Anambra Ministry of Local Government Conducts 48 Elections During Christmas Period

By Romanus Udekwe Okue-Agbomma

The Anambra State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has conducted no fewer than 48 elections covering Igweship and President-General positions across various communities during the Christmas period.

Chief Tonycollins Nwabunwanne , Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, led his team to oversee the elections despite the festive season, demonstrating what observers have described as uncommon dedication to public service.

Communities where elections were conducted include Awka (President-General), Amawbia (Igwe), Enugwu-Agidi (President-General), Ndikelionwu (President-General), and Ndiowu (Igwe), among others. Several more elections are already scheduled for January 2026 and beyond.

The Enugwu-Agidi President-General election was particularly notable, with thousands of community members participating in the exercise that extended into the early hours of the morning. The ministry ensured meticulous attention to due process throughout the voting.

Chief Jonas Okoye, a public affairs commentator, confirmed that the Commissioner and his staff were at work in the ministry on December 31st, when many public servants had retired to their villages for the festive season.

Anambra State is home to approximately 179 communities and countless villages, with leadership positions often keenly contested. Leadership disputes frequently result in prolonged litigation that stalls community development and fractures unity.

The Commissioner and his team have faced challenges including blackmail and threats from individuals dissatisfied with election outcomes. However, observers say the ministry remains committed to transparent leadership selection and due process.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has consistently emphasized genuine public service commitment from his cabinet members, a principle the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs appears to have embraced in its operations.

The elections are part of broader efforts to establish sustainable peace, transparent leadership selection, and grassroots development across Anambra State.

By Media MLGCCA

Anambra State Government through Ministry Of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, yesterday, conducted the town Union Election of the Amaokpala Community.

The election which took place at Amaokpala Civic Centre, under the supervision of the Ministry which saw Mr Chukwujekwu Jonas as the Elected President General of Amaokpala was adjudged to be free, fair, transparent and devoid of any atom of violence.

This would not have been attained if not for effort and unwearing determination of the commissioner, Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne and the cooperation of the stakeholders and people of Amaokpala Community.

It could be recalled how the Commissioner, in bid to return peace and institute a legitimate community elected leadership in Amaokpala, had several meetings with the representatives of the community.

By this election Amaokpala has joined the list of 154 communities where Anambra State Government through the office of Hon. Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs has successfully conducted Town Union Elections

Eziowelle Update...

By Mike Okechukwu
The Peacemaker

Dr. Julian Obiora has been elected as the President General of Eziowelle Development Union in what has been described as the best organized and the most peaceful town union election in the town's history. This successful election marks the first since 2018 and follows a series of consultations, heated stakeholders' town hall meetings, committee sessions, adjustments, realignment of interests, persuasion, appeals, commitments, and selfless sacrifices.

All parties in the dispute emerge as winners because they agreed to most of the conditions and resolutions for the general interests of the Eziowelle people. Noteworthy is the National Chairman of ASATU and outgoing PG of Eziowelle, Barr. Akpudo Titus (Ichaka Egbe Eji Gbu Agu), for conceding to almost every condition thrown at him for the sake of peace; he displayed exemplary acts worthy of emulation. It is also important to applaud the members of the electoral committee for the wonderful job they did by ensuring that all parties and interests were carried along throughout the exercise.

Lastly, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, deserves recognition for his time, patience, and wisdom in handling the matter from inception until success was achieved.

The people of Eziowelle now believe in Charles Chukwuma Soludo's mantra that "The Solution is Here." They have firsthand experience of the transparency in communal leadership through free, fair, and credible elections as promised by the Governor.

We congratulate the new leadership and urge them to take the town to the next level while making efforts to ensure they avoid all actions that could lead to trouble.

I was on the ground from morning till evening to ensure everything went smoothly, and I would like to specially appreciate D**e Eji Ejemba, Chairman of Dalobi Hotels Eziowelle, for the sumptuous evening banquets after our hard day's work.

Anambra is in safe hands. Let's all join Mr. Governor in achieving in dreams towards the total development of our dear homeland.

Ekenem.
