SITUATION REPORT ON EMERGENCY GBV INTERVENTION

On 6 September 2026, the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, received a complaint from one of its members, Comrade Catherine Obeha, Executive Director, Keene Tansi for Women and Children Development Initiatives, concerning a female survivor admitted at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital with serious medical complications.

The attending medical team recommended a blood transfusion as necessary for her recovery; however, her father-in-law initially refused to give consent, citing religious beliefs. When contacted, the survivor's husband also supported his father's position.

The TWG on GBV immediately intervened and engaged the family through counselling and dialogue, with the involvement of relevant traditional and religious leaders. Following extensive engagement and sensitisation, the father-in-law and husband agreed to allow the recommended blood transfusion, enabling the survivor to receive the required medical intervention.

Conclusion:
The incident highlights the urgent need for continued community sensitisation on women's and children's right to healthcare and the importance of addressing harmful misconceptions that may endanger lives. Stakeholders must remain vigilant and strengthen referral, advocacy, and emergency intervention mechanisms to prevent avoidable loss of life.

On 30 August 2026, the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, responded to a case involving a 17-year-old orphan from Dunbegu Community, Jega LGA, who became pregnant following alleged sexual violence and has since delivered a baby boy.

The TWG provided emergency support, including clothing and essential items for the mother and newborn, financial assistance towards outstanding medical bills and other humanitarian assistance.

The case is before the High Court, Birnin Kebbi, while the alleged perpetrator is reportedly in custody awaiting trial.

The survivor and her newborn still require continued support, including postnatal care, food, psychosocial support, safe living arrangements where necessary, and legal and referral assistance.

The intervention demonstrates the TWG on GBV’s commitment to survivor-centred protection, dignity, recovery and access to justice.

WALIN YAURI SPEAKS AGAINST FORCED MARRIAGE

Walin Yauri, Alhaji Usman Ahmed, has spoken out against forced marriage, warning that it can contribute to domestic violence and, in some cases, su***de among young girls.

He made the remarks on 29 August 2026 in Yauri, Kebbi State, during a one-day capacity-building training organised by the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG-GBV), Kebbi State.

The training, led by Comrade Nasir Idris, focused on strengthening stakeholders’ capacity in GBV prevention, response, referral and accountability.

The message is clear: protecting young girls from violence and harmful practices requires collective action.

Families, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, government institutions and civil society organisations all have important roles to play in preventing Gender-Based Violence and ensuring that survivors receive the support they need.

A safer community begins with awareness, responsibility and respect for the dignity and future of every young girl.

Walin Yauri, Usman Ahmed, Calls for Decisive Action Against Gender-Based Violence

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG-GBV), Kebbi State, held a one-day capacity-building training in Yauri on 29th August 2026. Led by Comrade Nasir Idris, the programme brought together medical experts, CSOs, Police, Civil Defence, Hisbah, religious and traditional leaders, legal practitioners and DSS.

Speaking at the event, the Walin Yauri, Usman Ahmed, called for decisive and collective action to combat gender-based violence, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to protect survivors and ensure perpetrators are held accountable. The training strengthened stakeholders’ capacity for effective GBV prevention, response, referral, collaboration and accountability.

TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP ON GBV KEBBI STATE STRENGTHENS STAKEHOLDERS CAPACITY IN YAURI.

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, on 29 August 2026, conducted a one-day capacity-building training at Duba Global Hotel, Yauri, focused on strengthening GBV prevention, response, referral pathways, and accountability. The programme was organised and supported by the Office of Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, First Lady of Kebbi State, in collaboration with the TWG on GBV.

The training brought together key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, DSS, Hisbah, medical experts, legal practitioners, CSOs, religious leaders, and traditional institutions, including the Walin Yauri. Led by the TWG Secretary, Comrade Nasiru Idris, the engagement enhanced participants’ knowledge, strengthened inter-agency coordination and referral mechanisms, and promoted effective protection, support, and access to justice for GBV survivors.

The programme reaffirmed stakeholders’ collective commitment to preventing and responding effectively to GBV across Yauri Emirate and Kebbi State.

Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, Visits a Four (4)-Year-Old R**e Survivor in Bunza LGA

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, visited a four (4)-year-old girl, a survivor of r**e, in Bunza Local Government Area on Saturday, 1st August 2026.

The team was led to Bunza by the Secretary of the Group, Comrade Nasiru Idris, representing Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, the First Lady of Kebbi State and Chairperson of the TWG on GBV, Kebbi State. The purpose of the visit was to assess the condition of the minor, who was r**ed about seven months ago and subsequently underwent intensive medical treatment and multiple surgical operations at Maryam Abacha Hospital, Sokoto.

During the visit, the team presented food items, school supplies, a mattress, other essential materials, and a cash donation of ₦100,000 to the survivor. The support was aimed at helping her continue her education, return to a normal childhood, ease the impact of her trauma, and support her ongoing medical care and nutritional needs.

The TWG on GBV also assured the family of its continued monitoring, support, and commitment to the survivor's welfare, recovery, and overall well-being.

TWG on GBV KEBBI STATE REUNITED A SURVIVOR WITH HER FAMILY .

