Next Generation Kids University Every Child Deserves an Opportunity for Life & Education In a great number of cases, over 90% of children from very poor families end up been poor.

Next Generation Kids University– A business and leadership school for kids
The Next Generation Academy is an interventionist educational organization that seeks to break the cycle of poverty amongst generations of poor and disadvantaged families. That not only perpetuates the cycle of poverty in these family units but creates a societal problem of integration and development in generations to come

. Education remains one of the most potent force for the eradication of poverty, but amongst children of poor families where children are sent to school, due to poor Government funding, the quality is barely able to cause a shift in the lives of these children. Even where the quality of education is such that should ordinarily result in a change of mental circuitry, children from poor families have additional non cognitive behaviors to contend with which could make them drop out of school, or where they continue, they do so with very poor self-image that impedes their ability to compete with children from rich homes. Generally speaking, a majority of children from very poor families are likely to suffer from one or more of the non-cognitive behavioral traits below:
• Self-efficacy – Belief in one’s own ability
• Need for achievement – Desire to do well
• Risk taking – Predisposition towards risky alternatives
• Social Orientation – Ability to make useful connections
• Persistence – Ability to continue despite setbacks
• Motivating – Ability to inspire or stimulate subordinates
• Analyzing – Ability to assess complex situations
• Pro – activity – Willingness to take action
• Creativity – Ability to generate many alternatives

To be effective, an interventionist program that is capable of breaking the cycle of poverty amongst poor family units is best suited for persons under the age of 12. A number of brain and psychological studies have found interventionist programs aimed at addressing the issues outlined above to be most effective between the ages of 8 and 11. Successful outcomes for humans is largely about brain wiring, and much of the foundational wiring for successful outcomes in life is already accomplished by the time a child is 12 years old. Harvard professor Jack Shonkoff explains the importance of good circuitry formation in the formative years, in his words “ Brains are built over time. At birth they already have most of their cells, but very little of the circuitry is built……. The circuits come in on a very strict schedule and how these circuits get established is highly influenced by experience. It never goes back to rewire, if it builds healthy circuits, you are all set, but any faults are built in for life”. Professor Jack Shonkoff recommends that interventions should be made as early as possible. Rolnick and Grunwald, professors of economics and former directors at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank recommend that early growth interventions should be regarded as investments in economic development. Using a complex set of economic tools, Rolnick and Grunwald have demonstrated that returns in early stage interventions have a public benefit of $7.16 for every dollar spent and an internal rate of return of 16%. To fight poverty in the US, President Lyndon Baines Johnson helped create the Federal Head Start program targeting 3 & 4 year olds living in poverty, providing emotional, health, nutritional, social and parent support services. 40 years after the program was launched more than a million have been affected by it. How the Academy works
The academy’s work is like an agricultural genetically modifying seed program. The academies will be:
1. Located within the vicinities perceived to be economically disadvantaged.
2. It will be fully boarding
3. It will establish links with the local primary schools within disadvantaged communities
4. It will admit from amongst pupils of primary 5 & 6 only
5. Maximum student enrolment will be 50 per training cycle
6. Duration of training will be intensive 4 weeks
7. Students will be provided with all necessary clothing and uniform during their stay at the academy – Literarily EVERYTHING they need including uniforms and after school clothing which they will take home with them upon completion of the program.
8. The learning environment will be world class to give the students a huge contrast to their living environment – a huge mental shock.
9. The course content will be largely entrepreneurial and leadership; but students will be made to undertake the regular lessons required of them in their regular classes.
10. The facilitators will be made up of seasoned professional icons who are willing to develop these kids. These facilitators will be all volunteers. The target is to have 80% academic faculty of volunteers who come on a need basis. Philosophy of Next Generation Kids University
What good is it to send economically disadvantaged kids to a world class school for 3 weeks and return them to the poor neighborhood from which they were taken in the first place. The purpose is aptly covered in a psychology phrase coined by Robert Fritz as “Structural Creative Tension” in his book, “The path of least Resistance for Managers” published in 1999. Fritz thesis was that once the brain was exposed to a higher reality, a tension is created between our current reality and a desired reality. It is the brain’s effort to close this gap that unleashes a natural determination and persistence in time in the subconscious. The tension and neural fight to close this ‘gap’ is the experience that places the brain in a two world reality. To borrow Robert Fritz in his own language, ..”the power of structural tension, which is what I named this form, is that the difference between the desired state and the actual state creates a powerful state of “non-equilibrium” that has a built-in dynamic, to restore equilibrium. All of nature and physics strives for states of equilibrium. Often, there isn’t a strategic dimension to the structures. Rather, things turn out to be in conflict with other things, and those conflicts fight against each other as the system strives for something it cannot achieve – equilibrium, bringing harmony to all parts of the structure. But structural tension is very strategic and deliberate. I like to use the following illustration to describe the point, which is, an archer stretching a bow, aiming the arrow at a target. The tension in the bow enables the arrow to be propelled to the target. Structural tension has the same structural dynamic, which is adequate tension generates energy toward the target: the desired outcome we want to create…. Often, as part of current reality, there isn’t enough time or money to accomplish the goal by traditional means. So, the mind begins to work out just how you might be able to create this outcome in non-conventional ways. This dynamic is the root of innovation. Creativity is motivated by the structure, and the mind targets the process by generating useful ways to get where you want to go within the means you have available …… the mind is working to create resolution to the tension that’s been created. It comes up with focused and useful ideas. The second way that structural tension enables you to create is by generating energy in the action steps you will need to take. Rather than pushing boulders uphill, you are working with the forces in play, often creating an economy of means, and elegance of process. You don’t have to manipulate yourself into action. You are highly motivated to act.” Another principle that’s probably contributing to the usefulness of creative tension is the Zeigarnik Effect, which says that when we have an unresolved question or problem, we continue holding that problem in our minds – sometimes only unconsciously. A number of authors have in separate literatures explained how the structural creative process works. These include Peter Senge, author of ‘The fifth discipline’, Dan Coyle, author of the ‘The talent Code’ and Betty Edward author of ‘Drawing on the right side of the brain’ amongst several others.

