*EBONYI POLICE COMMAND REFUTES ALLEGATION OF ₦700,000 PAYMENT FOR RELEASE OF SUSPECTS*

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, is aware of a social media post by one Mr. Justice Ozobi, in which he alleged that the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Ebony [sic] State Command, ordered the collection of ₦700,000 each from six different families for the release of their sons, following their arrest allegedly ordered by a traditional ruler in Ebony [sic] State.

Ordinarily, the Command would have ignored the post, which is riddled with typographical errors, incoherent assertions, and a glaring lack of factual accuracy. The picture used in the post is that of the long-retired former Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, further demonstrating the author’s apparent lack of basic research and due diligence before publishing such a serious allegation.

However, in the interest of clarity and to prevent the public from being misled, the Command wishes to state categorically that the allegation is false, unfounded, and without basis.

The Command further wishes to clarify that it does not handle land disputes. Consequently, any attempt to link the Commissioner of Police or the Command to the alleged collection of money for a land-related matter or the release of persons allegedly arrested in connection with such a dispute is completely baseless.

The allegation is grave and malicious, calculated to malign, impugn the integrity and reputation of the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, and distract the Command from its ongoing efforts under her leadership to protect lives and property, prevent crime, and maintain peace and security across the State.

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, remains committed to professionalism, discipline, accountability and transparency, and will not condone any act capable of bringing the Force into disrepute. Any allegation of misconduct against a police officer will be given due consideration and investigated on its merits where credible evidence is provided.

Accordingly, the Command challenges Mr. Justice Ozobi to produce the evidence which he based his allegation, as he claimed in his post. Rather than publish unsubstantiated and defamatory allegations apparently aimed at generating traffic and engagement on his social media platform, Mr. Ozobi should have put out the alleged evidence.

The Command therefore calls on members of the public to exercise restraint and responsibility in the dissemination of information on social media. While the Command respects the right of citizens to air their views and raise genuine concerns, the deliberate publication and circulation of false, malicious or defamatory information will not be tolerated.

Ebonyi State Command remains resolute in its commitment to accountability, transparency and professional policing, and will continue to take appropriate legal action against individuals who deliberately circulate false or defamatory information capable of misleading the public, in accordance with the law.

*NO NEW TERROR GROUP, MASS KIDNAPPING IN IZZI LGA - EBONYI COMMAND WARNS AGAINST SENSATIONAL JOURNALISM*

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, says there is no new terror group or mass kidnapping in Izzi Local government area of the state.The Command wishes to also warn against sensational reporting and gorilla journalism.

The Command is surprised at a social media post by one Chika Nwoba, in which he alleged the emergence of a new terror group in the State claiming that scores of persons were kidnapped, with about 100 victims currently being held in captivity.

The Command condemns this yellow journalism and wonders why Mr. Nwoba should base his story on a telephone conversation with a family member of one of the alleged victims.

The Command hereby condemns this falsehood which is baseless, misleading, and capable of unnecessarily creating fear and panic among residents of the State.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Command wishes to clarify the incident referred to in the said conversation.

On 28 July 2026, one Okemini Ogbonna reported to the Command that his three brothers had left home on 27 July 2026 to watch a football match but did not return home. He subsequently received a message purportedly from a group calling itself “Bloody Vampires”, claiming that his brothers were in their custody and threatening to kill them if the State Government failed to pay the sum of five million United States dollars within 62 hours.

Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Command immediately commenced investigation and mobilised efforts to trace the source and activities associated with the telephone number used in making the threat. The investigation led to a location around the Ogun State Correctional Centre.

In the course of the investigation, the command's operatives encountered a victim who had also been targeted by members of the same syndicate using a similar modus operandi to extort money from him. Upon realising that he was dealing with scammers, the victim threatened to report the matter to the Police. Subsequently, an acquaintance of the victim, who had been used by the syndicate in furtherance of their scheme, emerged from a neighbouring village where he had been hiding.

The Command had notwithstanding this development, continued its investigation into the matter, and remains committed to getting to the root of the incident, identifying all those involved and bringing them to justice.

The Command, however, considers it necessary to state that the claim that over 100 Ebonyi indigenes are being held captive, or that scores of persons have been kidnapped in Izzi Local Government Area, without any corresponding reports, incidents or widespread security concerns within the State, is a gross exaggeration and an allegation taken too far.

The Command therefore urges Mr. Chika Nwoba to provide credible evidence to substantiate his claims or desist forthwith from spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary fear and apprehension among members of the public.

The Ebonyi State Command remains committed to maintaining the peace and security of the state. Under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, psc, mnips, the Command will continue to work tirelessly, in collaboration with sister security agencies and relevant stakeholders, to protect lives and property and ensure that Ebonyi State remains safe and peaceful.

Members of the public are further urged to rely on verified information from the Police and other credible authorities and to promptly report suspicious activities or genuine security concerns to the command.

*EBONYI STATE COMMAND RECEIVES AIG ZONE 9 ON FAMILIARISATION VISIT*

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, hosted the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, PhD, LLB, psc(+), during his familiarisation and working visit to the Command. The AIG was received by the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, psc, mnips, alongside senior officers of the Command.

