*PRESS STATEMENT*

REJECTION OF THE ARREST OF STUDENTS PROTESTING INSECURITY AND KIDNAPPING IN EKPOMA

The Nigeria Student and Youth Association (NISAYA) strongly condemns and totally rejects the recent arrest of students in Ekpoma who were peacefully protesting against the alarming rate of insecurity and kidnapping in the town.

We find it deeply troubling that students who courageously exercised their constitutional right to peaceful protest were met with arrest instead of protection. These student were not criminals, troublemakers, or political agitators. They were simply concerned citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in response to the continuous threat to lives and property in Ekpoma, particularly the growing cases of abduction of students, residents and business owners.

Peaceful protest remains a legitimate and lawful means of civic engagement in any democratic society. Criminalizing such actions only discourages youth participation, suppresses legitimate grievance, and diverts attention from the real issue the urgent need to address insecurity in Ekpoma and its environs. We maintain that protest against insecurity is not a crime; it is a patriotic duty.

We therefore demand:

The immediate and *unconditional release of all arrested students.

*An end to the harassment and intimidation of students and youth activists in Ekpoma.

*A proactive and visible security response to curb kidnapping and criminal activities in the town.

*A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrests.

We call on the Edo State Government, security agencies, school authorities, civil society organizations, and the general public to rise in defense of students’ rights and to work collectively towards restoring peace and security in Ekpoma.

The Nigerian student and youth population must not be silenced for speaking up. Their voices are essential to building a safer and more accountable society.

NISAYA remains committed to peaceful advocacy, youth protection, and the defense of students’ right across the South South region and Nigeria at large.