Today’s BEING class on Office Romance was quite engaging. For those who were unable to attend the class, the recording is available at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89ZyNQluyLs

The class will support any listener to the signposts to pay heed to when contemplating or already involved in an office romance. Better still, the discussions will significantly help organizations formulate effective anti-fraternization employment laws, support those caught up in unpleasant fallouts from such relationships, and manage the situations in which they find themselves.
The recording is highly recommended for HR Leads to share with their organizations on best practices that can help members of the organization better harness the possibilities that are available in any office romance.

BEING in Relationships – 1
In today’s Zoom webinar, we received a question from someone who is not a student in our regular weekly BEING meetings, but wanted assistance with what members of the class thought. The statement she sent was:
“Nothing hurts a wife like giving your husband advice, he ignores it, …… then hears the exact same thing from friends and family, and suddenly, it is a brilliant advice!”
The discussion featured views from professionals of both sexes and received fair and rigorous scrutiny from a BEING perspective.
Since the close of the webinar today, there have been numerous requests for the recording link of the discussion and we have decided to share it here to as many as may be interested in hearing the BEING perspective.

Choosing Your BEING without Any Conditions
You can create yourself into any desired BEING without any condition. You do not need to await the completion of any academic degree to choose any state of BEING. You do not need to wait for time. No time is not needed in choosing who you want to BE at any given moment. All of these states of existence are all simultaneously available. All that is required of you is to choose the one you want to BE. You simultaneously exist as wealthy and poor, sick and healed, expert and novice, employed and unemployed, all that you need to do is choose your desired state of BEING.
There are no conditions. What do you want to experience that your mind tells you, you need to have another citizen or skin colour for? All states of BEING are already in existence, infinite. Yours is to choose the one you wish to be in (BEING).
In our weekly Zoom webinar coming up this Saturday, 26th April, 2025, at 7am, we will be taking a dive into BEING, without waiting for time or any conditions.

To participate in this session, kindly send an email to [email protected]

DAY 5 OF THE 100DAYS SELF-REINVENTION SERIES.

