Delta to Modernise Public Libraries, Expand Digital Learning

Delta State Government has begun moves to upgrade public libraries into modern knowledge and digital learning centres as part of efforts to improve access to education and research.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Nyerhovwo Tonukari, disclosed this during an inspection of the Delta State Library headquarters and its branch in Asaba, saying the exercise would guide a comprehensive upgrade of library facilities across the state.

He said the initiative was aimed at repositioning public libraries to meet the demands of technology-driven learning while enhancing access to information for students, researchers and the public.

During the visit, officials of the Delta State Library Board identified operational challenges and commended the government for recent interventions, including the provision of laptops to improve service delivery.

Tonukari urged the management to seek partnerships with private organisations and philanthropists to expand book collections and other learning resources. He also directed that government publications and official gazettes be properly preserved for research and public reference.

The commissioner assured the library of improved internet connectivity, better data services and structural upgrades to enhance users’ experience.

At the Asaba branch, he pledged to replace obsolete equipment and improve the learning environment.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education, Felicia Rone-Orugboh, urged staff to demonstrate professionalism and initiative in the discharge of their duties.

Oborevwori Donates Five Vehicles to Correctional Service

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has donated five operational vehicles to the Delta State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service to strengthen security and improve the administration of justice.

The vehicles were presented at Government House, Asaba, by the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, on behalf of the governor.

Oborevwori said the donation reflected his administration’s commitment to enhancing the operational capacity of security institutions, noting that efficient correctional services depend on reliable logistics and mobility.

He said the vehicles would improve supervision, coordination and response capacity, enabling officers to discharge their responsibilities more effectively.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies under the Enhanced Peace and Security pillar of the MORE Agenda, stressing that peace and security remain critical to sustainable development.

While describing the Nigerian Correctional Service as a federal institution, he said its role in protecting lives and property made collaboration with the state government imperative.

Oborevwori urged the command to ensure proper maintenance of the vehicles and deploy them strictly for official duties.

Responding, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, represented by the Delta State Controller of Corrections, Chuke Idoko, thanked the state government for the donation and assured that the vehicles would be put to effective use.

Delta Investment Summit: Aniagwu Urges Local Firms to Invest

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, has urged the organised private sector to become active investors in the state’s economy ahead of the Delta State Investment and Economic Summit scheduled for August 3 to 5.

Speaking during an interactive meeting with business groups in Asaba, Aniagwu said local entrepreneurs would play a crucial role in translating investment opportunities into sustainable economic growth.

He said that although foreign investors were expected at the summit, indigenous businesses had a greater stake in Delta’s long-term development and should position themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Aniagwu urged firms to form Special Purpose Vehicles to pool funds and invest in sectors such as agriculture, oil and gas, manufacturing and other areas where the state has comparative advantages.

According to him, the summit should produce investments, partnerships and jobs rather than end with presentations and discussions.

He also called on the private sector to make practical recommendations that would improve the business environment and deepen local participation in the state’s economy.

Aniagwu expressed confidence that stronger collaboration between government and businesses would attract investment, create jobs and accelerate Delta’s economic growth.

Shettima, Okonjo-Iweala, Foreign Investors for Delta Economic Summit

Delta State Government has said 25 prospective investors from Brazil and China have signified interest in its forthcoming Investment and Economic Summit, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expected to headline the event.

Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr Kingsley Emu, said the summit, themed Harnessing Our Strengths and Potential, would showcase bankable opportunities in agriculture, power, the blue economy, solid minerals, manufacturing and oil and gas.

Emu said investors were seeking credible local partners, stressing that the summit was designed to attract investments capable of creating jobs and stimulating sustainable growth. He identified Delta’s gas reserves, waterways, fertile land, skilled workforce and expanding infrastructure as key competitive advantages.

He added that the state was prioritising mini-grid electricity, aquaculture, agro-processing and mineral development to diversify its economy beyond oil.

