Governor Monday Okpebholo Commissions Reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School in Benin

Edo State Governor, Sen Monday Okpebholo , on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, commissioned the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School, Awo Street, off First East Circular Road, Benin City, bringing to an end years of abandonment of the facility.

The governor was warmly received by jubilant students and staff of the school, who expressed gratitude to the Okpebholo-led administration for reviving what they described as a long-abandoned project and restoring hope to the learning environment.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Okpebholo said the visible improvement in staffing and infrastructure at the school was a clear indication that his administration’s intervention in the education sector was yielding results.

The governor said, “One thing that gives me joy today is the number of teachers I am seeing in this school. I remember that sometime ago when I visited, I saw just two or three teachers here. Today, I am seeing over 20 teachers, and that shows that we are in the right direction,”

He further assured the school community of government’s commitment to addressing outstanding challenges, particularly power supply.

Okpebholo added, “Just like I have said, we are going to fix the light problem in this school. We will do our best to see that we fix this place for the betterment of our children,”

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu , described the project as a clear example of “practical governance in action,” noting that the school had previously become an eyesore and a hotspot for undesirable activities.

Iyamu said, “When His Excellency came into office, this place was like an eyesore of nefarious activities. But the governor gave a clear instruction, declaring a state of emergency on schools,”

According to him, the directive was aimed at ensuring that every child in Edo State has access to education in a safe and conducive environment.

He stated, "The clear instruction was that every child in Edo State must go to school in a conducive environment. What you are seeing today is a testament of a governor who is committed and passionate about education,”

He thanked the governor on behalf of the students and the entire education sector for prioritizing school rehabilitation across the state.

A female student of the school named, Osarunwense expressed excitement over what she termed as a dilapidated structures before the governor's intervention which has changed the beauty of the school.

The commissioning of the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School is part of the Okpebholo administration’s broader agenda to revamp public schools and improve the quality of education in Edo State.

Residents Jubilate as Gov Okpebholo Inspects Key Projects Across Edo Central Senatorial District

There was jubilation, cheers and loud praise as residents poured into the streets to welcome Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, during his inspection tour of major projects across Esan West, Esan Central and Esan North East Local Government Areas.

Community members commended the governor for bringing practical governance to the grassroots, saying they are now truly feeling the dividends of democracy.

One of the major projects inspected was the Ekpoma Modern Market in Esan West, where construction has intensified, with contractors, workers and heavy equipment actively on site.

Governor Okpebholo also inspected the rebuilding of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) Shopping Complex in Ekpoma. The complex, which was destroyed by fire during a protest, is now under reconstruction, with contractors already working on over 20 burnt shops.

Residents also turned out in large numbers as the governor inspected the ongoing road and drainage construction at Ukhun Road, Eguare Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area.

In Esan Central, Governor Okpebholo and his entourage visited the Irrua–Illeh–Ukhun Road to assess the quality and specifications of work, which has reportedly reached an advanced stage.

At Esan North East, traders, motorists and residents lined the streets at the Ivue Junction axis of the Uromi–Agbor Federal Highway to cheer the governor as he inspected the long stretch of road being reconstructed by the Edo State Government.

The roads across the senatorial district are described as critical to economic development, as they will link several communities, ease transportation of farm produce and open up rural areas for trade, investment and growth.

Observers say the scale of ongoing construction reflects the Okpebholo administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, improved socio-economic activities and increased revenue generation for the state.

The governor’s unscheduled inspection visits are part of his strategy to keep contractors on their toes and ensure projects are delivered on time and to standard.
