DEFENCE MINISTER HOSTS BROTHER OF LATE BRIG. GEN. OSENI BRAIMAH, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO FAMILIES OF FALLEN HEROES

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, received Mr. Hassan Braimah, brother of the late Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, at the Ministry of Defence, Abuja.

Brigadier General Braimah, a distinguished Infantry Officer of the Nigerian Army, died in the line of duty at Benisheikh on 9th April 2026. At the time of his passing, he was Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade. He was laid to rest with full military honours at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery, Maiduguri, on 15th April 2026, alongside seven other personnel who died in service.

During the visit, Mr. Hassan Braimah shared poignant memories of his brother as a dedicated officer committed to the service of the nation. He expressed pride in the General’s sacrifice and assured the Minister of the family’s resolve to support the loved ones left behind.

Responding with deep empathy ,the Minister extended the condolences of the Ministry and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the Braimah family. He reaffirmed that the Ministry maintains an open-door policy and provides continuous support to families of fallen heroes.

The visit underscored the nation’s enduring gratitude for the sacrifices of its military personnel and the Ministry’s resolve to uphold their legacy by supporting their families.

DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS WARNS OF TERRORIST MIGRATION TO SOUTH-SOUTHEAST, REJECTS ‘MISINFORMATION’ CLAIMS.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has issued a forceful rebuttal to claims that it downplayed the threat of terrorism in the South-West, stating that displaced insurgents from the North are behind recent kidnappings in the region.

In a statement released Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, accused unnamed actors of twisting earlier security assessments to spread “mischievous and misleading” narratives. The controversy followed public anxiety over abductions in Oyo State and debate over whether armed groups operating outside Nigeria’s traditional insurgency zones should be classified as terrorists.

The Defence Headquarters insisted it never referred to violent extremists as mere “criminals” or sought to undermine elected authorities. Instead, it said its earlier comments were intended to provide intelligence-based context and prevent unnecessary panic.

The statement revealed that recent kidnappings in Oyo State were carried out by fighters linked to the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad [JAS] faction. These insurgents, it said, had been displaced from their North-East and North-West strongholds by sustained military offensives and were now relocating to previously less volatile regions.

Security analysts warn that the migration of hardened insurgents into the South-West could significantly elevate the region’s threat profile if not urgently contained. The Defence Headquarters maintained that troops are actively conducting operations with other security agencies and local stakeholders to dismantle emerging networks before they take root.

The military also stressed its loyalty to constitutional governance, noting that “at no time did the Defence Headquarters undermine the authority of any democratically elected leader.” It reiterated that years of pressure on insurgent enclaves in the North have fragmented terror cells, forcing survivors into new territories and asymmetric operations such as kidnapping-for-ransom and highway attacks.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains resolute in dismantling all criminal and terrorist networks threatening the peace, stability and unity of the nation,” the statement concluded.
