In his monthly message to Ndi Nnewi North, the Mayor prayed for divine favour and progress as the new month begins.

Information Ministry, AIRS To Deepen Collaboration On Tax Education To Support Soludo's Mega Projects

By Rose Oranye

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), Mr Ikeazor Nnaemeka Okonkwo, at the Revenue House, Awka, to forge a partnership on tax education and compliance.

Addressing the AIRS team, Dr Mefor said the Ministry of Information would strengthen AIRS through public education on tax compliance and enforcement. “We have come so that we strengthen you and assure you of partnership… It has become very necessary, given the fact that I know people don't like paying taxes. So what do we do? Instead of enforcing it, we should first talk to them and add "persuasion", then enforcement.

The commissioner noted that many Anambra residents, especially in rural and informal sectors, lack adequate knowledge of taxation.

“To be fair to our people, they have not been educated enough on the issues of tax… Many of them, particularly those you find in the informal sector, have quite a small economy. So whatever they take out of it, even N100 means a lot to them. They have to be taught why their tax, no matter how small, is important—helping the solution governor to deliver on the major projects and policies that will turn Anambra into one smart megacity."

Dr Mefor linked tax compliance to Governor Charles Soludo’s massive projects like the five dual carriageways, new general hospitals, free education and healthcare, and five new cities, among others.

"When you see the level, the magnitude of work being done by the Solution Governor… you will see that indeed the money is needed… Anambra is not really a rich state. The fact that Soludo is doing so much with so little is born out of his intentional and transformational leadership and extremely prudent economic management.”

He proposed a “full-blown media campaign” to educate citizens, with a joint team of ministry and AIRS staff to drive it. Dr Mefor also offered AIRS the platform of his flagship radio program, ‘Ask The Commissioner', for direct engagement with the people of Anambra on tax issues.

Responding, the AIRS Chairman, Mr Ikeazor Nnaemeka Okonkwo, welcomed the collaboration.

“We welcome this development and this understanding that we hope to create… Trying to get the citizens to comply is a two-pronged approach."

He clarified that AIRS is not introducing new taxes or increasing rates but implementing existing laws, including the Nigerian Tax Act 2025.

"For us to get the kind of money that is required to build these building blocks that Mr Governor has excellently put together, people need to pay their taxes.”

Agha Mba Inspects Sports Facilities Across Anambra, Pledges Rehabilitation of Stadiums

By Ifeoma Aniagbado

The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba has embarked on an inspection tour of major sports facilities across the state as part of efforts to assess their condition and chart a path for their rehabilitation.

The inspection was conducted on June 2, covering the Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Otuocha Township Stadium in Anambra East, Godwin Achebe Stadium in Onitsha South, Ogidi Stadium in Njikoka, Solution Stadium in Aguata and Awka City Stadium in Awka South.

Speaking during the exercise, the commissioner said the visit was aimed at evaluating the current state of the facilities and identifying areas requiring urgent intervention to restore them to full functionality.

Agha Mba expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of many of the stadiums, noting that years of neglect had left several of the facilities unsuitable for sporting activities and talent development.

He emphasized that sports remain a vital tool for youth empowerment, social inclusion, the discovery and nurturing of talents, stressing that the state government is committed to revitalizing sports infrastructure across Anambra.

According to him, plans are already underway to rehabilitate the affected facilities and reposition them as centres of sporting excellence, youth engagement and community development.

The commissioner further said that the inspection aligns with the vision of the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to promote sports development and create opportunities for young people to excel in various sporting disciplines.

The tour forms part of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports' broader agenda to revive sports in Anambra State, improve sporting infrastructure and provide a conducive environment for athletes to train and compete.

ANSACA Unveils New HIV Strategy, Expands Community Testing to Benefit Ndi Anambra

By Obianuju Isima

The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has unveiled a comprehensive new strategy aimed at strengthening HIV prevention, testing, treatment and community engagement across the state, a move expected to significantly improve public health outcomes for residents.

The initiative is part of the Soludo administration's efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and align Anambra's HIV response with Nigeria's National HIV/AIDS Prevention Plan (2026–2030). The strategy focuses on expanding awareness campaigns, prevention programmes and testing services to communities across the state's 21 Local Government Areas.

Executive Director of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, said the agency is prioritising grassroots interventions, data-driven programmes and active community participation to reduce new HIV infections and accelerate progress towards ending the epidemic in Anambra State.

According to him, the Soludo administration has continued to support initiatives that improve access to healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable populations, while promoting preventive measures and public health awareness across communities.

A major highlight of the new approach is Anambra's selection as a pilot state for the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Prevention Plan (2026–2030). The development is expected to attract additional technical support, funding opportunities and innovative healthcare interventions that will strengthen the state's response to HIV.

