*Traders hail Obaseki on ease of doing business, port project*

Traders in Edo State have congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki on his re-election in the September 19 election, hailing the governor for his ease of doing business reforms and the ongoing construction of the Benin River Port.

A cross-section of the traders from the International Morning Market Benin (IMMB), who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the state capital, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the waiver given to them for processing of the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) of their proposed market.

President, IMMB, Luke Abbas, said they were glad that the state government was working assiduously to meet the challenges faced by traders, noting that the provision of durable infrastructure by government would continue to create the right environment to do business in the state.

According to him: “We are hopeful that the market would be open very soon. We are appealing for government to expedite work on the road linking the market. We are happy about the Benin River Port project, as it will enhance commerce.

“Once it is completed, our containers will no longer go through Lagos. Once we finalise government support for the market, we would deploy our resources to build the market and then move in.”

Head, Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), Mr. Kelvin Uwaibi, noted that the market is a welcome development, expressing appreciation to the traders for their overwhelming support and active participation in the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Uwaibi added that the Sapele Road axis in the state capital is already transforming into an industrial area in Benin City, and assured that government is ready to welcome any positive effort that would fast- track investment to strengthen the state’s post-COVID-19 economy.

Doing Business becoming easier with Governor Godwin Obaseki as Governor

In line with World bank and Global best practices, Obaseki's reforms on Ease of Doing Business has significantly improved the ease of doing business in Edo state with the setting up of EdoGiS which has made land documentations easier as land owners are now assured that with their Certificate of Occupancy they have no reason to fear as their lands are secured. This has put a stop to the regular CDAs levies and land grabbers which has been creating problems for individuals and business owners. The Obaseki administration has also improved the security architecture in the state by providing hundreds vehicles and other equipments to the Nigerian Police Force (both on land and on our water ways) to enable them do their job which is securing lives and properties in the state, effectively. As a result of this, there has been a decline in the rate of criminal activities in the state and business are now more secured.
Another very visible area in which this administration has improved the ease of doing business in Edo State is the setting up of the small claims court. Edo state is one of the three states in Nigeria that operates small claims court in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano. The small claims court was set up to decongest the many court cases in Nigerian courts so that small business owners can resolve Thier cases faster . Example of such suits are Form SCA 1 For Letter for Demand and Form SCA 2 For Complaint etc.
The administration of Godwin Obaseki is now looking at giving soft loans to business owners to start or expand their business so that the economy of the state will boom. So the government has embarked on training youths and women in different proffession, handiwork and trades via edojobs so that they can become equipped with what to do before venturing into Business.
It's imperative to say that Edo state would have made tremendous economic Progress before 2024 if Governor Godwin Obaseki continues as Governor of Edo State.

*Obaseki deepens judicial reforms with Small Claims court*

*_…rebuilds 16 magistrate courts across Edo_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inaugurated the Edo Small Claims Court, in Benin City, to make settlement of commercial disputes seamless and fast, demonstrating the state government’s commitment to deepening Ease of Doing Business reform.

With the inauguration of the court, Edo becomes the third state in the country after Kano and Lagos States to have the Small Claims Court.

At the inauguration of the court, Obaseki said the establishment of the Small Claims Court was a way of simplifying the legal system to provide quick justice for small business owners.

The governor also unveiled the Practice Directions and Handbook of the Edo Small Claims Court.

He said in line with ongoing reforms in the state judiciary, his administration awarded contracts for the rebuilding of 16 magistrates' courts, noting that the plan was to rebuild all the magistrates’ courts in the state.

He noted, “The legal system is distant from our people because if you have a claim and you have to go through the court system, before you pay lawyers and go to courts for adjournment, sometimes the case could go as long as 5 to 10 years, and you are discouraged.

“But with the Small Claims Court, you go to the magistrates’ court close to you; you don’t need a lawyer and within 60 days you will get justice.”

Obaseki urged residents of the state to patronise the court as it was geared towards improving the ease of doing business, adding that the state would continue to improve the working condition of judges and magistrates, as a strong dispute resolution mechanism was needed for economic growth.
Edo State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Esther Edigin, said the inauguration of the Small Claims Courts would create a platform where small business owners could easily access justice in the settling of commercial disputes.

Justice Edigin explained that the entire period of proceedings in the Small Claims Courts from filing until judgement will not exceed 60 days, adding, “The Small Claims Courts are designed to resolve liquidated debts dispute of N5 million and below in a speedy, informal, inexpensive and simple manner.”

The State Chief Judge noted that the Small Claims Courts are spread across different Magisterial Districts in Edo State including Oredo, Egor, Evbuoriaria, Ogbeson, Ekiadolor, Okada, Ekpoma, Uromi, Sabongida-Ora, Auchi and Igarra.

Earlier, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Ease of Doing Business, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said access to justice is pivoted for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to grow their businesses, adding that the inauguration of the Small Claims Court in Edo State was timely.

Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Edo State Chapter, Prince Collins Ogiegbaen, commended the Edo State judiciary for inaugurating the claims court, noting that it will provide equality and social justice for the common man.

He urged that the National Assembly to enact a bill that would ensure the establishment of the court in all states of the country.

Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, said the inauguration of the court was a milestone, stressing that it will significantly improve the economy of the state in many ways, including speedy dispensation of justice.
