I was honoured to represent the Nigeria Food Corporation (NFC) at the 3rd Edition of the Yobe State Spelling Bee Competition in Damaturu, alongside the Chairman of the Board of Directors of NFC, Dr. Sa’id Alkali Kori. The competition, which brought together 146 contestants from 73 schools across Yobe State, was a remarkable demonstration of the confidence, intelligence and potential of our young people. I commend Governor Mai Mala Buni for his continued commitment to education and human capital development, as well as the Deputy Governor, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, the Local Organising Committee, schools, teachers, parents and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.

As the Exclusive Premium Gold Sponsor, the Nigeria Food Corporation contributed ₦20 million towards the successful hosting of the competition. For me, that moment was a powerful reminder that every child deserves an opportunity to learn, compete, dream and succeed, regardless of their circumstances. At NFC, we believe that building a prosperous Yobe requires investment not only in agriculture and industry, but also in the education, skills and wellbeing of our young people.

The event also provided an opportunity to reaffirm the Corporation’s commitment to Governor Buni’s vision of transforming Yobe into a modern agro-industrial economy. With four major assets transferred to NFC, the Yobe Flour & Feeds Mills, Wheat Flour Global Mills, Yobe State Fertilizer Blending Company in Gujba, and the Damaturu Modern Abattoir, we are focused on revitalising these facilities, creating employment, strengthening food security and ensuring that locally produced agricultural resources are processed within the state. I remain confident that by combining human capital development with economic and agro-industrial transformation, we can build a stronger, more productive and prosperous Yobe State.

Gov Buni Takes Regional Leadership To The Frontline

In regional diplomacy, leadership is ultimately measured not only by meetings held in capitals, but by whether political engagement reaches the communities living with the consequences of conflict. That distinction defined the visit of Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum (LCBGF), Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, to Lac Province in the Republic of Chad, where high-level engagement in Bol was followed by a humanitarian visit to Nigerian refugees at Kaya.

In Bol, Governor Buni’s engagement with the Governor of Lac Province, Gen. Saleh Hagar Tidjani and Ahmat Kardayo Hissein Governor for the Hadjer-Lamis province, reinforced a simple but strategically important reality: Nigeria and Chad share more than borders. Their security, communities, livelihoods and economic futures are deeply interconnected. Governor Buni therefore reaffirmed the commitment of the LCBGF to translate the resolutions reached in Maiduguri into practical action for peace, security and economic growth across the Basin.

Particularly significant was the Chairman’s commitment to advocate the opening of waterways to improve mobility for security operations and the transportation of goods and services. This places connectivity at the centre of stabilization, recognizing that secure transport routes can simultaneously strengthen security, reconnect markets and improve livelihoods. Governor Tidjani, in turn, described the engagement as an important contribution to peaceful coexistence, security, stability and economic growth among member territories.

But perhaps the most politically and humanly compelling moment came away from the formal meeting rooms. At Kaya Refugee Camp, Governor Buni met Nigerians displaced across the border by years of insecurity. Their community leader, Ba Bulama Usman, described Buni as the first Nigerian government official to visit them, saying the visit had given the refugees “a sense of belonging and hope.” That testimony transformed the visit from diplomatic symbolism into an important demonstration of responsive regional leadership.

Governor Buni commended the refugees for living peacefully with their Chadian hosts and for engaging productively in fishing and farming. He urged them to remain law-abiding, reject criminality and remain vigilant against suspicious movements and infiltration. More importantly, he offered a pathway for those wishing voluntarily to return to Nigeria: to coordinate with the Lake Chad Basin Commission and other relevant institutions to facilitate their identification and census, while their respective state governments would support repatriation.

That commitment is politically significant. It connects humanitarian responsibility with durable solutions, moving the conversation beyond indefinite displacement towards voluntary return, reintegration and restored livelihoods where conditions permit. It also demonstrates the value of the LCBGF as a bridge between national governments, subnational authorities, security institutions and communities whose lives transcend international boundaries.

The composition of the mission itself reflected that integrated approach. Governor Buni was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the LCBC, Ambassador Ibrahim Babani; MNJTF Force Commander, Maj. Gen. ST Audu; Yobe State Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje; the Special Adviser on Security, Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd); Dr. Kole Shettima; Dr. Said Alkali Kori; Dr. Babagana Mohammed Adam, SOLID Project Coordinator Suleiman Dauda, and other senior officials.

The broader political message from Bol to Kaya is therefore clear: the Lake Chad Basin cannot be stabilized through military action alone. Security must be complemented by diplomacy; diplomacy by humanitarian responsibility; humanitarian interventions by livelihoods; and stabilization by economic integration.

Governor Buni also expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and his fellow Governors of the remaining seven territories for their collective steadfast leadership and commitment to peace, security and regional cooperation across the Lake Chad Basin.

This significant mission demonstrated what the LCBGF can become when regional diplomacy leaves conference halls and reaches the frontline: a platform capable of connecting political leadership with the everyday realities of border communities, displaced populations and host communities.

For the Chairman, the mission must now move decisively from engagement to ex*****on. Governor Buni has directed a comprehensive follow-through to translate the commitments and outcomes of the Bol and Kaya engagements into concrete, measurable and sustainable action.

From the diplomatic engagements in Bol to the voices of Nigerian refugees in Kaya, one strategic message emerged unmistakably: national borders may define our territories, but security, stability and prosperity across the Lake Chad Basin are indivisible, and their future demands collective leadership, shared responsibility and decisive action.

A Visit to My Father, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam

This evening, I had the pleasure of paying a visit to my father, His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, Minister of Police Affairs, at his Abuja residence.