Upon his arrival, the AIG engaged with traditional rulers in Ebonyi State, emphasising the importance of a strong and sustained partnership between the Nigeria Police Force and the traditional institution in maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and promoting security across the State.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to serving the people with professionalism, empathy and respect for their fundamental rights. He further stated that, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, psc(+), NPM, the Force remains committed to people-oriented policing and building stronger partnerships with communities and other critical stakeholders.

In her welcome address, the Commissioner of Police highlighted some of the achievements recorded by the Command, while expressing appreciation to the AIG for the visit. She noted that the visit would have a positive impact on the officers.

Addressing officers of the Command, AIG Nwonyi stressed the importance of discipline, professionalism and leadership within the Force. He charged senior officers to lead by example, mentor younger officers and prioritise the welfare and well-being of personnel under their supervision.

Furthermore, he urged officers to take their responsibilities seriously, discharge their duties with diligence and professionalism, and conduct themselves in a manner that projects the Nigeria Police Force in a positive light. He emphasised that every police officer has a responsibility to uphold the reputation and integrity of the Force through their conduct and interactions with members of the public.

EBONYI COMMAND COMMENCES INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATH OF AMOS ONWE UBOCHI

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of one Amos Onwe Ubochi, who left his residence on 17 August 2026 but did not return.

On 18 August 2026, the Command received information that the lifeless body of Amos Onwe Ubochi was discovered along a bush path within the community. Upon receiving the report, Police operatives visited the scene, and evacuated the body to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead.

The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death and identify those responsible.

The Command assures members of the public that every necessary step will be taken to get to the root of the incident, while urging anyone with useful information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, has deployed a contingent of police officers from the Command to participate in the forthcoming Osun State gubernatorial election.

The officers departed the State following a briefing by the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, psc, mnips, who charged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, impartiality, and integrity throughout the election period.

She warned the officers against any conduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute, reminding them that their deployment presents an opportunity to demonstrate the professionalism and commitment of the Force to democratic policing and the rule of law.

CP Okafor further urged them to remain vigilant, while ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens who come out to vote. She emphasised that the officers must remain strictly neutral and must not interfere with the electoral process or show preference for any candidate or political party.

*RE: PDP CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED ATTACK*

The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, has taken note of an interview granted by a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Hon. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Nwobo, on Arise News Channel, during which he made several allegations against the Command, including claims that petitions had been submitted to the Command concerning alleged attacks on members of the party in the State.

The Command wishes to refute the allegations made in the interview and set the record straight.

During the interview, Hon. Nwobo cited three separate incidents in which members of his party were allegedly attacked and claimed that petitions had been submitted to the Police Command regarding the incidents. The Command wishes to state unequivocally that no petition relating to any of the alleged attacks has been received by the Ebonyi State Police Command.

The Command is, therefore, unable to ascertain the basis for the assertion that such petitions were submitted, as no such petition is currently before the Command.

Hon. Nwobo also alleged that Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie informed him that there was a “superior order” directing the withdrawal of police personnel who had been invited, and further claimed that police officers were present when Barr. Nworie was allegedly attacked.

The Command does not know the circumstances or the person with whom the alleged conversation concerning a “superior order” was purportedly held. However, the Command wishes to state categorically that the assertion that the Police withdrew personnel because of an order is manifestly false and without factual basis.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Police were nowhere near any of the incidents referred to during the interview. In particular, no police officer was present at the residence or compound of Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie at the time of the alleged attack. Numerous clips circulating on the internet corroborate our stand.

The Command further wishes to clarify the circumstances surrounding Barr. Nworie's request for police security. On 31st July 2026, at approximately 3:03pm, the Command received a letter signed by Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie and titled “Threat to Life and Application for Adequate Security Coverage.” In the letter, he stated that he was scheduled to be officially received at Onuoriegu, Ikwuator Idembia Ward, Ezza South Local Government Area, on 1st August 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

However, Barr. Nworie did not contact the Command to discuss or clarify the request, nor did he provide the Command with any additional information regarding the specific venue or other necessary details that would have facilitated adequate security arrangements for the event. The Command also made attempts to contact him but he did not answer his calls or return them.

The Command finds it necessary to clarify these facts in order to prevent any misleading impression that the Police deliberately failed to provide security coverage.

The Command eagerly awaits the formal submission of petitions concerning the alleged attacks. Each allegation will be subjected to a thorough, impartial and discreet investigation, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law based on the outcome of the investigations.

The Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, psc, mnips, remains committed to impartiality and professionalism in the discharge of our constitutional responsibilities.

On this note, persons seeking or wishing to convene meetings or gatherings which will attract a large crowd should be guided by the provisions of the Public Order Act, which requires seeking and obtaining the requisite permission and possible consequential security coverage for such meetings/ gatherings.

The Command also wishes to caution individuals and groups against making statements capable of unnecessarily heightening tension or undermining the existing peace in the State. While the Command respects the right of individuals to express their views, it will not tolerate acts capable of disrupting public peace, inciting violence or threatening the safety of residents.

The Ebonyi State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that any act of violence, irrespective of the perpetrator or victim's political affiliation, is dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law.
