DG DRDB DECORATES NEWLY PROMOTED SENIOR OFFICERS.

The Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) earlier today, 9 April 2026, conducted the Shipping of stripes and Decoration of two newly promoted Senior Officers, Lieutenant Commander WD Ibrahim and Squadron Leader MM Nuhu who were elevated to the ranks of Commander in the Nigerian Navy and Wing Commander in the Nigerian Air Force respectively.

The Director General (DG), DRDB Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni, decorated Commander WD Ibrahim, assisted by Miss Aisha Ibrahim, the daughter of the senior officer. Similarly,
Wing Commander MM Nuhu was decorated by the Deputy Director General DRDB Maj Gen OM Bello, assisted by the Director of Logistics DRDB Air Vice Marshal MJ Chidama.

A representative of the Deputy Directors, Commodore OEA Izilein,
Deputy Director Laser & Optics Research urged the newly promoted senior officers to continue with their good works with gratitude to self and the Service. Similarly, the Director Logistics DRDB, Air Vice Marshal MJ Chidama charged the newly promoted Senior Officer to be great ambassadors of their Services and strive to live up to their new responsibilities.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director General Maj Gen OM Bello congratulated the newly promoted officers and advised them to continue embodying professionalism and hardwork in the discharge of their duties. He further highlighted that the new rank comes with higher responsibilities and expectations by the Services.

In his remarks , the DG DRDB, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni congratulated the Senior Officers, in his words, " I encouraged you both to stand firm to your respective duties and be good ambassadors of your Services. I commend your achievements so far, but also be reminded that promotion is not merely a reward but a call to deeper responsibilities, be ready at all time to discharge your duties effectively. I congratulate you both and wish you all the best in your new ranks".

Moving the vote of thanks on behalf of the newly promoted senior officers, Commander WD Ibrahim expressed their sincere gratitude to God , the Commander -in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff for finding them worthy of promotion. He further stated that the honour bestowed on them was highly appreciated and pledged to uphold the values and discipline of the Armed forces of Nigeria. He further, thanked the DG for his unwavering support while ssuring that the confidence bestowed on them will be held in high esteem.

The decoration ceremony took place in the DG’s Conference Hall at the Bureau Headquarters and was graced by the Director General, DRDB, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni, the deputy DG, very senior officers of the Bureau, researchers and family members of the newly decorated senior officers.

ARMY WAR COLLEGE NIGERIA PARTICIPANTS COURSE 10 VISITS DRDB, EXPLORES INDIGENOUS DEFENCE RESEARCH CAPABILITIES

Participants of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 10/2026 on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, visited the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) as part of a study tour conducted under the National Security and Organisation of Defence Module of the Course. The study tour was led by the Commandant, Major General UM Alkali and included the Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies, Directors, Members of Faculty and participants. The Participants comprised senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Navy, alongside 11 allied officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and South-Africa.

A comprehensive brief was presented on the Bureau delivered by the Assistant Director Sensor, Navy Captain KO Oyinloye. The presentation covered the Bureau’s research trajectory from inception to date, its achievements, challenges and future plans. Notably, participants were briefed on the extensive joint initiatives and coordinated research efforts conducted in close cooperation with the three services, underscoring the importance of a unified approach to defence innovation. The presentation also covered the Bureau’s commitment to drive the sustainable advancement of indigenous defence capabilities in Nigeria, ensuring the nation's self-reliance and technological sovereignty in the defence sector.

The Commandant, Major General UM Alkali, expressed his appreciation for the warm reception of the Bureau. He noted that part of the theme for AWCN Course 10 is indigenous defence development, which strongly aligns with one of DRDB’s core mandates of conducting indigenous research and development for national development. He further stated that the visit will enhance knowledge and enrich the research work of participants. The Director General, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni, applauded the Commandant of AWCN for promoting practical knowledge alongside theory. He also commended the intellectual depth of engagement during the interactive session and reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to attaining its long-term strategic goals in pursuit of national defence self-sufficiency.

The participants were conducted on a guided tour of the 3D Additive Manufacturing Laboratory and the DRDB Armoured Airboat stand. The visit proved a fitting complement to the academic objectives of the National Security and Organisation of Defence Module, reinforcing the importance of indigenous research and development to Nigeria’s national security architecture.

