Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology, Nigeria Agricultural Biotechnology The programme is kept light and may include one key speaker followed by a moderated discussion to allow time for socialising.

Blog by the National Biotechnology Development Agency on OFAB for any interested in Agriculture and Biotechnology on advancements in the area with regards research and development. The Open Forum is an opportunity to share knowledge and experience, exchange views on complex issues, while respecting each other’s opinion. Attendance is by invitation. Discussions are topical and presentations are based on particular problems identified in the wider area of agriculture, technological innovation, food security and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa. OFAB meetings are a good source of information for all, especially the media. Facilitation of media briefing sessions by the speakers form part and parcel of the meetings, and scheduled speakers are encouraged to prepare for media discussions through provision of newsworthy information and participation in media interviews.

The just-concluded 2026 Conference of the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association (NPBA) was held under the theme:

“Leveraging Breeding Innovations and Strategic Partnerships for Agribusiness Investment, Stable Supply Chains, and National Food Security in a Changing Climate.”

The conference brought together diverse stakeholders from Nigeria and around the world, including plant breeders, researchers, scientists, policymakers, academia, industry players, Seed Companies, development partners, and other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.

OFAB Nigeria was pleased to participate in the conference exhibition, which provided an opportunity to engage with participants, share information on agricultural biotechnology, and highlight the role of biotechnology and improved crop varieties in supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.

The exhibition also provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, networking and strengthening partnerships among stakeholders working towards a more resilient and productive agricultural sector.

We appreciate the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association for convening this important gathering and all participants who visited the OFAB Nigeria exhibition stand.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents’ Chapel successfully hosted the second edition of its Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference 2026, bringing together key stakeholders across health, media, and policy sectors.

In attendance include Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General/CEO, National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA); Comrade Philip Shaibu, Director General/CEO, National Institute for Sports; Yusuf Yinusa, Rep. Chief Medical Consultant, Dr PhysiQ Health and Wellness Centre; and Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman, NUJ-FCT Council, among others.

The Theme of the conference, “Product Integrity and Safety” and “Healthy Living and Preventive Care,” addresses the two critical pillars of a sustainable healthcare system: ensuring the safety and authenticity of products consumed by citizens, and promoting preventive lifestyles that reduce disease burden.

In an era where misinformation, particularly on health matters, spreads rapidly, the role of credible journalism and responsible media platforms remains indispensable. Accurate information not only saves lives but also builds public trust and drives positive behavioural change.

Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha highlighted the vital role of biotechnology in advancing healthy living and preventive healthcare. He emphasized innovations in nutrition, disease surveillance, diagnostics, and vaccine development, including the use of biofortified foods enriched with essential vitamins and minerals to combat malnutrition. He further noted that modern diagnostic tools enable early detection of diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV, thereby supporting timely treatment and reducing transmission.

He also underscored the contribution of biotechnology to environmental health through cleaner water systems, improved waste management, pollution control, and reduced pesticide use. These innovations collectively support healthier communities and more sustainable food systems by enhancing productivity, food safety, and climate resilience.

Prof. Mustapha concluded by stressing that innovation alone is not sufficient; science must be understood, trusted, and embraced by the public. This underscores the importance of sustained awareness and science communication.

A healthier Nigeria is a stronger Nigeria.