Speaking for the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Janet Olisa pledged the organised private sector’s support, expressing confidence that the summit would translate investment commitments into tangible economic opportunities.

Delta Approves 50 CNG Buses, Mega Terminal To Boost Mass Transit

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the procurement of 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses, the acquisition of electric vehicles and the construction of a mega bus terminal in Asaba to improve public transportation.

The approvals were among decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, said the decisions followed a transportation study conducted in Asaba, Warri, Ughelli, Agbor, Sapele, Abraka and Oleh.

According to him, the survey showed that more than 19,000 people commute daily across the state, with about 80 per cent relying on public transport.

He said the findings highlighted the need to strengthen the state’s mass transit system.

Agofure noted that the 50 CNG buses would form the backbone of the MORE Mass Transit Scheme aimed at providing safe, affordable and efficient transportation.

He added that the approval of electric vehicles reflected the government’s commitment to cleaner and more sustainable transport.

The commissioner also disclosed that the council approved the construction of a mega bus terminal in Asaba to serve as the operational hub of the mass transit scheme.

He said the facility would replace the numerous roadside parks around Koka Junction and improve traffic flow in the state capital.

According to him, land has been acquired for the project and construction will commence after the completion of necessary processes.

Agofure added that a similar terminal would be built in Warri following Federal Government approval secured through the intervention of Governor Oborevwori.

He said the projects formed part of the administration’s efforts to modernise transportation infrastructure and improve mobility across the state.

Delta Moves To Make 13th-Month Salary Permanent, Plans Teachers’ Recruitment

The Delta State Executive Council has approved the institutionalisation of the 13th-month salary for civil servants and the recruitment of additional teachers for public secondary schools.

The approvals were among key decisions taken at the Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the council approved a memo seeking to make the 13th-month salary a statutory benefit for workers.

He said an executive bill would be forwarded to the Delta State House of Assembly to provide legal backing for the policy.

According to Aniagwu, the move is intended to ensure that the payment becomes a legal entitlement for civil servants rather than the discretion of any administration.

He added that the council also approved, in principle, the recruitment of more teachers to address shortages in public secondary schools, particularly in science subjects.

Aniagwu said the Ministry of Secondary Education had been directed to submit a memo indicating the number of teachers required.

The commissioner further disclosed that the council approved the procurement and installation of equipment for the Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area, and also approved plans to equip the Technical College, Irri, after its completion.

He said the decisions reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening technical education and equipping young people with employable skills.

Aniagwu added that the council approved matters relating to the health and transport sectors, including new transport routes across the state.

He also announced the approval of the appointment of Goodnews Goodman Agbi as the Ovie of Oyede Kingdom in Isoko North Local Government Area.

OBOREVWORI REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO WORKERS AT PUBLIC SERVICE WEEK THANKSGIVING..AS OSEJI LEADS THANKSGIVING, UNVEILS FINAL ACTIVITIES

The 2026 Delta State Public Service Week reached another significant milestone on Sunday with a solemn Thanksgiving Service held at the Church of God Mission, Asaba, as government officials and civil servants gathered to appreciate God for the dedication, resilience and contributions of the state’s workforce.

Representing Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori at the service, the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, conveyed the Governor’s goodwill to the public servants, emphasizing that the administration remains committed to supporting the welfare of the civil service.

“I am here as a messenger of our working Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. A day like this will not pass without the Governor showing his presence,” Onyeme said.

He thanked God for the opportunity to celebrate with the state’s workforce, describing public servants as the driving force behind the growth and development of Delta State.

“We thank God for the men and women whose dedicated service continues to advance the development of our state. Though much of your work is done quietly, its impact is deeply felt across every sector,” he stated.

The Deputy Governor reminded civil servants that public service is a sacred trust that demands integrity, commitment and selfless service.

“As we thank God today, let us remain committed to serving faithfully. I assure you that this administration will continue to support your welfare, and together we will build a more prosperous and responsive civil service.

