So a day before yesterday APM took a 6-hour road trip from Blantyre to Lilongwe. To some people, this was more than just a journey, it was a statement that he is healthy and strong enough to travel such a long distance by road. Others, however, believe it reflects the current economic challenges, and therefore, the government could not afford a private jet for the president.
That being said, I would like to give a credit to APM for taking that trip and, most importantly, for experiencing and acknowledging the true condition of the M1 Road.
To be honest, the M1 is the lifeline of Malawi’s economy. It connects our major cities, businesses, farmers, and ordinary citizens. President Chakwera spent five years travelling on the same road, yet many Malawians feel the worsening condition of the road was ignored.
APM has only been in power for a few months, but he deserves credit for matching words with action. Malawians are tired of promises; they want results.
Now the ball is in the court of the responsible Minister. We look forward to seeing real action, because fixing the M1 Road is not politics ; it is a national necessity.