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, successfully reunited a survivor with her family after providing comprehensive care at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Kalgo on 07/07/2026. Led by Comrade Nasiru Idris, and 3 others, the team first met the Hakimin Zaguru, Alhaji Muhammadu Ardo, to brief him on the survivor's rescue, ongoing court case, and the need to protect her from stigma and further abuse. The survivor, who conceived through r**e and later gave birth under the courtesy of the free medical care of Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu(the First Lady, Kebbi State), the chairperson TWG ON GBV Kebbi State. The Survivor was reunited with her biological father and her family in Zuguru, while her five-year-old son was also handed over to his biological father with advice to care for him responsibly, considering the survivor's new responsibilities as the mother of a newborn.

TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE , KEBBI STATE VISITS MOTHER AND NEWBORN BABY AT SARC, KALGO MEDICAL CENTRE

On 1st June 2026 at 11:05 a.m., the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Kebbi State, paid a visit to a survivor and her newly born baby at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Kalgo Medical Centre. The survivor had been brought to the Kalgo Medical Centre approximately two weeks earlier following a distress call from the Birnin Kebbi Local Government Social Welfare Director.Upon arrival, medical personnel confirmed that she was in the early stage of labour and expected to deliver within two weeks. Since then, she has remained under the care and support of the TWG at the SARC.
During the visit, the TWG presented the mother and her newborn with essential baby and delivery items provided through the support of the TWG under the able leadership of Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu The first lady kebbi state and chairperson TWG on GBV. Members present during the visit included Comrade Nasiru Idris (Secretary, TWG), who led the delegation, Abdulmumin Musa Omiya (PRO), Hajiya Maryam Kaoje( Member), and Balkisu (SARC Staff). It is important to note that the survivor's accommodation, medical care, and welfare at the SARC have been provided free of charge as usual through the support and intervention of the TWG.
The survivor's case is still before the court, and the TWG remains committed to ensuring that justice is served against the perpetrator responsible for impregnating the survivor.
The TWG also expressed its sincere appreciation to the dedicated healthcare personnel at the Kalgo Medical Centre for their professionalism, compassion, and firm commitment in supporting the survivor throughout her pregnancy and safe delivery.

Ministry of Women Affairs Hands Over GBV Shelter Administration to Kebbi State Technical Working Group

June 15, 2026 In a significant step toward strengthening protection and support services for vulnerable persons in Kebbi State, the Ministry of Women Affairs has officially handed over the full administration and management of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Shelter to the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence.

The handover, which took place on Monday, June 15, 2026, was carried out under the directive of Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, the First Lady of Kebbi State and Chairperson of the Technical Working Group on GBV.

The GBV Shelter, widely regarded as a long-awaited intervention in the state, represents a major milestone in efforts to provide protection, care, and rehabilitation services for survivors of gender-based violence and other vulnerable individuals. As the first facility of its kind in Kebbi State, the shelter is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the needs of those facing various forms of abuse, neglect, displacement, and social vulnerabilities.

According to Comrd Nasiru Idris the secretary of the TWG on GBV, the shelter will serve as a temporary safe haven for survivors and vulnerable persons, offering them protection, psychosocial support, counseling, and other essential services before they are safely reunited with their families or integrated into appropriate support systems.

Individuals who may require temporary accommodation at the shelter include survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, r**e, child abuse, forced marriage, trafficking, abandonment, family disputes, marital misunderstandings, emotional abuse, neglect, and other situations that place their safety, well-being, or dignity at risk. The facility will also support vulnerable women, children, and other individuals who require urgent protection and assistance during periods of crisis.

TWG on GBV Concludes Successful Treatment of Four (4)-Year-Old Sexual Violence Survivor in Kebbi State

Birnin Kebbi, June 10, 2026 – The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence , under the leadership of Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, First Lady of Kebbi State and Chairperson of the TWG on GBV, has successfully concluded the medical treatment of a four(4)-year-old survivor of sexual violence from Bunza Local Government Area after six months of intensive medical care and surgery.

The young survivor was brutally assaulted on January 16, 2026, in Bunza LGA. According to reports, she was found unconscious in an uncompleted building near her residence, lying in a pool of blood in a quiet and sparsely populated area. Medical examinations later revealed that she had suffered severe injuries, including extensive damage to her vegina as a result of the assault.

The case was initially reported to the Bunza Police Station and subsequently referred to Maitella Tara Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in Kalgo for medical assessment and intervention. Following a thorough examination, the Director and Medical Consultant of Maitella Tara SARC, Dr. Nuradden Muhammad, recommended an urgent referral to Maryam Abacha Hospital in Sokoto for specialized treatment.

Upon receiving a briefing on the survivor’s critical medical condition, Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu immediately intervened and assumed full responsibility for the child's treatment. This included covering all medical expenses, transportation costs, and other related needs throughout the treatment process.

After undergoing several months of specialized medical care and surgical procedures at Maryam Abacha Hospital, Sokoto, the survivor has made a full recovery. Medical experts have confirmed that she has regained her health and strength and is now expected to return to school and resume normal childhood activities.
