Earlier today, I attended the National Technical Workshop on the One Humanitarian–One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), convened by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the Honourable Minister of State, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, as well as representatives of UN agencies and international non-governmental organisations.

The OHOPRS represents a strategic and unified national framework for addressing poverty in Nigeria, aligning systems, actors, and interventions toward a common goal of sustainable poverty reduction.

In my remarks, I reaffirmed the commitment of the National Bureau of Statistics and the wider Nigerian Statistical System to support this initiative through the provision of credible, timely, and high-quality data, recognising that data remains the foundation and backbone of effective policy design and implementation.

I also commended the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction for this laudable initiative. A coordinated, data-driven approach that harmonises efforts across institutions is essential to achieving meaningful and lasting progress in the fight against poverty.

Today, our advocacy engagements for MICS 7 continued in Cross River State, where I paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency, the Executive Governor, represented by the Vice Chairman/CEO of the Cross River State Planning Commission, Dr. B**g Duke. He was joined by the Commissioners for Health, Women Affairs, Social Welfare and community development, DG of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Permanent Secretaries from other ministries and members of the academic community.

During the meeting, I emphasised the importance of Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) data in informing evidence-based planning and development. I also encouraged the state government to take ownership of the survey outcomes and actively utilise the data once released to support effective policy decisions.

A key highlight of my visit to Cross River State was also a stop at the NBS State Office and the South-South Zonal Office, where I interacted with staff and assessed their welfare and working conditions as part of our continued efforts to strengthen institutional capacity across our field offices.

The data collection for the 7th round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 7) continues across the country, and I had the opportunity to visit a community in Abuja where our enumerators are currently conducting interviews. I was joined by officials from UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Director of Statistics from the FCT Statistical Agency.

This visit follows my earlier engagements with field teams in Lagos and Kano. These supervisory and advocacy visits are an important part of our statistical advocacy efforts and our commitment to observing, firsthand, the quality assurance processes that underpin our data production.

Interacting directly with enumerators and respondents provides valuable insight into how our standards and protocols are being implemented on the ground. I am pleased with the professionalism, diligence, and adherence to methodology demonstrated by our field teams.

The results of this survey will provide critical evidence to support planning, policymaking, and programme design, particularly in areas affecting children, households, and vulnerable populations.

Let me assure Nigerians that the National Bureau of Statistics remains firmly committed to producing credible, reliable, and high-quality data. Every stage of the MICS7 process; from training and field supervision to validation and analysis, is guided by internationally recognised standards.

We thank our partners and the communities who continue to cooperate with our enumerators. Strong data systems are built on collaboration, transparency, and public trust and we remain dedicated to upholding these principles.

During the week in Kano, I had the privilege of visiting our dedicated enumerators conducting the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7) in the field and seeing firsthand the important work they are doing to strengthen Nigeria’s data ecosystem.

Before heading to the field, I paid separate courtesy visits to the Honourable Commissioner for Health and to the Chief of Staff to the Governor. Present at the visit to the Chief of Staff were the Honourable Commissioners for Education and Environment, alongside Permanent Secretaries and Directors from various Ministries. Their collective support is vital to securing respondents’ cooperation, improving data quality, and ensuring the continued success of our national statistical programmes.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was engaging directly with respondents and hearing their perspectives. These interactions reinforce our commitment to producing reliable statistics that truly reflect the lives of Nigerians.

I would like to recognise and appreciate the continued support of the Kano State Government to the Kano State Bureau of Statistics, the successful implementation of MICS7, and, by extension, the strengthening of the Nigeria Statistical System.

Today, I visited our hardworking enumerators currently conducting the 7th round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 7) in the field.

It was truly inspiring to witness their dedication and professionalism firsthand as they engage with communities and collect data that will help shape policies affecting children, women, and families across Nigeria.

At the National Bureau of Statistics, our commitment to producing credible, high-quality data remains unwavering. This commitment goes hand in hand with our responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing, safety, and motivation of our field staff, whose efforts form the backbone of our national statistical system.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the households and respondents who have opened their doors and given their time to support this important national exercise. Your cooperation is essential to the production of reliable and trustworthy statistics for Nigeria.

I also commend our enumerators for their resilience and service. Your work matters, and your contribution is vital to building a stronger, evidence-driven Nigeria.

We had a fantastic time last week, at the second bi-annual meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS), where stakeholders gathered to discuss critical issues affecting the national statistical system, under the theme “Harnessing the Power of Statistics for Nigeria’s Sustainable Development and Economic Transformation.”

The conversations centred on how we strengthen coordination across the system and position statistics as a true investment for national development. We also reflected on ongoing reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s statistical system, including the recently launched third National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDSIII), the Power of Data High Impact Initiative as well as efforts to ensure that our statistics better reflect current economic realities and support evidence-based decision-making.

The meeting was formally declared open by the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who was ably represented by the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyingi Brown.

As we move forward, the task before us is clear: to continue building a statistical system that is credible, inclusive, technology-driven, and responsive to the needs of policymakers and citizens alike. When data is strong, coordinated, and trusted, it becomes a powerful driver of sustainable development and economic transformation.

I had the privilege of delivering the keynote at the 2nd International Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) in Asaba, Delta State.

The theme — “Big Data and Analytics in Nigeria: Developing a National Data Ecosystem for Enhanced National Prosperity” — could not be more timely. In my remarks, I highlighted that data is now one of the most valuable assets of any nation. Harnessing it effectively requires a strong, integrated ecosystem that transcends institutional silos.

I stressed three key pillars for building this ecosystem:
🔹 Interoperability – ensuring our systems “talk” to each other through shared standards and platforms.
🔹 Partnerships – uniting MDAs, the private sector, academia, civil society and development partners in one collaborative network.
🔹 Trust – safeguarding data privacy and confidentiality in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

At NBS, we are already taking bold steps through initiatives such as the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics (ISAS), expanding GIS capabilities, and investing in the next generation of statisticians and data scientists in partnership with CISON and universities.

The benefits of such collaboration are transformative, from agriculture policies powered by satellite imagery and farmer registration data, to education reforms informed by integrated datasets across multiple agencies. These are not abstract possibilities; they are achievable outcomes if we work together.

I thank CISON for convening this important gathering and for its vital role in professionalising our field. By joining forces across sectors, we can build a national data ecosystem that turns raw data into actionable intelligence, strengthens governance, drives innovation and accelerates sustainable development for every Nigerian.

Earlier today, I had the privilege of leading the National Bureau of Statistics team on a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC Nigeria), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and his management team at the Commission’s headquarters.

Our discussions were both insightful and productive as we explored ways to deepen inter-agency collaboration, particularly through the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics (ISAS), which will enable seamless data exchange between our institutions.

I’m excited about the possibilities this partnership holds for enhancing data-driven decision-making and supporting national development initiatives. This is only the beginning of what promises to be a long and impactful collaboration between NBS and INEC.

Today, I had an insightful and productive meeting at the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF)

Our discussions centered on strengthening collaboration between NBS and OHCSF in key areas, including:
🔹 Collecting and warehousing data on the Federal Civil Service
🔹 Capacity building for statisticians within the civil service to enhance modern statistical practices
🔹 Advancing digitization of administrative processes and procedures to achieve seamless integrated system of administrative statistics in the country

This partnership marks another important step towards improving the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of public sector data for evidence-based decision-making.