‘‘We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are” - Anais Nim

The Principle of Separate Realities

The greatest error in our understanding of life is that there is only one reality at any given time in each situation. Even in politics, there isn't any single interpretation of reality. If you want to be successful in relationships of any kind, you have to go beyond tolerating people; you have to understand that in any given situation and event, there are millions of realities created by the millions of persons observing the event.
The Principle of Separate Realities simply says that no two individuals have the same reality of any given event. Amateur counselors are amazed when they listen to people in dispute and hear different narrations on the same issue in dispute. We live in separate silos of thoughts that we have created that we call reality. Our default thinking should be to expect that people will see things differently from the way we do. I can see that if we could rewire our brains to this position, we would have eliminated over 50% of the difficulties experienced in relationships. This simple mental reset will bring a lot of love and understanding into our day-to-day conversations. It will remove a lot of the ego we bring into conversations and help us forge better and more lasting relationships. When people travel to foreign countries, they immerse themselves in experiencing the new culture and seeing the amazing differences in the people, places, and food. We ought to likewise watch people who are close to us, colleagues at work or spouses with that same awe and fun when they express their reality in any given situation. Our ability to do this will significantly transform any relationship. “There is nothing either good or bad in itself, but thinking makes it so.” William Shakespeare, Hamlet Romans 14:14: “I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him, it is unclean.”
In Shakespeare's Hamlet, when Hamlet calls Denmark a prison, he is mentally and physically confined by the gaze of the king and his agents, and he feels trapped in the court's general degradation—"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," he moans; but he is just a prisoner of his own thinking. How many people have pronounced their jobs, situations, or life in general a prison when all they are seeing is their thinking?
The greatest pain we can experience in life isn't the lack of money; it is the painful meanings we give to the events of our lives. We experience pain because our meanings of everyday events do not line up with our expectations of life or beliefs. When we expect that there will be no traffic and we come across traffic on our way to work, we begin to cuss and get stressed out. The reality is that the traffic is just made of some inanimate objects called cars, with no power to make any meaning or get anyone stressed. Some other person in the same traffic is rejoicing because he needed the traffic to slow him down as he was arriving for a scheduled place of meeting too early. The traffic has nothing to do with the life experience of any of these persons. They gave it whatever meaning, depending on their internal beliefs or expectations. “You're never feeling your circumstances. You're always feeling your thinking, which, independent of your circumstances, is constantly in a state of flux. This explains why a circumstance can look troubling one moment and okay the next. Knowing that your feelings come from the inside (your thinking), and not the outside (your circumstances), is what allows your state of mind to self-correct when you are troubled.” – Garret Kramer, Sports Psychologist.
When you allow life to be what it is without attaching a narrative to it, suffering is diminished because you cease to oppose what is. As meaning-makers, we do it without knowing. We make meanings and compare these meanings to beliefs that are deeply ingrained in our souls. Age-old customs of what we should get in certain situations suddenly seem not to line up with the current meanings we are making, and we become terrified. The day of liberation will come when you realize that the belief that is not in tandem with your current situation was put there by you, and if it was put there by you, you can remove or amend it. In a world of rational thinking, this is just bread, but we often fail in BEING HUMAN. As an engineer, I know when to impose constraints on a design and when to remove these constraints or boundaries. If I am doing an analysis where the constraints will not serve my purpose, I remove them, even if for the purpose of the analysis. Once you realize that a belief is not serving your HAPPINESS, you can remove it. Although it is sometimes difficult when you are HUMAN to know what is going on, you can at the end of every day or week or month or when the occasion demands PROCESS LIFE.
We all know how we process orders or how a computer processes information. As occasion demands and at the end of a stressful day, take some time to process the events of the day and how you interpreted them. With this new toolkit, STEP OUT OF YOURSELF and process the day. As you do it repeatedly, you will begin to see that you are catching yourself more frequently in previous acts that were damaging your mental health. Your mental health begins to heal, and you will begin to be more present in your life and begin experiencing a more fulfilling life.
In Romans 14, Paul begins to explain to the Romans why it is inappropriate to pass judgments on one about certain conduct. “One person BELIEVES that eating vegetables is good but gets stressed out when he sees his brother eating meat because he believes that eating meat is bad. Another BELIEVES is that Monday is superior to Saturday and so on. Then he gets to verse 14 and says I am convinced……… that nothing is unclean of itself, except what thinking makes it.”
The reason there is a panel of judges in a subjective competition like a beauty contest is that each of the judges is comparing what they see with what they believe to be beauty. So, at the end of the competition, the contestant with the highest number of judges with INTERNAL beliefs agreeing with what they are seeing becomes the winner. Otherwise, all the contestants were NEUTRALLY EQUALLY BEAUTIFUL until we brought the ruler of our beliefs into play.

