NPC CHAIRMAN VISITS TRAINING CENTRE FOR 2026 KANO MINI DEMOGRAPHIC AND HEALTH SURVEY

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, today, 19th May 2026, visited the training centre for the ongoing Training of Interviewers (ToI) for the 2026 Kano Mini Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (Mini-NDHS).

The training is being held at Kini Country Guest Inn, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, ahead of the commencement of fieldwork for the survey in Kano State.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Yusuf said the purpose of his visit was to monitor the progress of the training and to encourage participants to give their best in ensuring the collection of quality and reliable data.

He stressed that credible data is critical to evidence-based planning and policymaking, particularly in the health sector, noting that the survey’s outcome would significantly support health interventions and development planning in Kano State.

The NPC Chairman commended Kano State for being the first in the country to conduct a State-level Mini Demographic and Health Survey, describing the initiative as a milestone. He disclosed plans to pay a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Kano State to formally congratulate him on the achievement.

Dr. Yusuf also expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and ICF for entrusting the Commission with the responsibility of implementing the survey. He assured all functionaries of adequate security during the exercise, revealing that he had written to relevant security agencies to provide necessary security coverage throughout the fieldwork period.

In his remarks, the Statistician-General and Director-General of the Kano State Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Suraj Sulaiman, said the state was privileged to pilot the survey. He noted that extensive preparations had been made to ensure a smooth and successful exercise.

The ICF Project Lead, Ms. Suzanne Arrington, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to providing technical support to guarantee the success of the survey.

Similarly, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Adeyinka Odejimi, commended the NPC for its professionalism and technical expertise, while appreciating the Chairman for personally monitoring the exercise.

Earlier, the Director of Planning and Research Department of the Commission, Mr. Joseph Ilelaboye, welcomed the Chairman and thanked him for the visit.

Providing an overview of the project, the Project Director of the 2026 Kano Mini-NDHS, Mrs. Vitaleen Nnadi, said the ongoing training of field functionaries would conclude on 25th May 2026. She added that fieldwork is scheduled to commence on 30th May and run until 6th August 2026.

According to her, the Key Indicator Report is expected to be released in September 2026, while the final report will be ready by January 2027.

NPC CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR URGENT REFORM OF NIGERIA’S CIVIL REGISTRATION SYSTEM

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, has called for stronger collaboration and accelerated reforms to build an integrated, digital, and interoperable Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system for Nigeria.

Speaking at the Second Meeting of the National CRVS Coordination Committee held today, 19th May 2026, at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Dr. Yusuf emphasized that civil registration remains the foundation of legal identity, good governance, and sustainable national development. He expressed concern that birth and death registration rates in Nigeria remain unacceptably low at about 40 percent and below, respectively, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated action among stakeholders.

"We can no longer afford to operate in silos," Dr. Yusuf stated. "An integrated CRVS system that seamlessly connects with health facilities, identity management, and other government platforms is not optional. It is imperative."

He highlighted the launch of the electronic CRVS platform in 2023 and the inaugural committee meeting in July 2025 as major milestones but acknowledged that progress has been slow due to fragmented systems and weak coordination.

Dr. Yusuf reaffirmed the NPC’s commitment to providing leadership and coordination, urging all partners to work collectively toward creating a system that guarantees every Nigerian a legal identity and accurate national records.

UNICEF Nigeria’s Chief Child Protection Officer, Ms. Mona Aika, reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in strengthening its civil registration systems, stressing that birth registration is a legal right for every child.

The Director of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics at the NPC, Hajia Hapsatu Husaini Isiyaku, presented the national strategic plan highlighting progress, priorities, and next steps.

The inauguration of the CRVS Technical Working Group and the presentation of its mandate by NPC Acting Director-General, Dr. Nnamdi Maduekwe, formed the highlight of the event.

The meeting, which focused on reviewing the National CRVS Strategic Acceleration Action Plan (2026–2030), brought together key government agencies and development partners. Dignitaries at the meeting included the Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, alongside representatives of ministries, departments, and agencies involved in CRVS implementation.
