of the Institute, earlier today paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman, Bwari Area Council, Hon. Ishaku Isah.
During the engagement, the Commandant highlighted the Institute’s mandate and emphasised the importance of strengthening community relations and fostering closer collaboration between NISS and the Area Council for enhanced security.
In his response, the Chairman appreciated the visit and commended the Institute’s contributions, alongside other security agencies, towards sustaining peace and security in Bwari and its environs. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to consolidating the existing cordial relationship with the Institute.

The Commandant of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), JO ODAMA fsi+, fdc, today, 6 October 2026, received a delegation from the Bwari Area Council Youth Development Association on a courtesy visit to the Institute.
The delegation, led by the Association’s President, Comrade Dr. J. H. AWOYI BWARI, Ph.D., commended the Commandant’s leadership and offered prayers for a successful, impactful, and people-centred tenure. Dr. Bwari further assured the Institute of the Association’s unwavering commitment to supporting and collaborating with NISS in areas of mutual interest.
In his response, the Commandant expressed his sincere appreciation to the delegation for the visit and goodwill. The Director of Research, Estimates and Library Services, R. A. Bolarinwa, fsi+, led Syndicate 4 of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 19 of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) on a courtesy visit to the Turkish Gendarmerie General Command as part of its study tour of Türkiye.
The delegation was received by Brigadier General Murat Evren, Director of Strategy and Foreign Relations, who briefed the delegation on the mandate and functions of the Command. While acknowledging the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Türkiye, he highlighted key areas of potential collaboration between the Command and NISS, including the exchange of training programmes on counter-terrorism, transnational organised crime, irregular migration, cybersecurity, research and intelligence analysis, as well as the sharing of expertise and technical assistance.
The delegation expressed its appreciation for the warm reception accorded to it and reiterated the existing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Türkiye. It further noted that enhanced collaboration between the Turkish Gendarmerie General Command and NISS would contribute significantly to strengthening the ties and promoting mutual cooperation in the field of security. Today, Tuesday 2nd September, 2025, NISS, Abuja Commandant, JO ODAMA fsi+, fdc welcomed Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-BAGUDU to the Institute. Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu, who is the President-Elect of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Special Adviser to the Honourable Minister of Health, and the founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), delivered a lecture for the ongoing Annual Global Health Security Module. Her lecture addressed this year's EIMC 18 sub theme "A Focus on Non-State Actors: Implications for Health Security and Management in Africa".