A Sunday with Aliko Dangote

By ETIM ETIM

I was one of the 102 senior journalists invited from all over the country to tour the Dangote Fertilizer and Petrochemical Refinery Complex last Sunday and it turned out to be an unbelievably humbling and revealing experience. Unmistakably visible to us was the power of vision, determination to succeed in the face of many hurdles one man’s love for country. We were reminded that it is only we, Nigerians, that will develop our; but not some mythical ‘foreign investors’ that our leaders have been looking for. The visit lasted 11 hours during which we went around every corner of the massive complex, occupying 2,635 hectares of land (seven times the size of Victoria Island, Lagos). It is located in the Dangote Industries Free Zone (different from Lekki Free Zone which is owned by the Lagos state government). In all, we probably covered most of the 112 km of road network crisscrossing the vast compound (some journalists termed it ‘The Dangote Planet’), walking and being driven. On hand to lead the tour were Aliko Dangote himself (Group President); Edwin Devakumar (Group Vice President, Oil & Gas) and Fatima Dangote (Group Executive Director, Commercial).

Dangote informed us that the fertilizer, petrochemical and refinery business would be quoted on the stock exchange on or before the first quarter of 2025 in what could be one of the biggest IPOs in recent years; that the NNPCL has only 7.2% stake in the refinery, not 20% as stated previously ‘’Although we had offered them 20%, they could not pay for all of that and so we had to reduce it to 7.2% which they paid for’’, he said matter-of-factly. He spoke on the politics and economics of crude oil supply from the NNPCL; the $100 million payment to Lagos state government; his encounters with shrines during construction and the role of Ooni of Ife; why he did not build the refinery in the Niger Delta region which is the nation’s hydrocarbon base and why Ogun State lost out as the initial location choice; why he has no home outside Nigeria and his plans to reconstruct the Lekki expressway. He also announced that the company will soon move into its 18-storey towers on Alfred Rewane Road, Ikoyi, not far from its current location.

We arrived the refinery complex about 9.30am after a two-hour ride from the corporate headquarters of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Falomo, Ikoyi. The first port of call was a facility called Land Fall Point (LFP). ‘’Twenty-five kilometers from here into the ocean, we have our three single point mooring (SPM) where ships discharge crude oil into our subsea pipes’’, Devakumar said. An SPM is a floating buoy anchored offshore that allows the handling of liquid cargo in areas where dedicated onshore facility for loading and unloading cargo is unavailable. From LFP we went to the port and quays constructed by DIL with a load bearing capacity of 25 tonnes/sq meters to bring heavy and large cargoes close to the site to handle liquid cargoes. Soon, we were off to the fertilizer plant where the pungent smell of urea welcomed us. The plant has an installed production capacity of three million tons/yr, but it’s currently producing at half the capacity due to inadequate gas supply - the same problem that is plaguing Nigeria’s electricity supply and impeding production at NLNG.

The fertilizer plant is the largest in Africa and the second largest in the world. Nigeria consumes one million tonnes of fertilizer per year; meaning that Dangote is able to meet local demand and while excess is exported to USA, Brazil and other places.

