You fought the battle alone?” Then please explain the history properly. How did a people who were systematically oppressed, politically silenced, economically isolated and violently suppressed for decades finally dismantle apartheid without diplomatic, political, economic and international support? Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years***was the struggle won by magic?
South Africans made enormous sacrifices, absolutely. But they did not fight in isolation. African countries provided political, diplomatic, financial and material support to the anti-apartheid struggle, while international pressure and sanctions also helped weaken the apartheid regime. Acknowledging that support does NOT diminish the courage of South Africans; it honours those who stood with them.
And please understand this: acknowledging history is not “blaming South Africa for our failures.” Every country has its own problems and responsibilities. But when you erase the sacrifices others made for your freedom, you distort history. No country survives or succeeds entirely alone.
Be proud of what South Africans achieved. They deserve that pride. But don't be so proud that you rewrite the history of how you got there. Learn your history, acknowledge those who stood with you, and stop turning African solidarity into a competition. 🇳🇬🤝🏿🇿🇦
Additionally, for clarity, I keep seeing the argument: “You helped the ANC, not South Africa.” Really? 😂 And who was the ANC fighting for? The ANC was not a foreign country. It was a South African liberation movement fighting against apartheid and for the political freedom of Black South Africans. So when other African countries supported the ANC and the broader liberation struggle, they were supporting the struggle to free South Africa from apartheid.
You cannot separate the ANC's liberation struggle from the liberation of South Africa simply because you don't want to acknowledge the assistance received. South Africans fought bravely, yes. But they had allies. Nigeria and other African countries stood with the liberation struggle through political, diplomatic, economic and other forms of support.
So please, don't rewrite history to make it look as though South Africa liberated itself in complete isolation. You can celebrate your people's courage without erasing those who stood beside you. Acknowledging help does not make your achievement smaller****it makes the history complete. 🇳🇬❤️🇿🇦
