Five members of IWC Butterworth comprising President Dr Lalitha Ramasamy, Secretary Molly Anne Morris, Treasurer Ganga Devi Ganesh, Committee Member Sellam Murugiah and District 330’s Secretary Lucy Barrock accompanied by three teenaged children took a short ‘breakation’ to Ipoh over 2 days and a night from 30th to 31st May.
They packed themselves into two cars and enjoyed themselves thoroughly from the get go, stopping briefly for breakfast at a popular R&R on the Highway followed by a visit to the Japanese Garden which offered several photo opportunities. They had lunch at a Banana leaf restaurant before checking in to their holiday apartment.
In the evening they enjoyed North Indian cuisine followed by a cake cutting to celebrate Mothers’ Day. There was much laughter as the children played games and watched TV. The merriment continued into the wee hours as Molly’s talent for singing shone through as she belted out songs in various languages to her awestruck roommates. Then Sellam regaled with stories of her youth and encounters with the supernatural.
The next day they had brunch and headed to the Royal town of Kuala Kangsar where they posed at Malaysia’s oldest Rubber tree and at the zero milestone marker outside the post office to nurture a new hobby inspired by Ganga who is an avid hunter of zero milestone markers. There are plans to organise more such outings to foster close ties amongst members.

The Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of Butterworth proudly contributed RM1,470 (UGX 1,365,254.00 / US$373.00) towards supporting the Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of Bukomansimbi District 900, Uganda in one of the club’s pioneer projects, the bookmaking program which was held on 16th May 2026. Through this meaningful contribution, 23 young girls were able to remain in school, ensuring that their education journey continues despite financial and social challenges.

The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are underprivileged young girls in Bukomansimbi District 900, Uganda. The program not only provides them with practical bookmaking skills but also nurtures their confidence, self-reliance, and future income-generating opportunities. By equipping the girls with hands-on vocational skills, the initiative empowers them to become more independent and resilient within their communities.

This contribution by IWC of Butterworth strongly reflects its commitment towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 5: Gender Equality. By helping girls stay in school and supporting educational opportunities, the club promotes inclusive and equitable quality education for young women who may otherwise be left behind. At the same time, empowering girls through skills development and education contributes directly to advancing gender equality, enabling them to build brighter futures, gain economic independence, and break cycles of poverty and inequality.

IWC of Butterworth remains committed to supporting impactful community initiatives that uplift women and girls, create educational opportunities, and foster sustainable empowerment across borders.
