In 2023, Even My Children Supported Peter Obi, But Now They Say ‘Daddy, We Didn’t Know This Man Was Like This’ — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has claimed that even members of his family who supported Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election have changed their views about the former Anambra State governor.

Wike made the statement while speaking on TVC News’ Journalists’ Hangout, where he discussed the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Wike, some of his children supported Obi during the 2023 election but have since told him they did not know the Labour Party presidential candidate would turn out the way they now perceive him.

“In 2023, even my children supported Peter Obi. But now they tell me, ‘Daddy, we didn’t know this man is like this,’” Wike said.

The FCT Minister also dismissed the strength of what he described as the “Obi wave,” arguing that the level of support Obi enjoyed during the 2023 election is no longer the same.

“The Obi wave is not there again,” Wike declared.

His comments come amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures positioning themselves for the contest.

Wike has meanwhile continued to openly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former Rivers State governor has also repeatedly criticised opposition politicians seeking to challenge Tinubu in 2027, insisting that the political calculations have changed since the last presidential election.

Do you think the political support Peter Obi enjoyed in 2023 has changed ahead of 2027?

Wike challenges Obi’s supporters to produce result sheet showing he won Rivers in 2023
Mr Wike also questioned why Mr Obi’s supporters did not establish their claim during the legal process challenging the 2023 presidential election.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged supporters of Peter Obi to produce the official result sheet showing that the Labour Party candidate won Rivers State in the 2023 presidential election.

Mr Wike dismissed claims by Obi’s supporters, popularly known as Obidients, that their candidate won the state, saying the claim existed only in their imagination.

The former Rivers State governor spoke on Monday during an interview on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, where he was asked about his political influence in the state and the claim that Mr Obi won Rivers in 2023.

They won by their own imagination. Who did INEC declare to have won?” Mr Wike said.

He challenged those who dispute the declared result to produce the evidence on which they based their claim.

Let them produce that result sheet that says Obi won,” he said.

Mr Wike also questioned why Mr Obi’s supporters did not establish their claim during the legal challenge to the 2023 presidential election.

When they went to the tribunal, were they able to defend their claim?” he asked.

The minister said claims made on social media could not determine the winner of an election.

You can win on social media; I’m not interested in social media winning,” he said.

He argued that the outcome of the election could not be determined from results or observations from a limited number of polling units in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

You don’t stay in one place in Port Harcourt and say Obi has won,” he said.

Mr Wike pointed out that Rivers has 23 local government areas and said the overall result had to be considered before declaring a winner.

G5 governors let Obi win south-south in 2023 to scatter Atiku's chances ~ Wike

Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says G5 governors deliberately allowed Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), to win in the south-south during the 2023 election.

He described the move as a political strategy adopted at the time to scatter Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), because the region was the party’s stronghold.

But in 2027 is different Atiku doesn’t have anything to do with south South and Obi is not going to win south south again.

PRESS STATEMENT

NDC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL (PCC) READY SOON

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) wishes to inform its teeming members, supporters, and the general public that the party is in active consultation with all relevant stakeholders to develop and inaugurate a robust Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

In this regard, our Presidential Candidate and his Vice-Presidential Candidate have held several productive meetings with the National Leader and the leadership of the party.

To ensure inclusiveness, cohesion, and victory, the party at the national level has agreed as follows:

1. That our Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso shall nominate the Director-General of the Campaign, Deputy Director-General (North), the Spokesman of the Campaign, Deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, the Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and several others in consultation with the party. The party leadership has given a free hand to the presidential candidate and his running mate to make nominations.

That the Finance Director and his Deputy, in collaboration with the National Treasurer of the party, shall manage all campaign funds in the spirit of transparency and accountability, as the party is saddled with the responsibility of rendering accounts to INEC in line with the Electoral Act.

That a full organogram of the campaign structure has been developed since August and made available to both Mr. Peter Obi and Dr. Kwankwaso for their input, while we also got nominations from other stakeholders across the country.

The party wishes to assure the public that as soon as we receive the inputs of our Presidential Candidate and his Vice, the NDC shall proceed to announce and inaugurate the same. We have also proposed a campaign timetable since August, and we are waiting to conclude arrangements for the funding and fundraising for the campaign, to be spearheaded by the candidates. The money raised shall be paid into the presidential campaign account to be managed by officers nominated by the presidential candidate and his running mate, as well as the party national treasurer.

The inauguration of the PCC was earlier scheduled for the first week of September but had to be put off due to the travel schedule of the presidential candidate.

We also appeal to all our candidates at all levels to restrain their supporters and support groups to focus on the need to win elections. There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC. We are committed as a party. The party has done its own and is ready to do more. The candidates and their supporters are encouraged to do the same.

Our candidates should keep their eyes on the ball and focus on winning.

The NDC wants all our candidates at all levels to win resoundingly, especially as they are not running as independent candidates.

Similarly, the party's leadership in line with the Electoral Act, 2026, has directed all State Chairmen and Local Government Area Chairmen to immediately convene meetings with candidates and relevant stakeholders in their respective states to collate and harmonize the list of party agents to be deployed for the forthcoming general elections.
Accordingly, the party further directs as follows:

A. The state and LGA Chairmen shall meet with candidates and stakeholders to generate a comprehensive list of two sets of party agents, those for national assembly elections and another set for governorship/state assembly elections. These party agents shall be scrutinized and ratified by the party’s leadership, including the presidential candidate and his running mate before training commences.

B. The exercise shall be concluded, and the final list submitted within two (2) weeks from the date of this directive. The committee saddled with the responsibility of appointment of our party agents is chaired by Comrade Babatunde Alli, the deputy national chairman (South), Vin Martin Ilo (Secretary) Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura, and the National Vice Chairmen of the six geopolitical zones are members.

Thank you.