ANSACA has also intensified efforts to improve HIV surveillance and testing through its participation in the 2026 Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Study (IBBSS). The study is expected to generate critical data that will help health authorities identify service gaps, target vulnerable populations more effectively and enhance evidence-based decision-making.

In a further boost to HIV prevention efforts, the Soludo administration recently commenced the rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN PrEP), a long-acting injectable medication for HIV prevention. Administered just twice a year and offered free of charge at designated health facilities, the drug is expected to improve adherence to preventive treatment and reduce the risk of new infections among vulnerable groups.

The agency has also expanded collaboration with Nnamdi Azikiwe University to promote HIV awareness, research, testing and healthcare support. Discussions are ongoing on the possibility of establishing a dedicated HIV research institute that would advance research and innovation in the fight against the disease.

Dr. Okeke described these developments as important milestones in strengthening healthcare delivery, reducing HIV transmission, and ensuring wider access to testing, treatment and preventive services for residents.

With the new strategy and expanded community-based interventions championed by the Soludo administration through ANSACA, Anambra is positioning itself to make significant progress in HIV prevention and control while improving the overall wellbeing of Ndi Anambra.

* Lauds First Power, ASERC'S Milestones In Improving Power Supply In Anambra

By Rose Oranye

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has commended the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) and First Power Electricity Distribution Company Limited for milestones recorded in improving power supply in the state, describing electricity as a major key in the new Anambra that Governor Soludo is building.

Dr. Mefor, who spoke today, June 2, 2026, at ASERC’s Presentation and Signing of Regulatory Instruments, held at the Commission’s Office, Old Government House, Awka, noted that the new laws were meant to provide governance and legal frameworks for the sector.

“I just want to first commend the efforts of the commission. I was here many, many years ago when there was no commission. And between then and now, so much growth, so much power,” Mefor said.

The Commissioner linked the reforms to visible improvements since First Power was empowered. “The day First Power was empowered, I was there also. And since then, I think power supply improved significantly. I hope others are also witnessing improved power supply. If you are not witnessing, you will soon witness with the coming into force of these four laws.”

Mefor reiterated that Governor Soludo is desperate to give Anambra power to encourage industrialisation and to drive mega projects across the state.

He listed key new mega projects by Governor Soludo in his second term that will depend on reliable electricity: the emerging night economy, the planned Aerotropolis with its aviation-linked ecosystem, the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City, which Anambra calls its industrial park, and Nee Niger City, among others.

“For me, electricity and roads are the two things that make me believe that a place is transforming. Electricity is at the centre of the new Anambra that Soludo is bringing. He is transforming Anambra into one smart megacity. How can that be without electricity?” he asked.

He challenged Electricity Regulatory commission to break First Power's monopoly to create competition and that way, improve service delivery.
"Drawing from my little knowledge of economics, monopoly breeds complacency, while free market creates healthy competition by offering consumers options," he said.

The ASERC Chairman, Prof. Frank N. Okafor, in his opening remarks, singled out the Ministry of Information for commendation for backing the Commission’s public education drive.

“The Ministry of Information has to help inform the public on what is required and what is needed. I have to praise them because this arm has been very, very supportive for us,” he said.

He listed the four instruments signed - Business Rules, Customer Protection Regulation, Licensing Regulation, and Investment Regulation, which are expected to guide governance, protect consumers, and attract investment in Anambra’s electricity sector.

Anambra Govt Moves to Restore Order at Ogbaru Electronics Market

By Amaka Isikala

The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to market reforms aimed at improving safety and orderliness, as the Commissioner for Commerce, Mr. Nomso Chukwuma Ebonwu, met with traders and officials of Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The meeting held on today, June 2 at Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka, brought together the Commissioner, the Mayor of Ogbaru LGA, Sir Kenneth Akwuobi, Chairman of Ogbaru Electronics Traders Association, Mr. Azubuike Nwafor, and members of the association’s executive.

Discussions focused on the current condition of Ogbaru Electronics Market and steps needed to sanitise trading activities.

The traders’ delegation appealed to the state government to intensify enforcement and ensure that street traders relocate to officially designated spaces. They argued that clearing roadways and walkways would reduce accidents, ease congestion, and create a more conducive business environment for both traders and customers.

Responding, Commissioner Ebonwu assured the delegation that the Ministry of Commerce would enforce the governor’s directives on market sanitation and compliance. He said government policies are geared toward promoting orderly trading, protecting lives and property, and building sustainable markets across Anambra.

“The Soludo administration is committed to reforms that will make our markets safer, cleaner, and more profitable for traders. We will work with you to restore normalcy and ensure everyone operates within approved trading spaces,” commissioner said.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Engr Michael Obiekwe, added that plans are underway to upgrade market infrastructure and strengthen management systems to support trader productivity and growth.

Commending the government, Mr. Nwafor thanked the commissioner for the audience and lauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts to improve market conditions statewide.