From the fertilizer plant, we dashed to the conference room where Dangote gave detailed and comprehensive briefings on his businesses, right from its inception, detailing his transition from commodity trading in 1978 to a well-diversified conglomerate comprising cement, crude oil and gas exploration, agriculture, fertilizer and petrochemical refinery. He appeared disarmingly simple; mild-mannered and convincing. His voice was gentle and there was no iota of indication that this was Africa’s richest man. I sat close to him, with Kayode Komolafe of Thisday (we call him KK), sitting between us. Even though I knew what the answer might be, I asked Dangote why he didn’t site the refinery in the Niger Delta. He said that would have made the investments less expensive, but he was frightened away by the volatility in the region. ‘’But Sir, Akwa Ibom State is peaceful. There’s no violence there. You should have come Akwa Ibom’’, I pushed. Others chuckled, but Dangote contemplated my pitch briefly and said, ‘’Yes. I know your governor. I saw him last week in Lagos …’’.

We left the conference room to tour the refinery, the labs and the control rooms. I didn’t know what to expect, but suffice it to say that the refinery is just a labyrinth of big pipes, running overhead in the open skies, without roofs, and on the ground and beneath the ground. It is a network of big and small pipes bending, twisting and contorting all over the place from its beginning at the Single Point Mooring 25 km offshore to the loading bay where refined products are pumped into tankers. As we walked around, I tapped Mr. Devakumar at a point and asked, ‘’Do you have an idea of the total lengths of all these pipes. I’m sure they’d run into thousands of kilometers. ‘’Yes’’, he answered. ‘’We are inviting Guinness World Records to register it’’. Dangote chipped in, ‘’They will have to come and audit it before they register and announce it’’. We continued walking. This is the world’s largest single-train refinery with capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude per day. It will meet all of our needs for refined products with enough for exports. ‘’It is a game changer’’, exclaimed Devakumar.

After the refinery, we returned to the Conference Room for more briefing, Q & A and lunch. There were questions on varied topics, including impact of energy transition on the sustainability of the refinery; title documents from Lagos state and NNPC shareholding. One cheeky journalist asked if the Dangote Refinery will also undergo the kind of turn around maintenance that government-owned refineries have been experiencing and another queried if Dangote knew why the Port Harcourt refinery has refused to work despite the billions of dollars pumped into its overhaul. The underlying mischief behind the two questions were obvious and we all had a good laugh. I asked two questions on the politics of supply of crude oil to the refinery by the NNPCL and whether he will take the refinery to the capital market. I had earlier made a note to ask Dangote about his relationship with the Tinubu administration given the dramatic and embarrassing visits from the EFCC last year. But I changed my mind and dropped the question. Dangote addressed the questions one after the other. He said fossil fuels will be around for sometime to come despite the drive for renewable energy and explained that the need for NNPCL to supply domestic refineries with crude. He is optimistic that the guidelines recently announced by the NNPCL on crude supply will make a difference, adding, ‘’I hope the IOCs will respect the guidelines. Right now, we are paying $6 premium on every barrel we buy from them, but luckily, our refinery was designed to refine different grades of crude and so we can actually buy from everywhere. But importation brings in poverty and ships out jobs’’.

He said that Lagos State government had insisted on being paid for the land in dollars and he willingly paid the $100 million price. Although the government promptly issued the title documents, construction was delayed because of community issues. ‘’You know they have a lot of shrines here…’’, he said. We laughed heartily. ’But I must thank the Ooni for his kind interventions which quickly resolved the issues’’, he added. The delay cost him $60 million in interest charges from the banks. The refinery was initially scheduled to be sited in Ogun State, but the state government had delayed in providing the land because the governor then was making unethical demands. Dangote walked away and approached Lagos State government. But the delay cost the company about $500 million in interest payments. That’s one of the negative outcomes of corruption.

By now we were all tired, but nobody complained. The mood was convivial and the conversation was interesting. The refinery currently employs 30,000 people, of which 97% are Nigerians. The figure will go up to 100,000 as productions ramps up. The plant will meet all of our domestic demands for liquid products (gasoline, diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel). Currently, it is producing diesel and aviation fuel; petrol will be pumped out next month, Dangote assures. The Group President says his refinery has been able to bring down diesel price and may also moderate petrol prices at the pump, depending on variables like source and price of crude and exchange rate. The event closed with a passionate vote of thanks from Ms. Fatima Dangote. She praised her father’s energy, commitment and love for Nigeria and thanked Nigerians for their unceasing love to daddy. We rushed back to our hotels to watch the England-Spain Euro final football game!