“As we return to our various duties, may we do so with renewed faith and commitment. May God continue to bless Delta State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.

Earlier in her remarks, the Head of Service, Dr. Mrs. Mininim Oseji, expressed gratitude to God for the successful activities recorded so far during the Public Service Week, noting that the annual thanksgiving service has become an important aspect of the celebration.

“This is the third time we are holding a thanksgiving service with top government functionaries joining us to worship God. We are grateful for His faithfulness throughout our service,” she said.

Dr. Oseji announced that the celebration would continue on Monday with a basketball tournament at the Head of Service’s residence, while the grand finale, tagged Gala Night, will hold on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expected to attend.

She thereafter invited the Deputy Governor, other government officials and the congregation to participate in the thanksgiving offering.

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, was represented at the service by Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, member representing Oshimili South State Constituency. Also in attendance were the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Sir Chris Osakwe; the Chairman of the Delta State Civil Service Commission, Lady Rose Amioku, represented by the Fourth Member of the Commission, Barr. Ikechukwu Maduemezie, alongside the College of Permanent Secretaries, directors and staff from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The thanksgiving service attracted a large gathering of senior government officials and public servants, highlighting the importance of faith, unity and dedication in the continued growth of the Delta State Civil Service.

Activities marking the 2026 Public Service Week will continue on Monday with a basketball tournament at the residence of the Head of Service before culminating on Tuesday 30 June. with the Gala Night, which will officially bring the week-long celebration to a close.

2026 CIVIL SERVICE WEEK : OIL AND GAS WINS FOOTBALL TITLE AS MDAS SHINE IN MARCH PAST

Activities marking the 2026 Delta State Civil Service Week gathered momentum on Friday, June 26, as Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) converged at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, for a colourful March Past and the grand finale of the 2026 Civil Service Football Tournament.

The event attracted a remarkable turnout, with Permanent Secretaries, Directors and senior management staff joining their respective ministries in a spirited display of discipline, teamwork and unity as they competed for honours in the parade.

In her welcome address, the Delta State Head of Service, Dr. Mrs. Mininim Oseji, commended the impressive participation by the various MDAs, describing it as a reflection of the renewed commitment and transformation within the Delta State Civil Service.

“The overwhelming turnout by Ministries, Departments and Agencies is commendable. It reflects the new face of the Delta State Civil Service and our shared commitment to excellence in public service,” she said.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Prince Johnson Erijo, congratulated the Head of Service and civil servants for their enthusiastic participation in the activities lined up for the Civil Service Week celebration.

He noted that the discipline, unity and commitment displayed throughout the week underscored the values for which the Delta State Civil Service is known.

The Governor applauded civil servants for their dedication and sacrifices, stressing that their efforts remain the driving force behind the successful implementation of his administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.

“Your hard work and commitment continue to make the M.O.R.E. Agenda a reality. The achievements recorded by this administration would not have been possible without the dedication of the Delta State Civil Service,” he stated.

The march past featured colourful displays by participating MDAs, with civil servants demonstrating impressive parade skills in a keenly contested competition. One of the major highlights was the Ministry of Agriculture, which presented fresh cucumbers as its greeting salute to the Governor, drawing applause from dignitaries and spectators.

The day’s activities also witnessed the thrilling final of the 2026 Delta State Civil Service Football Tournament, where the Ministry of Oil and Gas defeated the Delta State Sports Commission 1–0 to emerge champions of the competition.

Present at the event were former Head of Service, Sir Okey Ofili, members of the College of Permanent Secretaries, Directors and other senior government officials.

Meanwhile, the Civil Service Week celebration continues on Saturday, June 27, at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba, with the Civil Service Golf Classic; an 18-hole stroke play tournament designed to celebrate excellence, friendship and camaraderie among civil servants and invited participants.

The week-long celebration continues to promote unity, healthy competition and teamwork while reinforcing the Delta State Government’s commitment to building a productive, efficient and people-oriented Civil Service.
