Yesterday evening, I had a long discussion with a Christian friend. During our conversation, one of his friends asked me, How do you know so much about Christianity when you are a Muslim?
My friend replied, Because she was once a Christian.
The man looked surprised and said, I am disappointed that a beautiful young lady who was raised in a Christian home would leave Christianity and accept Islam. What can I do to make you become a Christian again?
I smiled and told him, Absolutely nothing. My acceptance of Islam was a personal journey based on conviction, knowledge, and understanding.
As we continued talking, I asked him a simple question:
Have you ever stayed in a hotel and found a Bible beside the bed?
He answered, YES Of course.
Then I asked, Have you ever found a QURAN placed beside the bed in most hotels?
He said, NO.
I explained to him that one of the things that attracted me to Islam is the deep reverence Muslims have for the Holy Quran Muslims are taught to treat the Quran with utmost respect, keeping it in a clean and honorable place.
This conversation reminded me of something important we should not judge people because of their religion, tribe, or background. Instead, we should seek understanding.
The Holy Quran says
There is no compulsion in religion. Truth stands clear from error(Quran 2:256)
And the Bible says
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God (Matthew 5:9).
The Quran also teaches and it says
O mankind We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another (Quran 49:13).
As for me, I respect Christianity, and I do not discriminate against Christians. In fact, I have a son who is a Christian, and we live together with mutual respect and love. We learn from one another, and lately he has shown interest in learning more about Islam.
My message today is simple
Stop judging people because they are Muslims, Christians, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, or from any other tribe. Character is more important than tribe. Respect is more important than labels.
Understanding is more powerful than hatred.
We may not all follow the same path, but we can still respect one another, learn from one another, and live in peace.
Above all, Religion should bring us closer to God, not push us farther away from humanity.
NOTE:A person's tribe does not define their character, and their religion should never be a reason to hate them. Let knowledge lead us, and let respect unite us.
Remember I Am still that Igbo muslimah from a Christian home who found Faith in ISLAM ☪️