"Be Bearers of Good News and Help Curb Misinformation on Tax Reforms" – Deputy Director General Urges Defence Research and Development Bureau Staff

The Deputy Director General of the Defence Research and Development Bureau, Major General OM Bello, has urged staff to become ambassadors of accurate tax information, encouraging them to be bearers of good news and help curb misinformation about the tax reforms. He made this call on Friday, January 30th, following an enlightenment session conducted by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) on taxation and the impact of Nigeria's 2026 Tax Policy on employee earnings. The presentation, which held at the Bureau's headquarters, was delivered by a three-member team comprising Mr Olufemi Olarinde, Head of Fiscal Reform and Tax Implementation Division, Mrs Silifat Iyabode Ibrahim and Mr Bashir Sami.

The presentation is the first in the series of the Bureau's training programme for year 2026 and aimed to educate the Bureau's staff on taxation principles, provide clarity on the recently enacted tax reform act and address questions on various aspects of tax administration. The first presenter, Mr Bashir Sami spoke on understanding taxation, PAYE and salary deductions. He explained the objectives of taxation and provided an overview of taxable and personal income. It was highlighted that military personnel are exempted from tax obligations, while clarifying that civilian staff working in military units are not exempted, a point of particular relevance to the DRDB audience.

Mrs Silifat Iyabode Ibrahim followed with a session on employee responsibilities and practical financial awareness, emphasizing the importance of understanding tax reliefs and exemptions. She encouraged the audience to maintain accurate personal financial records and avoid misinformation and unofficial advice on tax matters. The team leader, Mr Olufemi Olarinde concluded the session by highlighting the significance of the new tax reforms, outlining exemptions introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration which he noted has an advantage over the old tax policy. Mr Olufemi further enlightened the audience on the tax exempted goods and explained zero-rate goods provisions. He demonstrated in a practical session how to use the Personal Income Tax Calculator portal to calculate the tax rates workers are liable to remit under the new tax act.

The presentation was followed by a robust interactive session where participants sought clarifications on various aspects of the new tax reforms. Key concerns raised included inquiries regarding the extent of government access to taxpayers' banking information, tax obligations on secondary income streams and auxiliary business ventures and the tangible benefits and public goods derived from tax remittances to the government. The NRS team provided comprehensive responses to all queries, offering detailed explanations on data privacy protocols, multiple income taxation frameworks, and the utilization of tax revenues for national development and public service delivery.

In his remarks, the Director General of the Bureau, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni, represented by Major General Bello, expressed appreciation to the NRS team for their comprehensive explanation of the tax act. He emphasized the importance of the enlightenment session and commended the NRS's willingness and camaraderie in honouring the Bureau's invitation on such short notice.

DRDB Spotlights Disruptive Technologies: Mastery of AI, Cyber, and Electronic Warfare Essential for Nigeria's Defence Future

The future of warfare lies in seamless digital connectivity across military platforms, where personnel, vehicles, machines, drones, and sensors exchange real-time data to strengthen situational awareness and accelerate decision-making on the battlefield. This was the central message during the seminar on "Emerging Technologies and Warfare: Enhancing Defence Research and Development for Future Warfare Capabilities" held today, January 29, 2026, at the Defence Research and Development Bureau multipurpose hall.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Air Vice Marshal Akeem A. Adebomehin, Director of Aerospace Research, described how artificial intelligence, cyber and electronic warfare are revolutionizing national conflict preparation and engagement in conflicts. He added that AI models are being increasingly integrated into military operations, enabling faster decision-making and improving surveillance for more effective targeting. AVM Adebimehin emphasized that AI-enabled drone swarms with autonomous peer-to-peer communication and coordination are redefining air dominance by overwhelming traditional defense systems.

The presentation highlighted the critical importance of training, capacity building and timely adaptation to current disruptive technologies. The speaker maintained that through disruptive technologies, including robotics and big data analytics, military institutions can accelerate intelligence gathering, mission planning, and combat responses. He further noted that as nations continue to invest in these technologies, the future of warfare will depend on mastery, accelerated reconstruction and adaptive capacity in the face of relentless technological evolution. He added that the integration of AI and cyber warfare capabilities will be crucial in determining success on the battlefield.

During the interactive session, it was emphasized that institutions should prioritize training, infrastructure development, and research partnerships to harness these innovations effectively. Participants were encouraged to leverage the platform to share insights and push the boundaries of what is possible with artificial intelligence. The seminar highlighted that emerging technologies are not just enhancing existing capabilities but creating entirely new operational paradigms and reshaping traditional military structures. The message was clear: technological readiness is no longer optional but essential for national security in the modern era, where success depends on operating in an increasingly technology-driven theatre of war.

The Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) hosted a high-level delegation from TRL Group, a leading innovator in aerospace and defence solutions. The visit took place on Thursday 22, January 2026, facilitated by Air Vice Marshal CA Ohwo (Rtd), CEO/MD of Air Operations Consult, with the primary objective of exploring strategic partnerships to address Nigeria’s unique and evolving security challenges through advanced military technologies.

The representative of TRL Group, Mr Janik Jakub delivered a detailed presentation on Space and Drones Solutions, spotlighting Advanced Integrated Border Surveillance and ISR capabilities designed to deliver intelligence dominance through speed, precision, and enhanced situational awareness. TRL Group showcased its cutting-edge military hardware and integrated solutions, including state-of-the-art drones, satellite communications, advanced real-time imagery, and comprehensive border monitoring systems. These technologies provide persistent surveillance, rapid data transmission, seamless integration of satellite imagery, and unmanned aerial systems. It also includes AI-enabled analytics and robust command software, enabling wide-area coverage, rapid threat detection, and real-time response across complex terrains and domains. The Group further offered scalable and cost-effective tools that enable early warning for informed decision-making, and proactive operations. This aligns directly with the operational realities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and supporting national efforts to counter asymmetric threats while enhancing ongoing military operations.

DRDB at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026 Regimental Dinner Night

On Wednesday 14 January 2026, the Director General of the Defence Research and Development Bureau, Rear Admiral Kehinde John Odubanjo mni, joined other distinguished senior officers and eminent personalities at the inaugural Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026 (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner.

The Regimental Dinner was hosted by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the prestigious Armed Forces Officers’ Mess. Abuja.

This landmark event celebrated the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of the gallant men and women of the Armed Forces of Nigeria both serving and retired, while paying heartfelt tribute to our fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd) graced the occasion as Special Guest of Honour, alongside Senators, House of Representatives members, Service Chiefs and top military leaders from the Services.

This enduring military tradition reaffirms the collective commitment of the members of the Armed Forces to defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria and ensuring the peace and security of the nation. The sacrifices and resilience of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in tackling the nation’s security challenges are noble act forged in sweat and blood, deserving of commemoration.

DG DRDB PAYS A WORKING VISIT TO TETFUND

The Director General Defence Research And Development Bureau Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni and principal staff officers of the bureau paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary TETFUND, Arc Sonny S.T. Echono FNIA on Wed 10 Dec 25 in Abuja. The courtesy visit was aimed at fostering collaboration and support for research and development in DRDB. The Director General stated the achievements recorded so far and solicited for more support towards the establishment of defence research and innovation hubs in select tertiary institutions accross the country. He sought for more support to enable research development of prototypes which will assist the country towards solving its problems and by extension contributing its quota to enhancing national security. In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND congratulated the Director General on his appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership. Arc. Echono emphasized the critical role that research and development plays in national growth and innovation. He assured the DG that TETFUND remains committed to ensuring that all necessary resources are effectively harnessed to strengthen research activities in the bureau. He further noted that every research initiative from prototype stage to fullscale production will receive the support required to achieve the desired impact. The DRDB visiting team had in its entourage the Director of Maritime Research, R Adm EE Ebe, the Director Land forces Research, Brig Gen NJ Edet and the director Logistics Air Cdre MJ Chidama.

The Defence Research and Development Bureau recently held a decoration/shipping of stripes ceremony in honour of 2 of the bureau’s recently promoted senior officers, Capt (NN) MT Abdullahi and Cdr KO Oyinloye, who were elevated to the ranks of Commodore and Captain (NN) respectively.
The ceremony took place at the DRDB Headquarters and was presided over by the Director General, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni. The event was witnessed by senior officers, staff, family members and well-wishers.
In his remarks, the Director of Logistics, Air Cdre MJ Chidama, congratulated the newly promoted officers on their deserved promotion and urged them to continue to be worthy ambassadors of the Nigerian Navy and the Bureau. In his closing remarks, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni congratulated both senior officers and expressed his confidence in their continued professionalism and high integrity. He reminded them that the new ranks translate to increased responsibility and urged them to continue to uphold the values of the Nigerian Navy. DRDB AND NASRDA COMMIT TO SUSTAINED COLLABORATION

The Director General, Defence Research and Development Bureau, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni, paid a working visit to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Matthew Adepoju, on Fri 5 Dec 25 at the Obasanjo Space Centre in Abuja.
In his remarks, the DG/CEO of NASRDA stressed the importance of integrating GPS systems into military hardware and boots, explaining that the innovation is poised to enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness in the field. He noted that such collaborations are essential in tackling national security challenges, stimulating economic growth and driving overall national development. Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni commended the NASRDA leadership for the prompt response to the courtesy call request and the warm reception accorded to us. He expressed his commitment to driving impactful capacity-building programmes with NASRDA to deepen staff knowledge, sharpen strategic skills and strengthen Nigeria’s defence research and innovation. DG DRDB PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO DSA

The Director General Defence Research and Development Bureau, Rear Admiral KJ Odubanjo mni and Principal Staff Officers of the bureau paid a Courtesy Visit to the Chief of Defence Space Administration (CDSA), Maj Gen PO Ilodibia on Fri 5 Dec 25 at the Defence Space Administration Headquarters in Abuja. The visit was poised at maintaining the already existing collaboration between both institutions. The CDSA commended the DG DRDB for his humility and sense of duty stating that he is the first to pay a visit to the Defence Space Administration since his assumption of duty as the CDSA. He further stressed that the DSA stands ready to optimize efforts on Research and Development initiated by both organisations. He sought for more collaboration in the area of development of prototypes relevant to Defence equipment beneficial to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The DG in his remarks stated that the DRDB has outlined plans for its human capacity building through learning exchange programs between the 2 organization utilizing the understudy programme, particularly in the area of cybersecurity and other related fields to deepen their understanding of the Administration’s capabilities and the potential contributions its experts can make to national security. He added that personnel previously deployed to the Defence Space Administration for training in drone technology were expected to resume fully and continue their hands-on learning and capacity development.

Reaffirming the Bureau’s commitment to R&D, the DG emphasized that DRDB is fully prepared to strengthen its partnership with the DSA, especially in strategic research and technology development initiatives. He also referenced the former Honourable Minister of Defence’s commendation of a staff of the bureau, Mr. Annas for his outstanding expertise in rocket development. An example, he noted as an indigenous talent that is capable of driving the country’s defence innovation agenda. The DG concluded by underscoring the importance of sustained cooperation between DRDB and DSA in advancing Nigeria’s defence research ecosystem and achieving greater technological self-reliance.

DRDB AND NDC STRENGTHEN STRATEGIC RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP

On Wednesday 26 November 2025, the Director General of the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB), Rear Admiral Kehinde John Odubanjo mni, led a DRDB delegation on a working visit to the the National Defence College (NDC). He was warmly received by the Commandant, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed. The visit was a key part of the Bureau’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional ties. It marked a step in ensuring the deepening of collaboration between the DRDB and NDC, with a shared focus on advancing national defence innovation and strategic development. During the meeting, Rear Admiral Odubanjo emphasized the DRDB’s intention to work closely with researchers at the NDC’s Centre for Research and Strategic Studies (CRSS). He noted that enhanced cooperation is essential to bolster research that supports national security and strategic programs. Rear Admiral Ahmed warmly welcomed the DRDB delegation and lauded the initiative. He assured the Director General of the College’s full readiness to provide support in all areas of collaboration, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to advancing crucial defence research. The Commandant also commended the DRDB for its proactive engagement and reiterated the College’s willingness to partner with the bureau on future research and strategic programs aimed at strengthening the nation’s defence capabilities.
